Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart | Official Trailer | Netflix

Video Overview & Insights

In the early hours of June 5, 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, igniting one of the most intense and widely covered missing-person cases in American history. Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart is a gripping documentary feature that takes viewers inside the real story—told in Elizabeth’s own words and through exclusive interviews with her family, investigators, and those closest to the case. Blending archival footage and never-before-seen material, the film traces the harrowing nine months of Elizabeth’s captivity at the hands of Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee. It explores the psychological and emotional toll on Elizabeth and her family, the relentless media attention, and the community’s tireless search for answers. The documentary not only revisits the events that shocked a nation but also spotlights Elizabeth’s journey of healing and her ongoing mission to inspire and protect others.

For people saying why did she not run away or alert someone when she had the chance. Perhaps its bizarre. But she was abused multiple times and also may have bonded with her captures. She was very young when taken and extremely sheltered.

My guess is that she was scared. Also she had spent time being tied up, so could not run.

They abused her and broke her down psychologically so that she probably didn't have the physical or mental strength to do much

There is no logical explanation of their 9 year old daughter randomly just knowing that the kidnapper was Emanuel…… anyone want to give a how did she come up with that name out side of it being spiritual.

You know I murderer or kidnapper gets away with a child every time or an adult or gets away with whatever and they never can find them and never can do them cuz you have there's a stupid rule 4872 hour no if your person is missing within the hours start looking for him don't depend on the police I can honestly say this The community and this world would help you more than the police would and tell me that ain't kindness

I’m not excusing any of Richard’s crimes but the prosecutors literally killed that man from just the stress of all of the interrogations while knowing they hardly had any evidence against him.

Those asking why she didn't run sooner. Ask every masked muslim female that. Because they feared for their lives.And have always been indoctrinated form a early age if they do they will suffer the wrath of god. But we all know who their god is. Unfortunantely out of fear they do not.

I watched the whole documentary just now. And I feel so disappointed on the police and system that they didn't really properly searched the area where the kidnapper kept her in the camp. They should have searched whole lake city thoroughly.

How in the hell did the wife only got 15 years?!! She should have gotten life in prison without parole. She can easily find another husband “prophet”, and do this again to another innocent child!

Just watch Elizabeth Smart tell her story. This is what I have wanted to say to her. Dear Elizabeth, I just want to say that I'm so sorry that I didn't recognize you when I saw you being hidden in plain sight. I saw the three of you walking on West Temple. My family just walked out of the conference center and my daughter and son were walking about 5 feet ahead of my husband and me. I spotted the 3 of you walking toward us. I mostly spotted the man, that now I know as Brian David Mitchell because I saw him checking out all the young women. As my daughter walked passed him, he paused looked back at her and was checking her out. I was furious! I went up into his face and said, YEAH! KEEP WALKING jerk!(but I didn't say jerk) He spun around and that's when I saw the knife under his clothes. I gathered up my kids like a mother hen and we ducted into the church library. When we came out, I saw him sitting there. We went out other doors. I felt like he followed us there. We were going to tell a police officer, couldn't see one, so we just left. I'm so sorry that I didn't see the whole situation. I wish that I would of saved you that day. All my intuition told me to protect my daughter from that monster. I'm so glad that you survived that monster. And, that you thrive to be a survivor. Thanks for sharing your story.

A naive religious community. Much too sheltered for the realities of everyday living.

This is another case of religious psychosis and god telling a straight yt man to molest children. Typical

Her sister witnessed her being taken and told the cops they had the wrong guy. They didn’t believe her, kept interviewing and interrogating him so much that he ended dying in a cell. And when her sister remembered who it was had taken her and told the Police they wouldn’t belief her??? 🤦‍♂️

Only one question. Why on earth Netfix interview Cory the detective? And he got promoted???

Is this a serious documentary or the typical netflix slop? I'm afraid of wasting time

It's terrible that she was abducted, raped, and held captive. I don't understand how you could keep your mouth shut in front of other people, a police detective, and multiple police cars. Don't you want to escape? What TF is wrong with you? I don't get it. It's so ironic her last name is Smart.

This documentary made me realize how USELESS cops are! I can’t believe how many times she could’ve been rescued but wasn’t due to their incompetence.

@carom3597

She has so many opportunities to escape, the scene in the library, in the club , just take of this “mask” and scream ..but she was just a kid, a scared kid.

@lanalara8237

Absolutely NO need for the graphic descriptive CSA content. Normal viewers do not need these vulgar details. It's also hugely triggering for survivors. SMH

@Themis33
@

Watching it now….Great documentary….but why didnt she yell out that she’s Elizabeth Smart in the library to the detective? At that point, she was in the safety of the detective…This could have been solved a long time ago and luckily she wasnt killed after that.

This story is bizarre. It feels less like a crime and more like a scripted movie.

The holes are everywhere. The "reality" they're selling is unacceptable.

And the mass media boom from Day One? That wasn't reporting. That was a launch.

They even let the detective slip up in the documentary: "We have a Hollywood story."

That's exactly what it is.
And that's exactly what they've been stuffing down our throats.
