In Australia, the current topic of conversation is around our government using high powered rifles to shoot brumbies in our snowy mountains, a national park area. For those who donât know, brumbies are feral animals in Australia but there is a strong sentiment of brumbies being majestic creatures, a strong part of our culture. Now Iâm all for shooting brumbies. In saying that, if this is our biggest gun problem, in happy with that!

You in the US treat the 2nd amendment like the gospel of god when you all (hopefully) know that it was written because you won your independence with guns and you couldn't afford and army and you were worried that the brits would pay their way into your congress and pass laws outlawing the guns that won you your independence. Hello there from Germany! I´ve been to the US numerous times in my younger years, visiting friends of mine there - going to the shooting range for at least a day every time I was there, was part of my routine. All my american friends owned plenty of guns, so I really really had a great time everytime. Shootig guns is great fun. But still, I am quite happy, that I can´t do the same stuff over here, because as I see it, the fun part comes with a HUGE downside, if you don´t have real strict regulations on gun ownership.

As a non-american, your 2nd amendment confuses me given its entire historical context for why it was written and its purpose at the time. Especially when you factor in the later rulings centuries after it was written by the US supreme court where they will adopt what something meant historically in one context then ignore it in another. What happened to the idea of having a reasoned and measure debate over these things instead of it turning into the type of BS talking points Jim made jokes about but that happen every single time the existence of the 2nd amendment as it stands now comes to bite you in the ass at the expense of the lives of other people that aren't them?

The Australian government very cleverly banned legal and licensed guns, but hundreds of thousands of illegal guns are freely owned and used by the criminals. They did it to give the criminals an upper hand to control their territories.

In terms of the attitude some people in the US have about guns, you will struggle to find anyone in any other developed country where guns are illegal that agrees that guns should be legal. Unfortunately everyone's opinion is largely shaped by the environment they grown up in and live in and once an opinion is formed, people will do all sorts of mental gymnastics to defend that opinion.
I respect the fact that you want to own guns if you live in the wild, or maybe work at a Rodeo or on your own land looking after your livestock from bears or wolves etc...
But I think maybe it's inner city/suburbs gun ban may work.
But us in England are very different to the U.S. but that's they only way I see it happening.
