It Doesn't Make Sense To Delay PS6, Here's Why

Video Overview & Insights

Ever since the PS5 price increases there's been more uncertainty on what next-gen is going to cost, and if it should even come out Holiday 2027. All signs are pointing to PS6 showing up around that time, but there's been more sentiment amongst analyst's that Sony might delay it to 2028 or even 2029. The thing is, that might not be the right play. Between the bill of material cost, trying to building an install base, and gambling on memory prices, the company SHOULD still launch PlayStation 6 on time. That's at least the arguments I'll be making today. It will be a really interesting looking back on these videos and seeing how wrong I am. But ya know, that's the fun. Who knows what will happen? Because I sure don't! :D

This was recorded prior to the Steam Machine’s confirmed pricing but I don’t think much changes here. It seems Valve has no interest in subsidizing the Steam Machine, and they’re surely not ordering the kind of volume a Sony/Nintendo would for better prices on those key components. If anything, the consoles have a an opportunity to re-solidify their dominance in the living room! But still curious to hear where people fall on that.

I get the feeling that PS6 is going to bomb from a sales perspective. Folks haven’t gotten enough out of the PS5 yet. And folks expect to get a 2030 console in 2030, not a 2027 console.

I believe that you are looking at a 999.99 machine. I hope I’m wrong but if you’re building a more powerful machine than PS5 Pro I can’t see them subsidizing new hardware given that they are the leader in high end console market.

When PS6 releases depends on one word: Exclusives. Sony cannot release a thousand dollar console that has an extremely desirable exclusive unplayable on PS5, without pissing off their fanbase and ruining their goodwill/reputation similar to what Xbox has done. Keep delaying till prices are tolerable, giving those launch titles more time to cook in the process. Nintendo already did that with the Switch 2, intentionally delaying hardware for software development. They either have to delay or force all titles to be crossgen.

I almost expect them to shock all by releasing 3 consoles at a time. PS6 will be $499 and on paper not be more powerful than PS5 Pro but actually be the handheld SOC and a lot less ram, thinking 24gb thus giving a better entry. The handheld will be $599, and the PS6 Pro will launch same time for $799 physical. Take advantage of all the enthusiasts and people that have money and this was going to be the base console. It has 32gb ram.

Ps6 launching in a ram crisis means when the crisis eventually slows down, the price of the PS6 will still be higher than it should be. Companies are hoping they can capitalize on the pricing of the ram crisis

I want to see the PS6 released in 2028 just because I don't like the idea of an even-numbered PlayStation being released in an odd-numbered year. Also, 28 makes sense because the difference between the two those two digits is 6.

I’m normally a sucker for being an early adopter for a lot of new consumer electronics, especially PlayStation hardware. But honestly my ps5 pro already feels fine? Idk, I sometimes wonder how much of my experience would differ if I didn’t get a Pro. Also, this generation is so interesting where there’s only been like 4-5 ps5 only first party single player games. Also, I don’t really see where the big upgrade is going to be in a next generation other than AI/ML which my ps5 pro will likely support another full iteration or two of PSSR even if it’s watered down from a PS6. But I just don’t think there is a big important shift in hardware anymore.
PS3 to ps4 was arguably just the switch to x86 architecture and ps4 to ps5 was high speed SSDs. Also every game launches with like 6 graphics modes so I am really curious to see what the marketing of why I should upgrade is even going to be?
Even the dual sense, most games don’t use all of its features that well and the controller is more than fine, really all they would need to do is put a bigger battery in it.
Built in PS Link would be great for lossless audio without the need for a dongle, but that’s such a specific feature. Idk am I missing the big selling point for why we even need whatever this ps6 is designed to be?

Yeah I'm definitely not rushing out to buy a $700+ console. If the prices come down and if sony gets their head out of their ass and starts making good exclusives again then I'll get one. Otherwise I'll probably just wait for the ps7 to come out and buy a cheap refurbished ps6 to catch up on the games i missed out on.

The K-shaped economy is key. The people at the top of the K might be making $1000 a day, which a high price isn't much of a sacrifice. The average person is just on the bottom, where a week might be only $1000. You know what they say, you can't have billionaires and a middle class... we got a trillionaire.
If rumors are true, the PS6 will be in the top 10% of power, and the XSX might be in the top 5% though. Crazy how PC will be the underpowered one soon.

Yeah they probably won’t delay the console because of the many agreements behind the scene, but my question is, why is a ps6 needed?

Let’s look at it from this perspective, will the ps6 reduce development time? No. Will it help with diminishing returns or prices? No. So then what is the true purpose of it to get the same games at 120 fps? I just don’t see a definitive reason to go out into the store and buy it.

I was watching an Xbox podcast last night and I had the same thought I had about the next Xbox as I do with the Ps6. I am very curious about how well those things will sell in the long run. I’m not getting one on Day 1 but obvious there will be a market for it no matter what the price will be, just like core Valve people will snag the Steam Machine right away. For all these consoles, there will be an initial wave of support but I’m very skeptical about how much they’ll sell when we get to like Spring 2028 into the Summer. Like how many exclusive games will be out for the consoles by then? Will the difference be that much of a difference to regular people and even the core PlayStation consumer? I’m just worried the next Xbox and ps6 will both underperform in sales and then it’ll be like what happens next? More layoffs and potentially another price raise to the subscription service. But we’ll see! 🤷‍♂️

I feel like ps6 coming next year is pretty cool honestly I think it a testament to how well the ps5 is designed that it doesn’t feel old to many people and I think it would be supported like ps4 was and kinda is still in the ps6 generation I’m not on the bandwagon on wanting it to be delayed cause I think ps6 games would push the p5 to the limit kinda like how some p5 games push ps4

Gamers that have ALWAYS wanted to PC Game(like me...since the 90s and my friend had one), might start saving and get a Steam Deck instead. I was able to get Series X at launch but not PS5(F scalpers..my thoughts, too), October 2021, 11 Months later, is when I got a PS5. In 2028 or 2029 11 Month wait I can save up for a Steam Deck and buy that instead. Been gaming since Christmas 1987(or whatever Year NES was first purchasable in North America), owned EVERY console except Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, and, N64. Bought ALL consoles myself since PS2. I AM a console gamer, 11 Month wait was a LONG time! I wanted a PS5 so bad that I would buy games on PSN for it so when I did get one...just Log In and Download, remember that Summer Sale PSN had in 2021 with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and alot more PS5 games on sale? I bought 4-5 games other than Rift Apart. I AM a console/PlayStation gamer(sleepovers with friends, then Christmas 1997). I would probably save for the Steam Deck, but if 2028/29 are PS6 release date estimates and, isn't Microsoft releasing ''Helix'' within 1-2 years???

I'll buy a PS6 for $700 or even $800 that I don't like to say, but the thing is once you have the console you have it. It all depends on what you get from it. I can't say that I wouldn't buy it once it becomes available and damn 2030 would be way too long to introduce it and hopefully it does come out at the end of next year or 28.

The way things are going and after the Steam Machine's pricing it feels more and more likely that the PS6 if released next year will be too expensive. Less people will buy one than the install base of the PS5 Pro. Why would Sony want to release hardware that will flop because it's too expensive? Wait and see if GPU and Memory prices go down or re-design the next console to be more cost-effective.

Maybe it doesn't matter since cross-gen will continue for so long they'll still sell the software even with poor PS6 sales? It's hard enough getting people to buy PS5s at the increased price though. I also think the visual improvements we're seeing with games aren't going to be enough to sell most people on new hardware the same way PS5 Pro was dismissed.
Maybe they'll become like phones and you wait longer to upgrade. Just skip a generation since there's not as much difference. A lot of people feel like the PS5 is capable enough and should stick around longer.

After the PS6, and even after Switch 2 I just bought before price increase without games. I'm not buying anymore next gen consoles. We're just going wait till the AI industry bursts.

I had a PS5 from March 2021, and differently if I waiting 1 month longer before purchasing the PS6, and hopefully the final console I bought before AI screwed them over.

the first party output to justify a purchase of a $1000+ console is an easy pass. they need to wait until prices come down or figure something else out, bc i see no reason to upgrade from a ps5pro. just glad i have pc as a primary bc this gen has been boring on the console and the future looks bleak af, no kratos, just a laundry game, and cant even call the xmen, the xmen in a wolverine game with a middle aged jean gray. sales havent looked too good since the most recent hikes, id rather not see the ps6 off to the grave right off the bat.

— @ZuluNinja

When PS5 came out PS4 Pro was $400, and PS5 was $500. If there are still PS5 Pros on the shelf at $900 and PS6 comes out for less, why would anyone ever buy a more expensive PS5 Pro? Sony would want PS5 Pros to sell through, so would retailers with stock on hand. I never noticed any sale prices for old PS4 models whether norm or Pro while PS5 was out. A lot of that was probably due to COVID shortages of PS5, and if people couldn’t get that, they would buy a PS4 or PS4 Pro. Hopefully that wouldn’t happen again when PS6 comes out, but unless they finally lower the price of PS5 Pro, why would they ever sell the PS6 for less than it? If PS6 has better, more expensive hardware in it than PS5 Pro, how do they sell it for less than a PS5 Pro? People keep talking about consoles selling at a loss and manufacturers subsidizing consoles, that hasn’t really been a thing since Nintendo showed you could make money selling the console with the Wii. They don’t want to subsidize jack anymore. If they did, they wouldn’t raise console prices right now as much as they are. They haven’t been selling at a loss for about 2 decades, they aren’t going to start now or the next gen. Shareholders wouldn’t stand for it, that is why Nintendo was forced to raise Switch 2 prices, shareholder demands.
