Israel strikes Beirut's southern suburbs as Iran and US close in on deal

Israel has carried out a strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs, the densely populated area known as Dahiyeh. The Israeli military called it a precision strike. The attack is significant because Iran had previously drawn a red line over strikes on the Lebanese capital, warning that any such attack would be met with a response. A week ago, an Israeli strike on Dahiyeh triggered Iranian missile fire and a new round of US Iranian confrontations.

The strike comes as the US and Iran are reportedly close to signing a memorandum of understanding. Residents of Dahiyeh had expressed fear that moments of negotiation often become moments of jeopardy in Lebanon. There was no warning before the strike, and two apartment buildings appear to have been hit. Dahiyeh is a residential area with a large Shia population, home to many Lebanese, Syrians and migrant workers. Life had only just begun to return to the area in recent weeks.
From Israel’s perspective, the strike is seen as an attempt to show defiance amid pressure to link the Lebanon and Iran fronts in a single deal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, facing domestic political pressures and an election year, has been trying to derail talks and sabotage any potential memorandum. Israeli ministers, including Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, have pushed for strikes on Dahiyeh in response to drone infiltrations from Lebanon. Meanwhile, residents of northern Israel have been forced into shelters 16 times over the weekend due to rockets and drones.
These degenerate monstrous criminals should not be given another nickel or weapons from the US.
The strike now raises the question of whether Iran will respond, potentially derailing the entire regional arrangement. For many Lebanese, the country is once again a playground for a regional conflict being fought on their territory.
