Is Trump’s new National Security Strategy a ‘wholesale break' with US foreign policy’? | DW News

Video Overview & Insights

The US's long-awaited National Security Strategy has revealed the Trump White House's vision of America's future in the world. This includes a focus on Latin American relations and immigration - and it questions its future relationship with Europe.

00:00 US security strategy takes aim at European allies

00:48 Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook. She's an expert on US policy and is a senior advisor with the Bertelsmann Foundation.

Isn´t Bertelsmann is very much pro US/Trump Foundation? Who is financially supporting Bertelsmann Foundation? But of course is it a divorce plan. he will benefit from all the splittings he is trying to perform.Splitting Syriah, Ukraine, splitting Europe and so on.... it always was a destabilizing plan. but why do people only recognize it now????

Musk and his other big donors want to defang the EU so that Europe doesn’t have the power to regulate them.

The AfD is a far-right party. This party is so far to the right that even the French and Italian right-wing parties refuse to associate with it. The fact that the Republicans in the US now have such close ties with the AfD only proves where the Republicans stand. It's not Europe that has changed, but America. Europe will continue to defend democracy and freedom of speech and fight these far-right movements.

Late-stage persecution complex: National security rises to paramount importance for a country that feels fundamentally insecure, weak, vulnerable, and targeted by external actors who seek to exploit, spy on, and steal from it, thereby framing the entire international landscape as hostile.

5:05 "They underscore that there is very little freedom of speech in Europe". I think it's pretty clear that this is a direct reference to Great Britain, which had something like 12000+ arrests for offensive online comments last year, and multiple cases of people receiving harsh punishments for political dissent (yes, a lot of what the courts deemed 'racist' is just political dissent). The arrest rates are much worse than even in Belarus, so it is honestly a real problem that the state in GB is using the police as a means of supressing opinions.
Here in Swede there has been a clear slide towards harsher and harsher restrictions on free speech in that you are not allowed to state that you find for example cross-dressing or Islam immoral.
Like, if someone thinks that, they should be allowed to say as much. And to be perfectly clear, saying that something that defines a group is also something immoral is painting that whole group with a negative brush, turning opinion against them.
Others can disagree or argue against if they feel like it.
Sending people to prison because they have opinions someone might be offended by really is a gross restriction on freedom of speech, because that it the only kind of speech that needs protecting.
No one has ever needed protection because they said something everyone was perfectly fine with.

Europe should develop their own tech platforms. I as an asian will happily move on to it instead of US big tech platforms. US don't realize they got rich because of the allies letting them grow in their economy

Trump turned USA into isolated autocratic over nationalistic country👎
Like Rome USA is destroying itself from within & Trump is its Nero emperor!🔥🔥🔥
World’s ‘hottest’ country!👎

I’m worried that Trump’s kowtowing to Putin will back us into a hot war with either of our nuclear armed enemies. There’s a reason we’ve had the same bipartisan military policy against Russia and China since WW2.

Why should the US protect Europe? They have a lot of people to send to war with Russia. Besides, Europe has fought with Russia many times! Why not try again?! The US will watch and suck in European money. Good business strategy!

Fortunately, he’s right. Europe have spent fours years talking and talking, and not much has been done, best pictured by the French who has always had a big mouth, but nothing more. We have weak politicians in Europe in general, and a weak population who only cares about ourselves. Had we faced that little criminal gremlin in the Kremlin with firmness, this shitshow would have been over.

As a European I like the strategy document. Not only is it correct about the self-destruction we are undertaking in the name of liberalism and progressivism, but it’s also correct that the capability of Europe’s powers to be a force is declining. Instead of it being a wakeup call and triggering some self-reflection, the usual suspect parties and media are digging in their heels and doubling down on a lost future in the name of the aforementioned liberalism and progressivism.

Also while I’ve been massively critical of Russia and its war in Ukraine, I don’t buy into the mainstream line that Russia is the fundamental enemy of the USA and/or Europe. So the document gets that right too.

We all need to step up militarily and stick together.
Personally, living in Denmark. I would like to kick out the American ambassador who is only in Denmark because of his interest in Greenland. I want to close the US consulate in Nuuk, Greenland and kick them out of Pituffik Space Base, also in Greenland. Just out with them, they can not be trusted! Out, out, out, done with you!

Time for Europe to get its act together by increasing its military budgets and dramatically increasing the budget for ESA (the European Space Agency). Spending money on the military and on space not only increases security but also economic growth. In the US, for every dollar spent on the military and addition dollar of wealth is created for the general economy. Spending on space is even more lucrative, space technology also enhances security while creating an addition four to seven dollars of economic wealth for the general economy per dollar spent.

@newpapyrus

The funniest part of the new NSS is realizing Europe thought Washington would bankroll their security forever while they argued over committee statements. Twenty years of “strategic autonomy” in theory, zero autonomy in practice. You can’t blame the U.S. for finally putting it in writing.

Europe has sent more money to Russia for energy than aid to Ukraine since the start of the war. After Russia invaded crimea in 2014 Europe appeased Putin with energy contracts. 1/4 of Europe NATO countries still don't spend 2 percent on defense. Trump is not the problem. It's 500 million Europeans complaining to 320 million Americans they're not doing enough. The US can't babysit Europe forever.

Seven of the EU's 27 member countries increased the value of their imports versus a year earlier, including five countries that support Ukraine in the war. France, for example, saw purchases of Russian energy rise 40% to 2.2 billion euros while the Netherlands jumped 72% to 498 million euros, the analysis shows.

After 8 decades, it's way past due for EU to shoulder more of it's own defense...the EU has been sparking wars and infighting for a 1000 years and can't agree on which way to drive down a one way street.... time to get your act together before it's too late

The US was never our friend or bro and now they are definitely our enemy. It is a nation with its own egoistic interests. The problem already lies in their culture I mean America is the greatest and superb they say seriously.... Hope that we in Europe will finally wake up and become independent from the US as a nation which is always all the time at war is the biggest threat in my eyes. Also we have totally became dependent on the US tech wise. They have Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Nvidia etc. they can control us.

@e_326

From what I hear and read about Europe on the internet, I as an American think that too many European countries are way to authoritarian to be reliable for protecting the freedom that is an inherent right to all, I wish it was not the case but unless either America or Europe changes in culture, laws, and beliefs in an extreme way I do not see us being able to be proper allies as the values that are the most important differ to much. I sincerely wish the best for Europe and hope that you prosper.

You are all very welcome. Just waiting for the guilty and corrupt European politicians to grow a set and start acting on behalf of its citizens... This includes the rest of the western world including Canada, New Zealand, Australia and every other civilized and honest country of the world.

With this new strategy Mr. Trump declares another Authorian Leader as his friend. Mr. Trump seems to support a man who started a war which already cost some hundred thousand deads already. He is not only giving up his relationsship with EU, he is also selling USA people values of the past 70 years.

This feels so blatantly wrong and i really wonder if this man is suffering from Alzheimers.

@rainerf2807

It’s so embarrassing. It’s a massive indictment of the American people for letting these psychopaths take over. In addition to the 77.3 million who voted for Trump, another 80 million who voted third-party or didn’t bother voting at all despite all the warnings of the danger posed by Trump.

The minority of Americans who did the right thing - ie voting for Harris - don’t deserve the consequences of the stupidity and selfishness of their fellow citizens.
