is Switching To Open Source Gmail Alternatives Worth it? (yes)

Video Overview & Insights

sub n lik so i can feed my cat :D

Absolutely not

— @Somebody77654

alsoo, lemme introduce myself, I'm Zei. I'm a linux user & student majoring in computer science (specializing in software). I'm a part-time freelance web & software dev (i am fluent in C, Java, SQL, Python, HTML, CSS) I hope my vids can make your day better!

SETUP:

I use Thunderbird which is open source and private, I'm not sure if there's any premium feature, I did not see it while using the app so I might've passed it without noticing

and I wasn't sure if it's on desktop either because I downloaded it from F-Droid, so if there's anyone looking for more options other than Tuta and Proton, Thunderbird is one of them

I have proton unlimited, & use it for basically everything email wise, among other things as I use all their services. Debating but might use Tuta Mail for my business email when I get to it. Since its cheaper overall for a plan. Though at the same time I could just use my domain with proton instead, but at the same time, don't want my personal things & my business things mixing.

I had a super bad experience with Tuta, I moved everything to it, my MFA was associated as a mail on Tuta for many services and sensible info was there. Then they merged with can't remember what (it was a huge update) and I was out of my mailbox on any browser, it wouldn't even recognize my username, BUT on my mobile phone I was still able to use it, only there, and it gave me a lot of issues for almost a week, after that I ran away into Mailfence and Protonmail.

i find your videos very relaxing and informative, but i'm continually put off by your insensitive jokes. every single video makes light of "CP" or "sussy material" and its comes across as immensely immature. i'm tired of hearing these unnecessary comments as well as your frivolous trust of AI results when you search. this behavior leads to yucky people finding home in your audience and i'd rather not be a part of that. i do hope you can improve and would be more than happy to return to your videos in the future if you do.

3:20 hi i live in germany. no europe is not good for privacy. if you asked me 6 months ago i would say yes, but today no. they have also started hard pushing for id age verification everywhere here in europe. france made an id verification app that got hacked in 2 minutes and they still want to push it. i thought it wasnt really becoming much of a problem yet and i could just bypass it all and stop using whatever website or whatever if they want my id. but it has happened extremely quickly. me and my partner recently bought a package that got shipped to us through dhl. dhl is notoriously bad here, often they arrive to our house and instead of delivering our package that we are actively waiting inside of our house for, they instead write a paper telling us we can tomorrow pick it up from a kiosk nearby. its frustrating but we just take our paper and go get our package and we at least get it in the end. things changed this time, they never arrived to the house at all, there was no paper. we got a notification on the shippingnumber that we can digitally go to a dhl packetstation to get our package. we walk over there and you can only get your package if you install their app to your phone that you dont want and then also use that app to id verify yourself and then you can get your code to open your box. it is insane. you can right now call them to complain about it and they will just give you the code needed if you give them the name and shipping address but this will certainly not be the case after a few more months and you will eventually just be forced to give your id.

also proton mail is not trustable

You can quit Gmail easily enough at your end but if 80% of the people you write to are still on it then nearly all your emails are still on it.

Also worth checking out Purelymail, for best value, and Fastmail, for an amazing UI/UX (what I use). They aren't encrypted or anything, but they care about privacy.

Heyy what font are you using in your browser? is it jetbrains nerd??

@TheUnfoldOfficial-htn

Maybe compare Proton Mail to Startmail? Both Switzerland based...not sure how open source either really is.

@capnmark4

I am a happy paid sub to both Protonmail and Tuta.

Pmail UI is nicer than Tuta's.

Even if you created your gmail account 18 years ago, Google now requires ID verification to watch videos that aren't even actual adult content (because YT doesn't allow it). The same is happening or will happen with OS, sites and apps. So, YES, it's not only worthy, but becoming mandatory

A lot of us have important sh@t linked to specific email accounts: bill, direct payments, business, and social like YouTube which google forces everyone take gmail to be able to use. And don't think it's a coincidence that google got Netflix and so many on widevine. They can't leave gmail. It's just too hard to reroute their entire digital world. And I do hate gmail.

I would have switched to Proton years ago, but you only get a single email address with extremely limited storage in the free plan, the paid plans still have very restrictive storage, and only the paid plans can link to something like Thunderbird

@FawadBilgrami

Just a heads-up - on a free Proton account, they WIPED OUT ALL MAIL when it was not accessed for about a year.
Thankfully I didn't keep anything important on that particular acc, it was just used for logins.
