Sound Cloud has no real customer service, spotify is marginally better.
In this episode of the Top Music Attorney Podcast, Entertainment Attorney, Miss Krystle discusses what every independent artist needs to know before choosing between SoundCloud and Spotify. From monetization models to artist discovery tools and even hidden legal traps in the terms of service, this comparison goes far beyond which platform is more popular. With Spotify's potential remix feature on the horizon and SoundCloud's artist-centric payout system already in place, there's a lot to unpack about where your musicโand your rightsโare truly safe.

as far as I understand the AI training is actually training their algorithmic detection of AI music so they can quantify what percent of the song was AI generated (for example a whole song vs an AI generated bass line in a human produced song) and then potentially remove it. Soundcloud doesn't want AI music on it's platform because AI creations can't be copyrighted as well they are just flooding the platform taking away streams from actual artists. The AI music detection system works like the copyright detection where it will flag music and you will then have to prove it's authenticity.

08:39 Where Do We Go If We Leave Spotify?
The sad reality we find ourselves in, as artists, as musicians, as creators of the art, is that all the avenues for promoting our art involves some kind of AI system, or soon will. There is, or soon will be, no getting our stuff out into the world, bar us carving our stuff into stone tablets and hauling them to the town square, onto any platform free of AI. Furthermore, as soon as all providers and services have AI integration, the option to opt in or out will most likely be taken away from us, and we will have no choice, but stone tablets. I live in Norway, where we as a part of (not a member of) the EU, have some great laws protecting us against too much intrusion of AI in our lives, but still, we can't escape. I think artists world wide should band (pardon the pun) together and give the industry as a whole one of our fingers and call it a day. Maybe somewhere in time we can get back to making music.

I am a listener not an artist but for me Soundcloud is better than Spotify. It could be for my tastes though, I am interested in really cyberpunk style electronic music, I am not really interested in main stream music.

Alert! Soundcloud TOS now read (8/18/25) : "We will not use your content to train generative AI models that aim to replicate or synthesize your voice, music, or likeness without your explicit consent, which must be affirmatively provided through an opt-in mechanism. For the avoidance of doubt, neither SoundCloud nor any third party is allowed to use, copy or reproduce any Content delivered to the Platform under separate agreements, which is owned or controlled by third party rights holders (including artwork, images, logos, audio and audiovisual recordings (and any part thereof), underlying musical works and lyrics, and metadata) for the purposes of informing, training developing (or as input to) artificial intelligence technologies without authorization from the applicable rightsholders."

Just started using Soundcloud and I donโt mind its features. Iโm only a hobbyist music โproducerโ so Iโm not stressed about the use of my material and I think youโll be hard pressed to find a platform that isnโt using Ai in some form with or without our knowledge. I am currently having an issue with SoundCloud about monetization due to all my music is created with Suno AI. I was wondering if you had any take on how and where with SoundCloud I could provide them proof of my ownership. There is little to no information on this and on top of that they only allow one upload per song for proof but don't advise you what is actually needed for that single upload per song. Supposedly, once one song is approved then you won't have an issue with the rest. I was also dupped into paying for their integration AI "Fadr" as I was under the impression that running your music through "Fadr" provides a "tag" that tells SoundCloud that you used their integrated AI and automatically approves your monetization. This turned out to be false as I ran almost 200 songs I have crated through "Fadr" only to be rejected. Any insight on this would be helpful.

Music has become easy to make by non-musicians and now, AI. As small as the music industry is, itโs horribly over saturated. Real musicians are being pushed out.
Thereโs no monetary incentive for independent musicians to create new works of art.
Do it because you enjoy it.

Outdated Information Soundcloud has said that they do not and will not train any music with AI..
More User Perspectives
soundcloud WAS better than spotify
@StoopdmanSoundcloud T&Cs now state that you consent to A.I being trained on your work. There's no opt. out. At this rate, the only way our music will be heard is live and shitty phone videos from the crowd as no artist in their right mind would willingly put their music out there to be absorbed by the Borg
@djvoid1"New Soundcloud terms of service includes this - "You explicitly agree that your Content may be used to inform, train, develop or serve as input to artificial intelligence or machine intelligence technologies or services as part of and for providing the services."
@ForsetiThroneI cancelled my pro subscription to Soundcloud because I was having so many problems with them and not getting any answers. I have enough work to do with uploading my music to all my social media that I can really do without a battle everytime I upload to Soundcloud and the issues were always different: one time an image needed authorization even though they are my own images, another time they would question a sample even though I don't use them. I would then miss the window for monetizing during the time they put it out to more people. The final straw was when I put it the millionth support ticket and actually received an email from a bot that simply did not understand my request.
@deadlysweetnothingsuncutNO 1111 ITS FUCKING BULLSHIT PLATFORM WITH AI CUSTOMER SERVICE:::::THEY ONLY FUCK AROUND AND MESS THINGS UP
@akkamiauperfect
@TangerinaMusicDamn SoundCloud is down with AI. Hardly anywhere else to go without AI being part of the ecosystem
@HeavenlySaviourIf I have your music, I will remix it for the best customer experience.
@latinobazaarThey said this in london at music conference three yrs ago... Its moving to blockchain... Talk bout this digital conversion... Talk bout symphonic theu are great
@mryayolahAny thoughts on Bandcamp!? Or do you have a video about Bandcamp? Thank you!
@vikivankoThere needs to be a law allowing AI training opt-out. This is insane.
@ryankanefitzgeraldSo I wonder.. is it already too late? Have SC's AI already trained on my music or should I pull it off?
@ayMillmusicThe German ASCAP (Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) GEMA is fighting for stopping the Ai and Ki madness. Don't gibe away your soul for free peopleโค
@dani.papayaSo far I understood the Ki-Translater (Englisch to German),
1. Soundcloud is forcing artists to allow ki-Training with their music.
2. Soundcloud is forcing artists to give up their composer/author copyright irreversible for free.
Right?
This would be.. ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฎ
Has Top Music Attorney ever recommended a music distribution platform?
All I seem to hear from this account is donโt distribute your music with anyone.
Also, contact us for a free consultation.
Iโm pretty sure it ainโt gonna be free after that.
Is Discovery simply a version of Payola?
@eddyfree33So Iโve been releasing music for a little under 3 years. Iโve actually used SoundCloud as my distributor and Iโve used TuneCore for my distributor as well, and I have to say that as of right now, SoundCloud is a better choice for distribution. The thing I like more about TuneCore is they helped me obtain my Official Artist Channel on YouTube. Also, their customer service is top tier! Iโm still at the beginning stages with TuneCore but, Iโm yet to be convinced to switch my entire catalog over from SoundCloud to TuneCore
@therealekaineIt would have been great if SoundCloud were used by (and solely) unsigned musicians to promote themselves in their early career, and Spotify to signed artists, and artists that are not in their early career anymore (like say 5-10 years into it with quite some releases behind them). Both platforms however should have a setting to "hide" AI generated songs... cause there are people (I hope most of us), that don't want to listen to AI created content.
Another take would be, if artists that have just released one song here and there, are in one platform, while those having released albums, are on another platform. But I guess finding the perfect balance of who gets to be in one platform vs the other, would be pretty impossible. One incentive could be to pay better to up & coming artists, while a bit less to those who have made it!, but obviously will earn more in total as their music is listened to more. If that makes sense.
I distribute VIA SoundCloud. So I get out to all platforms FROM SoundCloud. But SoundCloud is where the royalties are AT! Iโm no massive artist by any means, but I make my membership back at least 5 fold each year. I can easily upload and monetise, replace files when I make a mistake (or want to make an amendment). I can connect with my fans, chat with them, and see who my listeners are and how much they listen. I LOVE Soundcloud. Awesome artist features.
@MaxwellLeSageThere a lot of scammers on Soundcloud . I did get scouted by a major recording artist on Soundcloud. He offered to get me signed to a major label. I did decline his offer to remain independent. Very disappointed to hear that Soundcloud is training AI using our music without permission. In reality they are using AI to STEAL our original music. Not posting any more music on Soundcloud. In time I will remove all my music off Soundcloud. Thank for the heads up Top Music Attorney
@groove1722Soundcloud biggest frauds in music, they have ripped off millions of artists for years, dreadful site
@djlandantimeDid you sign anything regarding AI? A yes or no would be informative.
@wasteddude9387Hi, thank you for the video.
What is the meaning of "in absence of a separate agreement that states otherwise"? This seems to imply that there may be a way to make an additional contract which counteracts this one. Also, I want to ask if this also applies to tracks set as "private"? Also, when it says "may be used to ... train develop ... Artificial intelligence or machine intelligence technologies or services as part of and for providing the services" does that mean that you agree for them to train "generative AI" or does that mean that they can train AI for running their services, such as search engines and other algorithms which decide which kinds of songs are popular etc.?
