Will a degree in an unrelated field (Theology) benefit me when applying for a job with this cert, or is it irrelevant?

If you have ever researched Information Technology certifications or Cyber Security certifications, then you have most likely heard of the Security+ from CompTIA. People historically have referred to this certification as the entry level option when trying to break into the career field, but is that still the case? The best certifications change from year to year based on new technologies and how things are evolving in the industry so it is entirely possible that things have changed.

I’ve worked in wearhouse work for a while I heard that security plus is really good and I could make 100k. I have no security knowledge would you recommend tips for me?

I got my A+, MOUS and MSCE in 2000. Most of my tests are funny to look at. Back then transcenders testing software was the big thing. I'm retired now but have 2 grandchildren are going for cyber security. I ended up doing sql and was a great report writer and did ad-hoc data dumps to excel. So asking my employers what got me the job in the beginning? Any microsoft certification and really knowing excel. The sql came later. Now I starting python just for fun with the grands.

Would Security plus and a secret clearance with the DOD through the military without a bachelors degree actually turn into any kind of job opportunity I’m supposed to start taking Security plus in September. I would love to hear some feedback from anyone.

I am taking a bachelor degree in cybersecurity, do I need this or do you recomend other certs?

Are boot camps worth it? If you need security plus for a current job, what's the fastest way to get the certificate?

Solid perspective. I’ve been sharing Security+ walkthroughs too — definitely feels like a strong first step for anyone eyeing cyber roles.

been doing IT for 15 years and am in a management position. here is my take on these. i have a few comptia certs and they are great for entry level positions. word of caution, because i have seen this many times. if you pass a few of these and are expecting a 6-figure salary right off the bat, you are going to be very disappointed. if you have sec+, net+ and a+, you will prob start off at $20-25/hour. if you are just starting your journey, my recommendation is passing a few of these certs, and get any entry level job you can, even if it isnt glamorous. stay there for a years and continue certification or an actual degree. there are many different career paths and there is not a defined progression of events. either way, this is NOT a bad cert to study for or attain.

I earned the Comptia Sec + 701 last month (Dec. 2024). I am currently halfway the Google certificate. I earned a certificate in a PCI DSS program during the summer of 2023. I have been on several interviews over the last 15 months. I will be starting another training program to improve my practice skills. Even after all of this, I am still unemployed. It has been a long journey.

Hi jon I have completed the google cybersecurity cert , now I am looking to land my first job in the field as a cybersecurity analyst/SOC analyst, but i lack the needed requirements for the job offers.
So I want to know wheather I should start with the CompTIA Security+ certificate or start doing one of the SOC learning paths such as letsdefend or HTB or Tryhackme soc cert ( i think blue team level one is a good choice also) to gain hands on experience, practical skills and the knowledge needed for this job , pretty lost where to start ??

Yes i will definitely go for the Security +, because it may make my resume look good and it's not that expensive, since this field is what i want to persuade in. Even if it alone may not be sufficient to land me a job, but at least i will learn some new things while preparing for it, and also i'm so curious to try it's exam just like everyone else.

should do the basic Certifications along work, one does not suffice the other.

(Many thanks for the great video)

Hey man thanks for your insights!
I am quite confused whether to go for the Network+ or Security+, any suggestions?

@TorqIQ
@

hhmm can i do it in 6weeks then onto my plan

@ZeNex74
@

not sure i want to do it but i have my 30% discount, just finished the google cyber cert.. very basic. already have a few azure associate and 2024 plan is HTb soc1, HTB CDSA, splunk core and ejpt. plus linux and python on side.. but can i fit security+ in when its mainly theory..?

@ZeNex74

I am currently conflicted between going for Security+ and SSCP. I'm aspiring to be an Information Security Analyst , will be graduating come this October with a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science:Cyber Security. I passed my Certified in Cybersecurity certification from ISC2 back in April (yet to pay my AMF) because im thinking i should just commit to SSCP and pay my AMF then as it does fall in line with my one of my end goals being to achieve CISSP certification in the distant future. I would like to know, what varying knowledge would i miss out on if i do SSCP over Security+? Does Sec+ cover more practical concepts when it comes to security? I noticed from the CC certification domains they go more inline with the ISO and NIST security frameworks which is knowledge i want to gain

After watching although the information on your career was very helpful but I did not really find an answer to the video. Is it actually worth it anymore? I'm seeing more and more CompTIA certs being looked at as just okay to have. So, unlike when I was in my first college and A+ and Network+ were basically viewed as essential to get into a decent company, now not so much. Do you feel that the Security+ is still an essential cert for entry level? I know there are better certs now, but even for a SOC position maybe? Thanks for the great videos!

Thanks Jon, this is a sense of relief.

Security+ is a joke. I work with people that don't even have it or management pressures them so these same coworkers panic and look at exam dumps. They still don't know what they're doing to this day and have no desire to actually improve security or investigate incidents.

@Katsumato0
@

Only worth it if needed for a government job or work is paying for it. Otherwise its just overpriced pap.

@kite2surf

it's a certification I am looking forward to acquire although it quite expensive especially as student in my country. Like to also add that your guide to cyber security ebook been really helpful since I came across it last year. Many Thanks Jon Good😃

Thank you for posting. I’m only 6 months into my IT career and I’m trying to make my way to cybersecurity. I appreciate you sharing your thought process and journey from 2013. It sounds like I’m in a similar situation. Question… You were able to pass the Security + exam after only studying for a month? What are some things that made you successful?

@Mr.2E
@

I've lost count of the number of times I've gotten half-way through studying for Security+ only to get derailed. I was finally going to take it last September because the 12 month window to use the exam voucher was almost up. Then the day before the exam, I realised I hadn't seen the usual exam reminder. I had rescheduled that exam so many times, I thought I had done it this one last time. I hadn't and I had actually missed my exam two days prior. This year I'm not booking until I've finished at least eight weeks of continuous study!
