📘 AI can write your code. It can't tell your story. Behavioral interviews are the new differentiator, and I wrote the book on them: https://geni.us/BehavioralInterview-yt

Could it be a red flag that you have a business and the company might think you’ll prioritize it over your job?

I would say to skip the "create your own experience " part if it's a job you're trying to do. Unless you really do want to be an entrepreneur, getting paying customers for your product will be a lot of work, and not necessarily the best thing to do if your goal is to get a job. The previous steps he listed out are great, and just doing those should be good enough. Finding someone with a real-world problem and building a solution by going deep into one specific technology that matches the kind of work you want to do, and then creating content with what you've built, learned, etc. Doing this while applying to jobs, reaching out to recruiters, and making connections on LinkedIn will surely get you the job.

Did this since 2023. The experience of ownership and execution is unmatched. It’s a marathon at this point. Passed multiple screenings now that I hadn’t before, fingers crossed.

Excellent suggestions and makes sense. If you do not have experience and you need to prove your tehnical profiency, presenting yourself as a founder of a startup and demostrating your capabilites through the creation of the startup / business is trully a differentiator...but how long will this be the case 😅😅😅😅

In general I think there's some great advice there. One thing though is not trying to do all at once. Trying to learn a tech in depth AND trying to build a business with marketing, customer support, etc. at the same time will leave you stretched thin.

I love that the comments provide the evidence that this is good advice, because at least half of them are upset and essentially refusing to do these things, which are precisely the people you’ll move in front of by doing this.

Thank you for sharing your experience in the corporate world; I've definitely picked your brain and learned a few things.

However, what would you advise an SWE who owns an LLC to do to get contracts out there?

Thanks in advance for your response.

@RipHamilton7

I work in big tech and people occasionally reach out for referrals which I don’t mind doing because of the referral bonus (and it’s not a huge amount of people anyway) but when someone starts to ask me “curious” questions about the tech stack and the work and blah blah, but I can smell the fact that they’re just trying to be polite before asking for a referral I get annoyed. Like you can tell the whole conversation is this fake nicety song and dance they feel they need to do before asking and the convo feels so forced.

@fb767

Just change out of tech ! Life is more simple and rewarding !

@dhanraj2900

To be unique and get views.... These advice are so ludicrous , almost taking advantage of the desperation of the unemployed

@Nopanop
@

Nice. This isn’t career advice, this is a Trojan horse psyop to kick start the small business boom.

@foodiusmaximus
@

The “solve your friend’s problem” advice is a bit outdated now. For pretty much any real problem you can think of, there are dozens of apps. This is not actually thinking outside of the box, this is an obvious thing every aspiring developer comes up with – to quickly discover there are not so many unsolved problems
