I Went to Classic Alfa Goodwood Track Day 2026 - Driving in One of the Rarest GTVs ever built

Video Overview & Insights

I headed to Goodwood for the Classic Alfa track day 2026 expecting a relaxed day of paddock walks, great cars, and some track action.

Carefull...If you get a GTV 6, you're going to be looking at all the other legendary Group 1, Group N race cars or uniquely South African cars of the 80'a - 90's such as the BMW's 745i, 333i, M535is, 325iS, 528i, the Ford Cortina XR6, Sierra XR8 or Opel GSI Superboss. Maybe if you'd want to go a bit older there's the Basil Green Ford Capri Perana, the "Little Chev" Firenza Can Am, BMW 530 MLE or Mini 1275 GTS. If you really want to stick to Alfas, there's the very rare Alfa Giulietta Group One of which less than 200 were built. There are so many homologation or uniquely South African cars - it's a slippery slope :-) Not that it's South African model though, I just thought about the Alfa Sprint Speciale - sure you'd like that one as well. I've seen one or two in Johannesburg over the years.

What I didn’t expect… was seeing something genuinely rare.

Four Alfa Romeo 3.0 GTV6 homologation specials turned up — cars built in tiny numbers (around 200) for racing, developed to take on BMW in period touring car racing. Seeing one is rare… seeing four together felt almost unreal.

What a show!

Even better, I got invited into one of them for three parade laps of Goodwood. Sitting in a 3.0 V6 GTV6 that I grew up admiring, hearing that engine at full song around Goodwood, was one of those moments that sticks with you.

Alongside that, the paddocks were packed with incredible Alfas — from 105-series classics to Montreal, 1750s, race builds, and everything in between. And of course, plenty of time speaking to owners and even meeting some of you watching the channel.

Bought one of those GTV6 in the mid 80's for the looks mainly. In hindsight I bought someone else problems as nothing was working as it should, for example turning on the indicators turned on the headlight instead and so on. Didn't have to live with it too long as the engine exploded on the autobahn after owning it for just 3 weeks. As you can imagen that experience turned me of Alfas for good. Now I just look at them on car shows and Youtube :)

This is what I love about events like this — cars being used, stories being shared, and a reminder of why we get into classics in the first place.

And I might have left with a slightly dangerous new obsession… the rare GTV6

Great to meet you Rohan, it certainly was a great day on track. Yes, those GTV6’s were stunning.

I once was walking thru a salvage yard in Chico, CA in 2009 and there was a minty GTV-6 sitting on period correct Speedline wheels. I went to this salvage yard weekly and sadly the only thing that got removed off that car was the wheels before they crushed it. I'm assuming it was a cash for clunkers victim. The parts market for these cars is so niche and small on the west coast. I only went to pull stuff off Mk2/Mk3 VWs to flip. I thought about buying the wheels, but odd bolt pattern.

Lovely cars, but in my opinion having owed three Alfas. The most beautiful one is the 1750 .

Of all the cars I've owned and there has been alot, the Alfa and Lotus have given the most pleasure in hand, with the Alfa's having the better soundtrack 🤌

I remember getting a GTV 3.0L spin (as Passenger) from the Head mechanic at Arnold Chatz when he took one out for a test drive, fantastic cemented my love of Alfas forever. Mine was just a humble 33 Gold edition. GO ON you know you want one!!!🤣

I can't believe how many GTV's with the smooth nose and single headlights were there. That's my favorite look for those and not so common here in the states.

Wow - how do you get tickets for this, would love to go? Thanks for sharing.

You definitely need a 3.0L GTV! That said, I think the Brits plant churned out quite a few unique models in the 70s and early 80s thanks to the localisation programme driven by the government with a requirement for over 70% of the vehicle weight to be produced locally. Another rarity that springs to mind is the Alfasud Speedwagon and the Panel Van something that could be useful for visiting the autojumbles if you could still find one!

Can't believe it was 30 years ago we did yhe Kylami trip. Remember we nearly collected a donkey in the fog going through Stutterheim.
