MY BOOK:
Buy my book, "The Linchpin Writer": https://amzn.to/3U5ul14
There was an old radio drama series in the 1970s called CBS Radio Mystery Theater. They did hundreds of 45 minute long dramas. I've heard nearly all of them. Some of them are pretty darn good, but dated. I'm thinking that a good writing exercise would be to take one of the stories, update it a bit and write it in prose. form. The plot and characters are already worked out.

00:00 Intro
too fast, too many words, too fast editing. people will click off lots. work on your video entrances
1:10 Write a story about something that happened to you
2:32 Change the Point of View
I find myself already doing most of these things without thinking about it, but after getting a framework like this it suddenly seems daunting and something that has to happen or whatever. I lack structure tho so thanks anyway
4:00 Create a Ticking Clock
5:28 Create Props/Objects
object: you mean like chainsaws
7:17 Create a Transitional Situation
8:46 Add a World Event
these steps with the explanations and examples given made me realise how much this method is actually used in media without even understanding it as a consumer
10:14 Add Binary Forces
11:57 Freytag's Pyramid
Is it actually possible to write a story without a big plot? Something that finds its essence in sensations, scents, vibes, especially feelings. Something just like someone taking care of their small market while waiting to see again their lover after a long seperation? Is it possible to simply be cosy and comforting without dramas?
13:41 Experiment
Thanks for this! I struggle with "Idk just do whatever you want" advice and find I work better when within constraints that I can follow until I'm comfortable leaving them.
More User Perspectives
You play chess and run? Lol, I do both also. 😂
@isaacgzgonzalezThe hard part for me about number two is me wanting to write a sort of love story and number two has me thinking deeply and realizing I don’t know her perspective fully
@Apekhan47For number 1, how exactly do you write sci fi or fantasy then? Ive never been to hell, but maybe i want to write about a character that is sent there.
@skynotaname2229Thank you Sir
@Bio_by_kavithaRule #10: make the protagonist a woman. As is the Fox chessplayer.
With the antsgonist a straight white male.
Hes too annoying.. i got to 52 seconds.. bye
@mercerfamilyadventures4613Octopus t shirt🤭my protection animal, i am so guided
@ShukriAbdulle-u4l4mthank you; here's my first attempt;
As I pulled into the deserted highway, my car's tires erupted one after another—dozens of flats—prompting me to grab the liquidtube tire sealant. Meanwhile, a secret servant agent, writing in his report, noted my frantic attempts to patch the relentless punctures before the fuel gauge hit empty—time was running out. Suddenly, the sealant's strange, iridescent glow transformed the road ahead into a shimmering portal, revealing flying saucers hovering just beyond the horizon. Transitioning from roadside repairs to intergalactic wonder, I watched as the ships descended, their metallic hulls reflecting the dim light of a distant star. In 1942, world tensions reached a fever pitch, and the sight of alien craft stirred whispers of secret government experiments and cosmic alliances. With the clock ticking and history shifting, I realized that fixing tires was only the beginning of a much larger cosmic game.
Yup! Got my 👍🏾 and sub. Came across this at the right time after a few convos with some film/tv producers. Thanx for the insight 🤟🏾
@theoryis4236the article this fool is referring to is SHORT STORY: A PROCESS OF REVISION by ANTONYA NELSON
@blewmyfluteI am so sick of ticking clock stories. Is there such a thing as ticking clock fatigue... because I've got it? It feels like I'm constantly being manipulated and prodded, knead, and stroked.
@randolphpinkle44823:31 why is that house missing part of the railing
@dariusstarrett8837Niobium superaloy
@sanjugeorge2786i stopped listening when I heard 'Maybe there's a market for this story'.
This video is not about how to make stories, but more about how to make a catchy story that appeals to people. People that will eventually give money.
This is why american movies nowadays are so boring, it's because they always respond to a 'market'.
My advise would be : if you want to be creative, don't project what you are making to people's expectations. Just do it for you, enjoy your idea, at let it grow by your own appreciation.
Otherwise you are very likely to restrain yourself, because your mind will be invaded with intrusive thoughts related to talent and success.
This is by the way why only very few people enjoy doing art. Most people think they are constantly judged by others, even if they don't even share what they do.
It's tragic. Art shouldn't be a way to achieve '''success'''.
Unless you want to make money of course.
Well. The rough draft is a story your tell yourself (she says as she quietly takes out her laptop and realizes her shorts are absolutely garbage...) 😅 no, really, this is a great framework for shorts. It confirmed that indeed there was something missing from my stories and my instincts to add it were correct!
@jessicajordan680nobody ever goes for the weak female lead.
@ithurtsbecauseitstrueYou know a lot of people love to add a lot lot of filler to their content and it's okay if you make a long video but it would be nice if there was a more condensed diversion more to the point version. This version is good but again it would be nice if there was an alternate version. For extra clarity
@magi7-d6y5qAlice Munro, may she rot in pieces.
@13c11ais your shirt supposed to make me feel inadequate right out of the gate?!? lol
@tonyb8660Write a story about something that happened to you
Start with a personal experience but you can change details or heighten the stakes. For example, an illness could become life threatening or a simple crush could turn into a love triangle.
Change the point of view
Retell the story from different perspectives like a neighbor, spouse, child, or even an object. Pick a viewpoint with something at stake.
Create a ticking clock
Add a time-based pressure that drives suspense. For example, a chess tournament countdown or a deadline like Cinderella’s midnight.
Create props or objects
Include a meaningful object that affects the story or symbolizes something important. For example, a father’s championship ring representing achievement.
Create a transitional situation
Show a moment where the character moves from one phase of life to another. For example, deciding to participate in a chess tournament for the first time.
Add a world event
Connect the story to a real event or cultural touchpoint so the reader can relate. For example, cheating scandals in recent chess tournaments.
Add binary forces
Introduce opposing forces or conflicts to create tension. Examples are innocent versus experienced, winner versus loser, or hunter versus prey.
Freytag’s Pyramid
Structure the story with exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. You can adjust the structure to fit short stories.
Experiment
Try unusual or creative approaches like hermit crab fiction, metafiction, unreliable narrators, or writing with constraints. The goal is to explore possibilities.
short summary :)
Foxbook!
@LilAndDurkTChallaI was also admitted to a mental hospital. That was ... different.
@SweetUniverseI was homeless- how's that for an experience?
@SweetUniverseThis was really helpful! Thank you
@CakeontheroofYou have amazing points that have helped me build my story but pushing people to build around current events is wild. Sure it can influence the story telling but we should never write a fiction story to what is currently happening. That is how we get to the current geo politics that we are facing
@charlesjohn316"House of Asterion" has two different meanings, lit. a house - as a building of Asterion - as a minotaur, but I just realized that it also means house - as a family, of Asterion - as a minotaur's grandfather and the founder of the dynasty. I love Borges. My beloved writer!
@arturhashmi6281When writing a story, how can I ensure that characters make decisions based on their own established personality rather than my author perspective, while still guiding the plot toward a desired ending (like a happy ending)? For example, if I create a very intelligent antagonist who logically shouldn’t lose, what is the correct narrative approach to resolve the conflict without forcing the character to act out of nature?
@Xtreme_HeatLove a critique or two about what I been doing on my channel
@MacMovement"The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher" does the title give the reader a connection to the story because everyone hates Margaret Thatcher? I would read that book because I would love to read a story about somebody assassinating Margaret Thatcher.
@cosmic-fortytwoWhat a load of rubbish. Check out CS Lewis advice for how to write.
@plywoodcarjohnson5412POV of inanimate object: My life as a bicycle seat. ... setting female sorority.
@martincollins6632loved it
@thegiftboxofficialpkI want to create a story
@Renato_Douglas55710:28 You woulda thought that would've been spotted in editing 👀
@BurtKocainAlthough I didn't meet her, Antonya Nelson had a presence at Warren Wilson's MFA program when I was there in the mid 90s. I saw at least one of her readings, so it's neat to hear this name again.
@adamoneil7435Please send recommendations for a collection of short stories:
@syllirabbit3:02 How on earth do you even write a story from the perspective of an inanimate object that’s not even sentient?
