Video Overview & Insights
When Kaitlin Wichmann, 31, decided to move from Kansas City to Lisbon, Portugal, she knew freelancing as a digital marketing strategist would be her primary source of income. Today, despite only working 20 hours a week, she still makes about $7,000 a month on average.

Apparently, people have lost the ability to read or do basic calculations. She states herself that she makes between $2,400 and $12,000 a month, and the video description says she makes about $7,000 a month on average.
That puts her yearly income at around $84,000 gross. Good money, obviously, but not the same as being ultra-wealthy by USA standards. Add in taxes and so on, and now we are looking at around 60k to 65k. So yes, she is doing fine, maybe a bit more than fine but not on the level many in the comment section appear or want to believe.

This should not be allowed. People like her destroy the life of the locals.
How so? She takes up space that were supposed to house a portuguese family at โฌ800 per month.
She probably pays โฌ3000. A loose situation.

why do people sitting behind a laptop call that work? It's not justified to people who are slaving away doing something like construction.

12000$ a month ofc she is okay. She would be okay everywhere too lol
@sionbarzad5371We live in Portugal and I hope you never have to retire because you won't get any money! ๐ญ
@francescabento170512k a month? Just overpaid!
@han_zei_bu_liang_liDo not you think, Europeans are less superficiail than Americans? Americans talk a lot to say nothing! You are very informativo though! Good luck to you ๐
@roberthopman-f4yWhat a world the youth of today live in. Tap a few buttons on the computer and make tons of money. No personal exertion, no travel to work, no expending physical energy.
@alfredabreo94965.17. There are some guys working and nonchalantly walking around on the roof of a house without a harness. Crazy.
@alfredabreo9496The best way to learn Portuguese is to find a Portuguese boyfriend. Anyhow, almost everyone speaks English in Portugal even the old folks as we have had British people living with us for centuries
@nunosilva6787What a wonderful experience to explore and live in Portugal. Remote working is best when you're in right place.
@lexidyI wish you all the best Kaitlin...hope you continue to live and work from Lisbon and I apologize for the stupid comments I've seen here, regarding your personal income.
@rucas5558Worth noting Lisbon works for people at very different income levels โ not just $12k/month freelancers. Most expats living well there are doing it on โฌ1,800-2,500/month. The local minimum wage context matters: Portugal rewards people who come with modest Western savings or remote income. The story of one high earner is compelling TV, but it's not the full picture of who's actually making the move work.
@Portugal_Lifestyle_AppShe picked a right occupation
@Bocca202Portugal welcomes you 100%,you work, you want leurn the culture and language, the same we cannot say of the hundred migrants coming to the country, all the best to you
@sergiocosta2018Watching this while visiting in Lisbon and scouting out places to retire later. Itโs already so much cheaper than Silicon Valley that living expenses isnโt even a concern. Only question is whether to buy or rent.
@MichaelChengSanJoseLisbon is an amazing place to live if you do not pay tax in Portugal and make earnings from places like USA or Germany.... Most of Portugal makes 1.2k monthly ( gross )... and Whoever makes a bit more faces around 40-50% taxes ( IRS and SS ).... I'm positive sure that she does not declare income here, and when they invoice here, they usually open a Recibos verdes and declare the minimum, just to be able to renew Residency card... Ideally is that government would create Tax for people with incompatible IRS being expats, so that taxes for buying properties or renting would be like 200%, otherwise it is impossible to live in Portugal working for Portugal, within a few years Portugal will have no companies or business... And it will only be left sub-jobs to serve foreigners that are living here and working for US companies.
@vt4663Iโm also American and also shocked at her salary. To all the Portuguese people complaining, just know even for Americans thatโs a lot. Sheโs probably making closer to like 200k? Doing anything freelance you will generally make more money and the space she is in, ads, is very profitable and this video is 7 months old. Ads have just increased even more in profitability since then. Even in the US she would be rich and as she said, living in California as she was (LA). Even Americans making half what she makes are considered rich for a normal average person, so she truly is up there lol. Obviously you can make way more than her in the US but after 200k youโre no longer average in the US
@shappuden6608I can't believe how anyone choosing Portugal for long term and don't go to Porto. There is a big difference in so many levels.
@HikeUnknownThe question is: do you pay taxes to Portugal? To what Portugal is giving you? ๐ค
@JoseFerreira-vj3lqDo not believe a word of this bullshitter. the world of digital marketing is saturated with freelancers and most barely make $1000 a month. It is very competitive and in portugal there is almost no market for digital freelancers. My best pal also lived in Portugal, after having obtained an MBA from Cornell and she was struggling despite having worked for Google and Meta in the past. The reality is that the world of freelancers is tough due to the competition - so take this video with a grain of salt. People always hype up their salaries on youtube.....
@sbmedex3421im tired of the Blck FATIGUEโข here in the US
@redditneo89There is no portuguese culture or portuguese in downtown Lisbon. She lives in a disneyland for rich people an tourists.
@carlas.pimentel2803Portugal really is beautiful and I will always say that, the plants and scenery is breathtaking. I will say though, she makes so much more than most anyone does living here. I do find it insane that sheโs still barely able to speak in Portuguese. I mean, Lisbon is definitely partially English speaking but atleast try to be part of our culture. If no one tryโs to fit it, soon no one will even be truly Portuguese anymore. Please donโt move if you just like the idea of living here, move if you will live as one of us
@redsonlmk1With this monthly salary you can live in luxury. Combined, we might scratch together $2000 on social security. I wonder if we could make it there.
@booneland1297Iโm an American and have literally been where sheโs at in Lisbon, Portugal on a vacation. Lots to do there. I plan to retire between there and the US. However, I plan to budget and spend a lot less than her.
@travelingdude1621you look older
@ShellyIlovemeTVThatโs a good month. 24k-12K
@ashlee2142If you earn $12,000 per month and you live in Portugal for at least 183 days per calendar years, you pay a very income tax in Portugal. Portuguese income tax is far larger than US income tax. If you are working as a 1099 contractor, you will be paying self-employment tax on top of your Portugues tax. If you want tax advice, let me know. I could potentially save you many thousands of dollars spent on tax liabilities. There are strategies that can be legally utilitized to avoid all of your Portuguese taxation and to reduce SE taxation.
@versusminus77Italy is much better than Portugal it's a lot mode beautiful Italian foods are a lot more delicious than Portuguese foods the Italian economy is definitely a lot better than Portuguese economy and Italians are oh yeah so much more attractive than Portuguese

@mohanmot1234I'm in Germany and I believe the median and average incomes here are higher than in Portugal. Still, 12k a month is insanely high. You can live really really really REALLY well off of that. Congratulations to her for having that salary, but even below average IQ people (I'm being nice here) should be able to live off of a salary this high.
@tonypaellaLeaving the US for Europe or Asia isn't running away! I love seeing more people realize they have the option to leave.
@DemitaForwardThis girl is rich. Good for her but not relatable
@Emz1808She says rent is reasonable and is the same as a city in the U.S.. These people are destroying Portugal. PORTUGAL ISN'T THE U.S.. THIS IS GROSS.
@Daishan-q7l40 hours a week towards myself sounds so wonderful. I'm on the way to that!!!!!
@SeeMarissaMaking $12k per month working 20 hours...? I think you can be happy just about anywhere with that kind of life and money.
@WeekendGamerTXHi
