I have recently (two months ago) acquired a dog because a friend of mine died and was not found for four days. The dog was in the house with the corpse all this time. During a report to police he was found and removed. Dog was removed to county pound. I was ask by family to pick up dog and give him a home. Of course I said yes as I knew Voodoo. He knew me but was always somewhat cautious about trusting me so I did not know how he would respond to me taking him home especially after what he had been through. He has become my guardian and growls at anyone who comes near him or me. He would not even take a treat from me when I would visit his home! Now he lives in my room and won't let anyone else in the family near him. He is a beautiful dog but it is very troublesome as he frightens the people who live with me. I will not turn him out though because he looks at me with that 'look' that you so eloquently elucidated in your study. I don't know what breed he is but he looks just like the dog who won the National Dog show on our American Thanksgiving day! My son sent your story to me. He had a Belgian shepherd as a boy. He was a great dog. Again thank you for a wonderful enlightening story about our best friends!

@saoirse9197My rescue stray was a gold and white Lassie collie set on corgi-short legs. He had followed a friend home - who didn’t need a dog but knew that I did.
I had been struck down by a mysterious illness, which caused no pain or fever but kept me in the grip of a tiredness which would quickly progress to complete muscle failure if I so much as crossed a room.
Muttley reluctantly moved in, and condescended to treating this as his home, only occasionally absenting himself for a few days when the call of a neighbouring bitch in heat required his attention.
We gradually got fonder of each other. I found out my illness was ME, and took practical steps to keep up an active life, including getting a wheelchair. We lived on a tree-lined avenue; Muttley liked finding and retrieving short stout sticks. One evening we were out front together; I was waiting for my lift to a nearby nightclub. Muttley found a stick, brought it to me, I threw it, he brought it back, I tried to take it, he refused to let go. The ensuing tugging game found us flying down the pavement, Muttley running backward with the stick firmly between his teeth.
We were halfway to the club by the time my lift arrived. At a time when the only service dogs were for the blind, this began years when Muttley pulled me in my wheelchair, even in London!

@PinkSummer1017I had heard about the Belyaev experiment before. The thing I found most interesting was th flip side of the experiment. When breeding the generations of tamer foxes, he also bread the rejected foxes for the same amount of generations. The end result was a line of morre dog like foxes and the other line which resulted in a line of extremely agressive and hostile foxes that would try to attack even from inside their cages. The aggessive line also went through physical changes including coats that became very black.

@ozankabakyesheplayedcentrebackWhen raised by hand from pups, pure wolves behave so much like domestic dogs, that they can be walked on a leash in a city street, and everyone mistakes them for a domestic breed.
It seems unlikely that domestication was really a hurdle. More likely the "delay" was in humans concieving of and developing training to use dogs as obedient servants with non-human abilities.
