How to store POTATOES (without a root cellar)

Video Overview & Insights

We recently harvested a crop of potatoes in our backyard garden in North Texas. We don't have a root cellar or second refrigerator, so we have to store our harvest indoors at room temperature. It's also possible to leave your potatoes in the ground up until the first freeze, but we need our raised bed to grow other crops. This video shows you the important concepts in storing potatoes for long-term enjoyment.

The potatoes must be in perfect and healthy condition, they must not be damaged, otherwise they will rot within a few days, there are several bad potatoes in the box, be careful :)

Don’t refrigerate because the starches will turn into sugar and won’t taste the same

Is it best to store potatoes without washing them first? I brushed most of the soil off, but don't plan to wash them until I use them.

I will never grow potatoes but I'm writing a post-apocalypse story and I had no idea how someone might make potatoes last in a bomb shelter. Thank you!

Another north texas gardener here, thanks for the video! Have you tried leaving potatoes in the ground overwinter for seed?

You really know your gardening Dina ! Thank you so much ! Deep south Texas has been really hot already and more to come. Hope it doesn't damage our gardens! Take care.
