how to read more books this year (and actually enjoy it)

Video Overview & Insights

here's to another wonderful year of reading! shoot me your recommendations in the comments :)

Also, if you haven't read in a while but are looking to get back into it, try children's books. Reading is a skill, and not just the "reading" part, but the act of visualizing what you're reading in a way that's satisfying is a skill, one that can degrade if you haven't been upkeeping it. Children's books are shorter and intended to be easier to read, and there's a lot of fantastic ones out there. Just because they're intended for kids doesn't mean they're bad. I read some of Lemony Snicket's books to get out of a reading slump a few years ago. But even now, when I'm able to comprehend complex "adult" books I make a point to still read children's literature because it I enjoy it.

1. Have a variety of books laying around that will match your mood.
2. Read shorter and easier books.
3. Read multiple books at once (occasionally)
4. Give up on books you don't like. You don't need to announce to anyone that you're doing this.
5. Read books that you find interesting.

Omg “Alone” is one of my favorite books.

Your library probably has an app where you can borrow free books. This is great if you’re a mood reader because you can start or stop reading from tons of books when you wish. I like this better than physical books because I have so many different mood genres as well as interests I grow out of that I end up feeling a lot of pressure from my books to either read or declutter them. And after awhile the books feel dusty and don’t interest me as much as a new shiny book on the app. Mine uses the cloud library app and I can create a save list and see when books are available to borrow. I only wish there was a better way to read than on my phone, but I’m hesitant to pay 200 to buy an android ereader to have the app or another ereader that I have to transfer every single book. Although there are studies showing we remember what we read physically more than we do digitally and that may be worth considering.

I use the goodreads app. It’s nice to have a list of all the books you have read, want to read, and reading goals(but I started making my reading goal for the year 1 book so i can still see how many I read but there is no pressure)You can tag books or make shelves and I like to use a shelf labeled DNF. This way I can see if there is any books I started and might want to finish later. One trick I’ve recently found is because I’m a mood reader and sometimes I read multiple books as well as try and put down books I stopped adding what I’ve been reading until I’m finished. I found when I added a book it started to feel like an obligation to finish or a pressure to finish quicker. I just want to enjoy reading again I’m not here to compete.

I have 498 books in my digital TBR! What’s your advice for how to tackle these books?

I love to read, or rather I would love to read, I have an issue when reading, I forget characters. This means I am reading a way, enjoying the book, then, a character is mentioned, for example, Mary comes into the room, I instantly am, " Who is Mary?" So I have to go back through the book to find when Mary is first mentioned, I carry on reading, when all of a sudden..... "John reaches over", "Oh no! Who is John" and the procedure starts all over again. This first came to light, when I read Agatha Christie books, too many people to follow. But I loved her books. It got so bad, that I actually wrote down on paper who was who, kinda killed reading.

My ass bought the count of Monte Cristo as my first book since highschool (I’m 27 now). And my god it feels like I’m back in a class having to look up all the words, locations, and real life people. I feel like I’ll know the entire history of France before I’m done haha but that’s what it’s about

1. Keep more books around you than you want to read. Works for me kinda pressures me to read.
2. Read shorter and easier books. I disagree. Just read what interests you.
3. Read multiple books at once. Not for everybody. Different genres. It’s like having different friends. You don’t always vibe with every friend every day.
4. Give up on bad books. No one cares if you do or don’t.
5. Read books you find interesting.

people need to not be coerced into reading books. reading books has been a discourse but what no one understands is that we can only read and be moved even a little bit when our bodies are in a calmer state. when the crisis is calling to you in some form of other and when the world is in such a state, reaching out to pick up books will never come to us. for that effort has to be put in. and being shoved down our throats to read as a choice is coercion, not choice. people back then read because they weren’t in crisis that’s why reading for pleasure existed. before having such a conversation, is anyone actually thinking about the fact that there aren’t any such conditions for us to read books. white people are always talking about reading books. you don’t see many people of colour doing that because we don’t have libraries. amazon is the only way. obviously that doesn’t give us even a slight bit of variety to choose from or explore from an authentic feeling. if you have so much money and have read so many books, well, start a cause and condition for people who can’t read due to lack of conditions. come to smaller countries and help us build libraries. or talk about it for us instead of “read more” “how to read more”
what are you doing by posting on youtube? obviously making more money. thank you for your nonsense.

Great video, liked the joke about people who read 100+ books a year and agreed with most the points made especially the pausing or giving up on books, this year I stopped reading "without warning" because it was way too long and I was just getting back into reading and "How to lose a time war" because I really didn't like it.

I often read books which are very big and sometimes I feel like it’s getting hard for me to keep going reading because then I feel like I want to read less. But I feel like I can’t pause the big book then and reading a book with less pages. It’s hard for me sometimes to keep reading big books even though I Love to. 😭🙏🏻

Reading multiple books really help. I have at least have one ebook and one physical book going at all times, but usually 3 sometimes 4 depending on the books.

Good ideas, Thanks. You might consider not having music playing while you are speaking. The background music makes it harder to hear your words. 1. Not everyone hears as well as you do. 2. Many people aren't native English speakers. 3. The music doesn't add to your message. 4. The viewer may have other music playing. 5. If the viewer wants music, he/she can play his own music while watching.

Hi, I love reading but sometimes I'm just not really in the mood for it and I hate it when that happens because I want to read much more. I feel like this video will help me so thank you. Also, do you have any recommendations for me if I loved reading the harry potter series and the fellowship of the ring( I'm currently in the middle of the two towers)?

I rotate books between books I'm more likely to enjoy (sci-fi, but whatever genre fiction floats you're boat), and books I'll find hard (classics, literary fiction, yadda yadda). And to actually get through a book, I set a timer for forty-five minutes (which is about how long I can stay focused--though I won't stop myself from going over it).

i've felt guilty about not being able to keep up with english books (even my favorite genre) because my english level is not good enough to understand and feel comfortable reading without translating words, so i've given up many times, but hope that one day i will be able to read english books without feeling nervous ❤

Really suggest buying used books from local bookstores or antique stores, even some bigger bookstores have used books which are about a third of the price of new books! And depending on the antique store you can get books quite cheap, and libraries are always a great solution.

I recently switched schools and I have always been a good reader but I absolutely hate the schools selection of books.
I have also noticed my retention is going down and I have to get these AR points (I am in 11th and they are making me do this lol)
Any retention tips?

"the author's not gonna come find you" HAHAHAHA that made me laugh. I was always reading 1 book at a time, but i started to incorporate other books. Now I have a morning daily read which I been enjoying. And then I have an Enjoyable and like a "Deep Work" Book that I actively read. Some days I don't want the intense reading and just want to read a few pages not LOCKED In to the book but just casual reading. One thing I do that I been doing since I started reading more, is I leave the Book Open on the page I am at, FACING ME so anytime Im at my desk it facing me like "Yo READ Mofo". I don't feel guilty now for having a backlog of books lol. I still pull a random book I have already read off the shelf from time to time, flip it open to a random page and will read from wherever it is to the end of that chapter.
