How to READ Faster and RETAIN More πŸ§ πŸ“š

Video Overview & Insights

How do you read faster and retain more? These are my top tips on reading skills.

This is so good. I have subscribed immediately. Continue the giid work sir.

β€” @MichaelUmeh-f5e

The average American reads four books a year. Compare that to the average CEO who reads four to five books a month, and it’s easy to see how reading one book a week, 52 books a year, is a huge advantage in business, learning, and life. There’s no denying that leaders are readers.

I love the topic of today’s episode. Reading is important to me because I grew up with learning challenges from a brain injury. It took me a few extra years to learn how to read and it was one of my biggest challenges. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping you unlock your reading superpower.

Truly a hidden gem.

in brief:

This video discusses the challenges of reading and how to improve one's reading speed and comprehension. It explains that most people only read a few books per year, while CEOs read four to five books per month. Reading is crucial in today's knowledge economy because it allows individuals to learn and grow faster.

The video suggests the following steps to read one book a week:

1. Keep an active book list.

2. Test your reading speed by timing yourself for 60 seconds and counting the number of lines read.

3. Calculate how long it takes to finish a book by dividing the total number of words in a book (approximately 64,000) by your reading speed in words per minute.

4. Schedule your reading time, treating it as an important appointment.

To reduce subvocalization (reading words out loud in your head), the video recommends stretching yourself by reading faster, listening to music without lyrics, and using pattern interrupts such as humming, chewing gum, or counting in your head.

The video also discusses the concept of chronotypes, or natural variations in people's alertness levels throughout the day. It suggests identifying your chronotype and reading during times when you are most alert to avoid fatigue and frustration.

One of the biggest frustrations people have is eye fatigue, which occurs due to fixations when reading. Fixations are stops people make while reading, and these stops consume time and energy. Contrary to popular belief, reading faster can actually improve comprehension because it enhances focus. A better reader has better focus and comprehension as their brain receives the necessary stimulus.

To boost reading comprehension, there are three techniques known as the three R's: Read, Relate, and Write. First, read the material and work on overcoming subvocalization, which limits your reading speed. Next, relate the material by discussing what you've read with someone else. This helps make the information your own, personalizing and organizing it. Finally, write notes on what you've read. This can be done using a grid system or by capturing information on the left side of the page and creating notes on the right side. These techniques help improve comprehension and understanding of the material being read.
