How to Optimize Cognitive Function & Brain Health | Dr. Mark D'Esposito

Video Overview & Insights

In this episode, my guest is Dr. Mark D'Esposito, M.D., a neurologist and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. We discuss the brain mechanisms underlying cognition and the forms of memory required for focus, productivity, planning and achieving goals, and learning. We discuss neurochemicals such as dopamine and acetylcholine and how they can be leveraged to improve cognitive functioning. We also discuss concussion, traumatic brain injury (TBI), Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease, and ways to restore or slow cognitive decline by using pharmacologic, lifestyle and behavioral protocols. This episode provides a modern understanding of cognition and memory and actionable tools to optimize brain health and function.

It would be amazing if there was a summary somewhere. This stuff is so interesting but I usually don't have time to listen to the whole thing.

Dear Professor, Thank you for bringing subject matter experts to common people. I remain indebted to you for all you do🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💗💗💗

About mindfulness. As a yoga therapist, I had the opportunity to work with 4 ADHD kids . 8 year old’s mother informed me that he can now be still. She thought it was miracle . The mother of 10 year old told me “ all the complains from the student’s teacher “ about her daughter was GONE in less than a months practice .

What did we practice ?

20 mins of Pranayam ( breathwork -8 types ) with affirmations and meditation while sitting still. 5 days a week. After practicing asanas and yog Nidra with BS.

That is the power of breathwork and meditation.

Yog is attainment of “complete concentration”. ADHD is opposite of that .

Thus, I am glad you and Dr. Mark discuss this no cost tool.

And yes it is possible to train an 8 year old ( who used to be all over the place when he started meditation ) to become completely still in a month or 2 of practice 😃

I think that persistant symptoms post TBI can be other things going on at the same time. In my own case, it was lead exposure. I was experienceing a slight decline in cognitive performance prior to the TBI. Once I hit my head, it was game over. Even though there was nothing visible to the doctors, no loss in conciousness (walked into a tree branch), I lost vision, forgot where I was going while drivng, couldn't follow conversations, andit cost me my career. I ended up preparing a DNR because I was not going to continue to live like that. 4 doctors and 6 months later, I found a naturopath that did a complee workup, including heavy metals. After chelation - Bingo. While blue light still bugs me, I can at least function again.

It gave me an empathy for those suffering from stroke, TBI or dementia.

Thanks so much for all the information you provide!

It is simply inexpressible how one could improve their lives because of the knowledge shared absolutely free here. Just want to say thank you! Please, continue doing what you do!
Since started listening to Andrew about a year ago, I have successfully implemented several positive habits, including cold plunge, gym and some sleep tricks ! This podcast has helped me to make up my own protocols\routines, which I can say truly improve the quality of life!

Tiny title piece of request, would be marvellous to see some overview about daily protocols\routines\supplements one can do (you personally do?) , as kind of template for newcomers.
For instance, I have found that adding cardio and plunge before breakfast plus start working after eating, gives me tremendous performance boost, lasting till at least 3-4 pm and simplifies other routines\schedules during the day.

How do you start the day and what benefits might be noticed from it?

Save time and skip to the middle of the interview. The first half is Huberman asking his teacher quirky and irrelevant questions he should have paid more attention to in college. The 'Optimize Cognitive Function & Brain Health' parts are mentioned only briefly, towards the end. But actually, this video only discussed the most banal and commonly know "good nutrition" and "use it or lose it" things about maintaining brain heal. Otherwise - useless!

Rating: 7.2/10
In Short: Cute, Cringe, and Superficial
Notes: This podcast felt a little repetitive to the recent Working memory and attention podcast with the little mechanism and drugs that were mentioned and discussed most, and many topics were only touched on very briefly. At times it felt like Huberman had to explain and often overexplain some of the ideas and topics where Mark then would just end up agreeing and not necessarily adding to the conversation, for example the discussions on Alzheimers, trans magnetic stimulation, or meditation. Then at the End Huberman goes all lovey dovey and tells Mark how great he is, where I feel just due to this convo he's not really deserving of all of that praise. It’s a bit strange at this point in hubermans career to see him sucking up to someone like this who doesn’t give off the power scientist vibes that many of his other guests do. But this podcast is still somewhat light and fun at times and not totally bad, but definitely not one of the best ones. One thing that really stuck out to me was: Huberman on meditation: "The problems in my life, I get a new perspective.'

A full episode dedicated to post concussion syndrome would be great. Three years tomorrow for me and I am still having major issues. My doctor only offers me pain medications which I will not accept. My concussion was from whiplash in a very minor car accident. I do not know what to do anymore to recover from this.
