Level: Easy

Total: 1 hr

Hey Jet! I moved to the middle of nowhere a few years ago and there is no asian food restaurants for many many miles. You have been a lifesaver in showing me how to make my own at home and you really do a great job at teaching. Not sure how you aren't the coach for worst cooks in America... you make things seems so simple and doable for anyone.

— @jacobsmith6215

Active: 20 min

Yield: Makes 2 large or 4 small bowls

I have to make my own so that I don't have to eat anything with nasty star anise in it. That is the most offensive spice on the planet. If I taste it, it goes straight in the trash.

— @llmcoder

Ingredients

Pho Stock:

Only thing is that he didn't char onion and ginger

— @FirebangStrong-qe5bd

2 tablespoons (30 g) beef bouillon or base

1 tablespoon (15 g) Vietnamese fish sauce

Bruh you don’t at least char your veggies and bloom your spices? It takes 5 minutes 😂

— @ryancalderon4559

1 tablespoon (15 g) white sugar

One (2" [5-cm]) piece ginger, sliced into thin tiles

How do I replace the fish sauce

— @JohnSisk-kk7qb

1/2 yellow onion, large dice

Pinch kosher salt

I needed basically everything in the video and it cost me $50.

— @vansyugo1

2 whole cloves

2 whole star anise

6 years later and I finally found this epic recipe I have needed my whole life. I like chef Andy’s tip of burning the onion and ginger too, but this recipe takes a fraction of the time and honestly tastes just as good.

— @huwllewellyn7282

1 cinnamon stick

Assembly:

6:08 Sashay away

— @MusicKnowte

1/2 pound (240 g) thin rice stick noodles, rinsed

1/2 pound (240 g) beef strip loin or fillet, shaved thin

What cut of beef is best ?

— @joeordz

1 cup (240 g) Vietnamese basil leaves

1 cup (240 g) bean sprouts

is good very simple and delicious i will make tomorrow 🤪😃my daughter love 💕 the beef pho 🍜 soup thank you

— @trenttrent9436

1 lime, cut into wedges

Hoisin sauce, for the table

I've made this a few times now, I modified it a little bit, but omg, it's easy to make and taste so good. It's a must try. Thank you Mr. Jet.

Chili sauce, such as Sriracha, for the table

Directions

Who every edited this video forgot to add where the ginger goes.

— @Localmarine1

Special equipment: cheesecloth and butcher's twine for the satchel

For the Pho Stock: Add the beef base and 1 quart water to a 2-quart (1.9-L) saucepan and bring to a low boil. Add the fish sauce, sugar, ginger, onion and salt to the stock and reduce the heat to a simmer. Wrap the cloves, star anise and cinnamon stick in a piece of cheesecloth and tie it into a satchel. Add the satchel to the broth and simmer for at least 30 minutes, but no more than 45 minutes.

Hi. I have made a slightly more traditional pho few times 8-12-16 hrs.; long process & expensive.

So I tried this version. I went to my local Mexican market & asked the butcher to cut my stew meat extra thin. He said, “but, it’s gonna fall apart!” & I said, “That’s what I want! Paper thin 🤣 “

Omg! So good! & so fast! I used Better than Bouillon beef base! Delish! Oh, & I threw out my fish sauce & got a new one 🤣

My kids said it was “my best pho ever”! & they love that it’s done so fast so they could eat right away.

We’re Mexican and I usually make pozole verde for birthdays but recently my kids have been asking for pho instead. 🤣

Thanks for this video. I’ll definitely be making it like this more often.

— @marianamunoz6075

Around the 30 minute mark, taste the broth to see that the spice flavors have been extracted, and adjust seasonings if necessary. Strain the aromatics and satchel from the broth, return to a sauce pot, and reserve for assembly.

For the assembly: Bring the broth back to a simmer. In a separate pot, bring water to a boil. Using a sieve or basket, quickly dip the noodles into the water until they are hot and al dente, 10 to 20 seconds. Drain the excess water from the noodles and distribute the noodles between 4 bowls.

How about a pressure pot ? Is that allowed ? 🫣 because I tried it and (for my taste) it was wonderful

— @anamariagheorghe385

Top each bowl with some sliced beef, basil, bean sprouts, cilantro, jalapeno, scallions and onion, or as each person wishes. Ladle in enough broth to cover the ingredients in the bowl. Garnish with a lime wedge. I like to serve pho with Sriracha and hoisin sauce.

Just put oyster sauce in your soup, don’t add any salt and you have almost any Asian soup…also would you trust a Vietnamese restaurant to cook the soup for a few days? When it comes to Asian anything AFM is the main ingredient “Anything For Money”….

Just made this in south Louisiana. It rivals gumbo. Jet thank you for this. Had a family friend over that her Vietnamese family makes two day Pho and her first question was what bones did I use for the broth hahahahahhaa. I could not wait to tell her. She asked for the broth to bring to the family to taste. Just wow. I did 10 quarts and it fed 15 people easily. Initial cost was more but I will make this for $45 next time and feed 15 or more people. Are you serious. And for one of the best things I ever ate or watched people enjoy?! Thank you Jet. You are my favorite chef hands down. Generous and kind. God bless your beautiful family!!!
