I didn't start with alphabet. I just guessed them by tracking sound and looking at sentences. Because I'm lazy to memorize every single of alphabet.
I felt so overwhelmed when I learned Thai. Because I had to learn the alphabet like for 2 weeks but I still forgot. Learning only alphabet is boring and it might feel overwhelming. So it would be better if you don't wait to read sentences until you get all the alphabet. Reading it out loud and speaking from a little phrases can help you improve and it won't make you feel so overwhelmed.

Another piece of advice: do not EVER rely on Duolingo for anything other than learning the alphabet; not to mention that you can master that independently. It will discourage you beyond measure once you realize that you cannot actually put that knowledge into practical use. I stopped my studies after a 60 day streak, because I am absolutely not gonna maintain a 2000 day streak just to say nonsensical things like, 'My father is not in the butter.' As a matter of fact, do not rely on any language learning apps; the effort expended a very meager amount of actual fluency.
