I was stumped when I replaced my old hinges and a few of the doors wouldn't close properly. I started trying to plane the doors down while they were mounted. That, of course didn't work. I dialed up YouTube (the greatest learning device, ever) and found this video. I was able to fix all the doors in minutes with the first view of pulling the hinge pin/shim door/bend hinge. Thank you!!

The toothpick fix was brilliant! I was getting ready to use wood filler, but this took 5 minutes total and didn't involve removing the door. Thanks.

A thank you! This was bothering us for years! Our front door was rubbing in the middle and was a bugger to open and close. We avoided our own front door because of this. Very helpful 🙏

Good tips but never use a impact on hinges. Use a drill and lessen the torque torque.

@HazyTrailsQuestion for you my door is rubbing at the top left, but my hinges in the right hand side or against the frame and I can’t get behind it. Thank you.
@kennethlong3631I knew about most of the tricks you showed, but using tooth picks to fix a stripped hole is new to me. I'm going to be using that at some point for sure.
@Dane_LatimerOoooo. Thank you. Our pantry closet door was sagging and it annoyed me for so long. I finally asked my husband to remove the pin of the hinge. Used our blood pressure cuff to raise the door and boom. Adjust the hinge and now the door opens smoothly. Thank you for the video and showing us what to do step by step.
@壮々❤ awesome video! Thank you
@jonabarrRecently, I had a dutch door installed and the handyman did not do a good job so instead of having him come back AGAIN! I just used the wood shim and toothpicks and that worked!! Yay!😂
@ashleytran3879Tq very much for the tips how to resolve the door problem...👍👍👍
@hanafisibini9168Finally fixed the door. I just used stacked cardboard pieces as my shim for the bottom of the door since I don’t have that specific tool.
All the screws in the hardware were solid but the door needed to be raised up just a bit. Propped up the door to the level it needed. Unscrewed the door hinge screws (9)
Then screwed everything back in 🤷♂️
Doesn’t seem like it should make a difference but it was a huge improvement
Use thin shims behind the hinges opposite to the problem. I also use thin washers under the hinges on the screws holding the door.
@Mick-u8wThank you! Made it easy for this Nonna in Toronto. 4 boys and 2 grandsons and hubby is sitting on the sofa❤😂
@rosesen1736You got me out of a bind sr😊
@hellainthalffull2884makasih tips nya sangat bermanfaat.gud job👍
@rudisyahputralubis9942This absolute nonsense, I ve been a joiner for 55 years and can tell you the door will become hinge bound if you do this, the first question is why has the door dropped and then you address the problem which usually involves removing the door and top or top 2 hinges and stripping the edge of the door and reinstating the hinges and rehanging the door if it’s a hollow core like the one in the video you may need to strip the latch side as the framing of the door may not be heavy enough to hold the hinge / screws .
@John-k3r1gThank youuuuu so much. So clear and helpful
@wth6588Cause you didn't get the hing side of the door level.Shove the hing side tight against framing and get same gap around and mount it and the the door want drop.
@alanhawkins6913Worked perfectly thanks! Did number two first and worked👍
@lilflo14You should do #2 as #1 my friend just saying check your hinges first homie!
@toddrapp3443Quick Answer: The video from Fix This House shows five practical DIY tricks to fix a sagging or rubbing door that won’t close properly. The methods include tightening hinges, adjusting hinge placement, bending hinge pins, using shims, and employing an inflatable air shim for fine adjustments.
🛠 5 DIY Tips & Tricks to Fix a Sagging Door
1. Tighten Door Hinges
- Loose screws are often the main culprit.
- Use a screwdriver or drill to tighten hinge screws.
- If screws are stripped, replace them with longer ones that reach deeper into the frame.
2. Adjust Hinge Placement
- A door hinge punch tool can help reposition hinges slightly.
- This realigns the door so it sits squarely in the frame.
3. Bend the Hinge Pin
- A crescent wrench can be used to slightly bend hinge pins.
- This adds tension and pulls the door back into alignment.
4. Use Wooden Shims
- Insert a thin wooden shim behind the hinge plate.
- This pushes the hinge outward, correcting the door’s angle.
5. Air Shim Adjustment
- An inflatable air shim (like those used by locksmiths) can lift and reposition the door temporarily.
- This helps you fine-tune alignment before tightening everything down.
✅ Key Takeaways
- Start simple: Always try tightening screws first—it solves most issues.
- Work progressively: If tightening doesn’t work, move to hinge adjustments or shims.
- Tools matter: Specialized tools like hinge punch or air shim make the job easier but aren’t strictly necessary.
- DIY-friendly: All five methods can be done without professional help, saving time and money.
If you’d like, I can also walk you through a step-by-step repair guide tailored to your specific door problem (e.g., rubbing at the top vs. bottom). Would you like me to break down the process into a clear checklist you can follow while working?

If using the air shim pump, do you need to take out the top hinge pin? If you left it in place, wouldn’t the air shim bend the hinge knuckles into the needed direction? I only ask because my hinge knuckles don’t want to budge even with a foot long (more leverage) slip joint pliers.
@j89891Thank you very much. It’s really Works. 👍
@stepanmelnik6934For my door , it was the screws from the plate. So take all screws out and use something to level the door and re screws it.
@fh3486thanks for the info
@mariamanuta8560I found this very helpful! Thanks
@clpnetwork2812Your tips worked great...Thanks
@STEVELOVESMARIAWhy is everyone’s bathroom door the same 🤣
@paddybrady5874this totally fixed my issue!!! thank you
@samsun79Thanks for this video. I was going nuts adjusting the hinges back and forth and nothing was working. I basically discolored my hinges now. But the tip of putting in wood pieces in order to give the screws a tighter fit worked for me!
@toucheyang89I like the bend the hinge idea. Thanks!
@goodairin4446Man I hope this works to bend the hinge a little. The top hits the jam before the rest so it’s not latching
