Some TV dramas use non scouse actor's and it probably sounds genuine to most viewers, but the Merseyside region we can hear the difference immediately, perhaps its a difficult accent to perfect π

Im from The Wirral (over the mersey from liverpool). I have hated the accent since i was born. Most people speak it, because most people arent conscientiousness enough to speak proplely. Its a chavvy, cringy accent. Baffles and saddens me that people dont agree its foul

People didnβt speak like this when I was growing up ( born 1948 in Old Swan ) All this guttural sound was looked down on as we were encouraged to speak nicely with good grammar. We still can be recognised as coming from Liverpool but it seems to be a trend to sound βScouse β but I canβt stand it.

Married a Scouser and when she first came to Australia at 14 yo her school friends (in the 60s) got her to say " bugs bunny" and "great" just to hear her accent. Over many years her accent has mellowed but she can drop back into pure Liverpudlian, especially if speaking to relatives or other Scousers. π

Many english speakers can' t pronounce the german ""ch" obviously the Liverpudlian are able to pronounce it. SOMETIMES IT SOUNDS LIKE DUTCH.

So, no one mentioned the history of Liverpool as a slave trading port city? The African sailors and residents also influenced the 'Scouse' accent. Yes, Black Britains formed the early history of Liverpoolers.

Interesting that you pointed out that Scots have the same /x/ sound (I didn't even know that was the phonetic way to write it), I got interested in Scouse because I heard Esdeekid and it felt familiar because of that sound, but I would call it a ch, because that is how that's written in Dutch words. Now I have a Scottish friend who speaks Doric and he once told me that he could hold half a conversation with someone from FryslΓ’n, which is a province in the Netherlands that has it's own (internationally recognised) language. So to me there is a very interesting overlap happening within cities, provinces and cities that are very dependent on sea traffic. It's pretty cool to actually hear it and realise how the overlap (probably) started.

@Nabukad01Weird that none of these people sound very much like any of the Beatles who were all scousers and native Liverpudlians. I would recognize the Beatles voices anywhere, but none of the people resembled any of the Beatles accents to my foreign ears.

@richatom71what about the "S" pronounciation, that's the thing that stands out the most imo.... it sounds like SH, but apparently not all of them make that sound?

@James-p7f5bGoing to Liverpool for the third time next august... i use to comunicate with american/canadian accent, so i struggle to understand scouse, but everytime I get the chance to improve vocabulary and to know nice and friendly people.
