How to Become a Digital Nomad in Thailand in 2026 - Ultimate Guide (Visa, Banking, Taxes & More)

Video Overview & Insights

In this video I cover the 9 worst mistakes that digital nomads make in Thailand.

Cal, as always your information is the best out there. After my last six months in Thailand I'm going to take the plunge in a few years and take the digital nomad route. It'll take a few years to get my affairs in order but I'm already excited.

The transition to Thailand is as much about the mental system as it is the visa! I’ve found that prioritizing the DTV for a 5-year play is the best way to secure your peace and professional edge. Great breakdown, Cal!

14:45 - The note about Social Security is an important one. For Americans, income that isn’t taxed by the IRS is not going to count towards your Social Security contributions. Your Social Security checks are based on your 30 highest income years. Therefore, the earlier you move abroad, the less you put into Social Security, the less you stand to earn from Social Security in your golden years. You can claim Social Security anywhere, but this can really cripple how much you stand to earn when you retire.

Thailand’s great, but you need the right visa, a clear budget and a plan for the future if you want to stay long term.

My Wife has one of my USAA debit cards; this has worked best for us.

She takes out ~10,000thb (currently ~u$325) and makes sure to NOT use local conversion, which saves us $6/7 per transaction.

Excellent video Cal. Thank you! Lately there been alot of "Thailand is a scam" video in my feed. You touched on some of these same warnings, but with a more realistic point of view. I appreciate that greatly! Keep up the good work! 😊

Its smarter to do a border run than to extend the DTV from within Thailand, too much paperwork and time consuming

Most of the homeless people and beggars in Thailand are Cambodian. They entered the country illegally

I disagree over tax explanation, foreign income is only taxable should you bring foreign income into Thailand. If stayed outside, it will not be taxed.

Great video.

Just FYI, Citibank doesn't exist in Australia any more, they've been merged into NAB, and their no-fee debit card with no fees on international transactions don't exist any more.

There are banks like Macquarie and ING who have similar products, and UP is a digital bank focused on easy overseas transactions.

If I filed a 90d report and then left the country and coming back to stay for another 90+ days, do I need to apply in person again or I could do that online aswell?

Hey Cal, do you recommend a good agency, that can handle the DTV process. I don’t mind paying a bit, to get a good and timely service and timely completion of the entire process 🙏🏻

If you can have 500k (ideally 1M) in a index fund, use the 3% rule and forego external validation when you might have a shot. Digital nomads are just beggers that dont want their vacation to end.

Off Topic Suggestion: Cal, you might have covered this topic in the past. Could you please make a video on some local etiquette recommendations? 1) If you hear Thai national anthem in public, please stand still. 2) Don't point at things with your foot (pointing with index finger is mostly OK if you are not in an argument. The most generically polite way to point at something is with an open palm.) 3) Cover your shoulders in public. A short-sleeve T-shirt is fine. Spaghetti strap in the middle of the city will make you look trashy like prostitutes. 4) If the locals don't hug you first, don't hug them. Just salute by putting your hands flat together at the chest level or just say hi. 5) If you need to blow your nose at the dining table in public, lean downward to one of the sides a little bit while blowing gently into a Kleenex tissue. (It turns people off if you blow your nose at their direction across the table.) 6) Don't touch or tap on other people's head even if it's a cute little kid. Head is considered a significant part of the body for Thai people. 7) Before entering a temple chamber, take your shoes off. 8) Don't spit in public, especially in front of any religious building. It's a sign of insults. 9) Most of the time the service charge is already added to the bill. Tipping is still prevalent in the tourism and accommodation services. When tipping, don't tip with coins, which is cheapish. Tip with at least a bank note. Feel free to add anything else you can think of. Thanks in advance!

Cal, can you talk again about the current status of being able to get short term rentals? you said they are technically supposed to rent short term. I am retiring next year and I would like to spend a significant amount of time in Bangkok as well as visit the rest of the country. However, I am not looking to live there full time. The idea of staying in a hotel for months in a row does not appeal to me as well as the cost seem significantly higher than the apartments. I love your content. Thank you!

@mikesirvivor6107
@

Cal: Love your content. But i seldom watch. Why? Because someone has set your YouTube advertisements at an EXTREME HIGH level. Your channel has too many YouTube advertisements. Each advertisement lasts way too many minutes. 100% of the advertisements have no interest to me. Other Youtube channels have reasonable Youtube advertisements. I can only watch your channel if I can sit attached to the keyboard so I can click thru all the many many many Youtube advertisements. I can't eat lunch and watch your channel. I can't do anything else except sit with my hands attached to the keyboard.

Apparently, there is a way to control the quantity and length of YouTube advertisements because some channels that I watch are much more reasonable when it comes to YouTube advertisements.
