As Spanish, most overrated city on earth. Massificated 9 to 17 worker hole with awful weather (cold as hell in winter), mediocre restaurants and leisure options for the size, more unsafe that the stats say because they are fraud and normally in summer is empty because the nasty heat with no options to take a bath o enjoy that weather. If you want a true Spanish experience, go to medium size cities.

This city is very vibrant and there are many different "Madrids": architecture, generic museums, art museums, international gastronomy, Spanish gastronomy, Spanish regional gastronomy, Madrid at night, live music, monuments, palaces, parks, hiking, Madrid in Christmas, musicals and theatres, alternative spectacles, gay entertainment, coffe shops... I live in the center of the city and I am very active but this city suprises me constantly. I recommend you come many times and enjoy the city slowly and not being in a hurry. And thanks a lot for your compliments.

There's a lot more to Madrid (and Spain) than the VIP experience they showed you here. They just scratched the surface. Honestly, when I travel I don't want to eat where all the wealthy people meet, it's more or less a generic experience. It's very similar all around the world. You are very sheltered, so why get out of LA or NYC? I like to mingle with everyday people and eat where they eat and speak their language, I don't want them speaking to me in English. But, that's just me.
Spain like many other European countries is very regional. Castilla - La Mancha is very different from El Pais Vasco. Andalucía is very different from Galicia. Cataluña is very different from Extremadura. We, in the US are used cookie cutter businesses. You can get the same meal in San Diego than you can in Main. That's not the case in Europe, each region has its character and personality and specialties. The landscapes are different as well, accents and languages are different. Etc.

I went on vacation to Madrid, and for some reason, I felt uneasy about all those historical buildings. I couldn't help but think about the stolen wealth and lives from the Americas that were used to build them. I didn't enjoy watching it at all.
