How Nuclear Power Works
Video Overview & Insights
A detailed breakdown of Nuclear Power, using the AP1000 plant design as our subject model.
T. Folse, a nuclear engineer and someone who has actually worked in nuclear power, is making a reaction series to my work. So much added, high quality detail! Check it out:

Yet again, a new masterpiece. Thanks for the effort, this is outstanding.
MUSIC
I composed the background music
Used nuclear fuel is recyclable into new reactors. The design does need to be different, but it's an engineering challenge, not a physics challenge. For example, France recycles 96% of their used nuclear fuel.

Love this video
SOFTWARE USED
I use Blender 3D to create these models. It's free and open source, and the community is amazing:
Another great video - thank you for all the work you put into this!
Also, a potential video idea: how steel is recycled - that is, melted down and turned into new steel products.

0:00 Overview
Excellent, the most comprehensive video I've ever seen on the subject, very well researched and presented. Thanks 👍🏻
03:57 Nuclear Fuel Handling
05:53 Fission
Is this the only way to generate electricity from uranium?
12:14 Control Rods
17:18 Core Flow and Components
17:11 "Now you've seen how we get the nuclear reaction going" - no, not really. The fuel coming in is mostly inert, you need a neutron source to start the reaction. You just touch on that later on in the video.
20:36 Pressurizer
22:01 Steam Generators
Friday night fun with me, my husband, and Animagraffs. Love it! Thank you!
26:01 Reactor Coolant Pumps
28:00 Containment
PRECISAMOS DELA
29:48 Passive Safety Systems
35:40 Refueling
This is thereputic❤
39:13 Spent Fuel Handling
41:57 Generating Electricity
average humans really can't comprehend the engineering efforts that have come before us. if you told someone that this exists, they wouldn't believe you.
45:44 Conclusions
Wonderful video!
I love your work.
Kindly make a video on how MotoGP bikes work.
We need more like this.
More User Perspectives
This gives a better high level overview of PWRs than most of our new hire training material or any other resource short of reading a 5000
@TheHidden_EngineeringVery informative
@sapphiron21If i remember correctly, finland has a permanent nuclear waste storage at around 400 meters underground near olkiluoto power plant!
@TaaviTirkkonen21:23 at 2200 psi water boils at 650°F, and the liquid density is only 6x the density of the vapor. Not 1600x, this is for atmospheric conditions.
@mackcullison6316517 x 264 x 430 = 17,822,640. Not sure where 16 million comes from but whatever.
@hendu7111Absolutely brilliant (as we have come to expect from you)! It would be awesome if you could cover other notable reactor designs in the future like the infamous RBMK-1000 or CANDU.
@andremuller3497steam engine simulator is getting really complicated with this new update
@trevise684Do CANDU next!
@Fargus990Very informative.
@roberttuss5349OK, but how do an RBMK reactor core explodes?
@rebel_ltzonkalo is a permanent undergrownd storage for nuclear cask, has been finished a year ago
@i3mattiingame584I prefer my power generation byproducts sealed in a cask than in my lungs, thank you.
@thestudentofficial5483I've been falling asleep to this video for 5 days now
@nikolovellI wish you showed how the cooling towers work
@cheesebusinessthis is a masterpiece!
@chyldstudiosAlittle nuclear waste, or 60 years of coal and oil burning... Such a hard decision. All roads lead to boiling water and spinning a turbine still!
@temmujinPhysicist: We just discovered the power of the atom!! how are we going to harness it?
Engineer: just boil some water
Amazing work, I wonder how much it’s different compared to something like VVER1200, they somehow make those within budget and on time, unlike British $50B still not operational thing 😅
I wish we have this or VVER in Poland, but time will tell
this video is amazing, it deserves at least a few million views
@ObviouslyThreeWould love to see an ANIMAGRAFF on the ITER Nuclear Fusion project :D
@diariesofdaveT. Folse calls this the "Best nuclear power plant video I've seen on the internet." That's a glowing accommodation!
@WyFosterThat's it! That's nuclear power! That's just boiling water!
@bassplayer2011ifyI thought the video was talking about Nuclear “Powers” silly me.
@Sniperbestfriend1:22, won't it be around 18 million?
@Sivah_Akash25:48 dry steam? Do you know how ridiculous you sound? 😂
@gorillahumprDoing an equivalent video on research reactors like OPAL reactors which focus on the non-heat uses like neutron guides, and long residence irradiation would be great.
@dittilioAmaze! Amaze! Amaze! :)
@WyoVinnyWell, one could argue that not embracing nuclear power could be equally risky humanity if a true solution to climate change isn't found. Time is quickly running out.
@TheFEDFEDFEDFEDNext please how a nuclear missile warhead works. There are lot of videos about how the nuclear device work in a gun type assembly but they don't show how they miniaturized and put it on missiles.
@bossforthewinCrazy to think that they could make something as complex and then shrink (and simplify) it down enough to fit on a ship or submarine for 20 year cycles. I think they only refuel subs once in their 40 year lifespan and new ones will just be fueled once and then run until they scrap it.
@christophercharles9645There are several problems with nuclear because radioactive material is super expensive and then you have to store it. It’s super dangerous. It’s not worth what we get out of it. You would be better off tapping into ground temperatures where it’s cool and thermal areas near lava or hot springs all those volcanoes could make steam look at Kilauea all the power none of it used.
@anonymous-tn6ijWhere did the get the number 16 million is needed versus some other number?
@fs3579Someone should ask Elon if he wants to launch all this nuclear waste into the sun...sounds like something crazy enough that he'd entertain.
@obscurity3027"The amount of effort and detail put into these 3D animations is absolutely mind-blowing. This is by far the best visual explanation of how a nuclear power plant works that I've ever seen. Amazing job!"
@TheMotorMatrix-g2tAwesome..!!!!
@A121ESAs somebody who worked at Braidwood Generating Station (Westinghouse 4 loop PWR) as an electrical engineer for several years, you did an excellent job of describing, or at least mentioning, many of the sub systems required in nuclear power. Well done!!
