How Netflix Avatar Wastes Your Time: A Scene Comparison

I've never watch the original ATLA. I know it and watch a glimpse of short video but never watch even a full episode of it before. Now as a 1st timer viewer of the AVATAR series, the Netflix version is what my first watched series, I'd says it's pretty good. It makes me want to watch the next episode until finish all of them. I've watched the full 1st and 2nd season of it but now the episode of 2nd season ended without fully end the whole series storyline. That's what make me want to watch the original version soon so I can be satisfied to watch until the end of the story. 😂

I avoided this show for so long but now I started watching it out of curiosity. I just finished season 2 and at first I was kinda conflicted about everything starting from episode 1 season 1. When I saw the omashu episode I was so mad I had to vent to someone else because they changed a lot of the story. I believe the problem is trying to fit all episodes inside one in order to move along, especially in some episodes you can see this and in order to put more mini stories inside one they had to change and badly mix everything up. After the omashu episode I calmed down and kinda surrendered to look at it as an alternate universe from the legend of aang kinda like the multiverse in the superhero comics. It has its moments the conquest of ba sing se is very underwhelming compared to the original material but hey, at least is something new, it feels like watching it for the first time again... Almost. You can tell the writers do not want to follow the original story fully and to be honest if you just accept it, it's not too bad, at least we don't have the sjw treatment that a lot of adaptations are getting in these years and I'm down for that.

dude, the swamp was such an important and pivotal episode in ATLA, i can't believe they didn't include it

Costs money to use more camera angles, more scenes, locations etc. Barely costs any money to do it in the anime

I don't know. I thought it was pretty cool. I think if you want to watch the series you originally watched.. you should just watch that. I haven't watched the original. But for me? With no knowledge? Was pretty damn cool. But no matter what they do.. it will never be the original. And this pseudo intellectual outrage is a little pedantic on some points, fair on others but always comes across as hater whining. The original was the original by the crew in place on that production. So you kind of doomed yourself from the rip waiting for that. But carry on. You can hate something into cancellation so there's no Airbender eventually for anyone and no room for them to improve.

Brother. BROTHER. Come on. This is the most obvious case of "new thing bad" I have ever seen.
Like, I can understand wanting to make your video while the ideas are still fresh, but you could have recorded the video, and gone back to finish the season.
Like, with writing and editing, this absolutely took longer than finishing the season would have.
And to be clear, yes, I believe the Original show is better in every possible way. But can we have some intellectual honesty? 'Zuko is more harsh, and it just doesn't work' Doesn't work... How?? It's truly just a hollow gripe, with no meaning.

The animation is a masterpiece. The live action is an entertaining tribute

They could still turn this show great by making the gAANG leave ember island theatre at the end of the last season's last episode

Keep in mind that almost all remakes suck hard. Has Disney ever remade any cartoon at the same level? Not. Even. Close. I expected so much worse and this is good because people who I never could get to see the children's cartoon are invested in this; therefore, it is good.

The two shows have about the same total screen time. Shows how poor things are paced for "adults" but also kids will pay attention for 20min while streaming an hour apparently assumes you are multitasking and now paying full attention. Darkness is because it HIDES flaws! also bad taste. There is NO NEED to drag it out; so why other than production cost?

I'm not even surprised that they ruined Toph. I can't think of a single character not ruined in season 1, so why not add one of the best characters onto that pile?

I am now convinced that Avatar should simply never be live action. Part of the reason it works is because of the physics defying nature of animation. Even when the live action does something well, it’s inferior to the original because it just doesn’t feel right. The cartoon feels more realistic than the live action

Very well put. Indulging is possibly the term I've been missing when wondering why the pacing is off in live action remakes, not just this one. I saw another video about how the 20+ episodes per season, 20min per episode format was better than the 8 1hr episode format, and this seems to be a big factor

It's a little mind-boggling how not a single clip of this adaptation that I've ever seen looks believable or immersive in any way. It's all people playing dress-up on a stage.

We already have perfection with the animated series. I’m thankful to have the live action series.

I think certain fans want a play by play copy of the animated series. That would also be boring. The originality of the Netflix series is refreshing. I liked the show. It doesn’t deserve this kind of slide by slide critique.

Ironically one of the few times a female character is supposed to absolutely dominate a physically imposing male character without a drop of irony or cynicism, and they drag it out.

My 11 year old daughter likes the live action show. I'm guessing the show is made for children not us 30 yr olds who are obsessed with a cartoon we watched 20 years ago as children.

I'll never understand why adults want to see shot-for-shot remakes of their favorite cartoon.

Weeellll, this is a good reality check. I love the original and have seen it multiple times, but I was just taking the Netflix version at face value. I already thought that they had dumbed it down and assassinated some of the characters, but I was still enjoying it. Maybe not so much any more..? I don’t know, it’s still very nostalgic, and I look forward to seeing how they adapt every arch of the story, even if it’s not 100% faithful. Something tells me that the last season will be most disappointing though.

Why are all the characters' faces so round?

Every scene with the Mechanist (who I swear wasn’t even in this goddamn season in the original, though it’s been a while since I saw the original) is SO drawn out and is just.. talking..

I mentioned the tunnel plan to my wife and she made the comment that the Fire Nation is really good separating their prisoners with their bending element. The Water benders in book 3 where in a wood prison and bound when feeding them. The Earth benders were put on a metal platform in the middle of the ocean. It is insane anyone from the fire nation would think tunneling under the wall is a good idea.

100% they forgot about sand lore because it makes no sense for earth benders to be fighting on a sand stage. Wow that makes it even worse good catch

I CANNOT get over how in the first episode of the 2nd season they had TWO people, Sokka and Aang, do the cool guy "punching the guy behind me with the back of my hand without looking" trope in different scenes WITHIN FIVE MINUTES OF EACH OTHER. I couldn't watch anymore after that it pissed me off so much

I don’t understand why they couldn’t just make a 1 for 1 reshoot as live action. The episodes don’t need to be an hour long. Just stick to the format. If you’re gonna change things, hire competent writers and age up the cast so you don’t have to rely on the performances of child actors (no offense to them but my god some of the performances are not good). This franchise can very easily get away with simple fan service and print money.

Another problem with the scene, Netflix wanted to change the setting but couldn't commit to the change. All the posturing and trash talk before the fight was meant to fit the over the top WWE style setting that the original was in. Netflix downscaled to something that no longer resembled a wrestling ring, but they didn't take out any of the wrestling references. Well, except for all the characters they removed.

You just KNOW they are going to milk the hell out of "That's rough, buddy" next season

I think it's more like "we spent too much money putting this scenario for the fight, it can't be 30s, make it at least 3-4min!"

They tried to fix a thing that wasn't broken. I can see why the original creators backed out of the live action adaptation. I wish this adaption was just as good as the One piece live action, but I guess that's too much to ask from Netflix.

What a spectacular waste of money, not surprised this show sucks and I have no clue why this even exists when the original show is just great on it’s own

The 2005 show is a lightning in a bottle for me especially with everything that comes afterwards.
