Funny enough, when I went to college I was torn between becoming a software engineer, or going into the medical field. I chose the medical field and as a PRN NP, I make right around the same amount that you do.

What the hell with those US salaries? Almost 11k per month as base pay + bonuses for a junior dev? Thats absurd

btw, Amazon only matches based on the comp you get each pay period, so front loading won't get you the full year's 2%, just 2% of that month's pay. At the end of the year they'll calculate a "true-up" match which will give you the full match in the end, but only if you stay until the end of the year...also assuming you stay 3 years so it vests...

regardless it's the most dogshit 401k match I've ever seen, so front loading is still probably optimal because lump sum is usually better than DCA.

Not trying to be rude; but companies like Amazon paying their employees that much, is the reason why they lay off everyday, you are getting paid almost as much as a doctor… that’s unfair. Ironically you people build AI to replace yourselves 🥱😁

That’s a lot of money for a new graduate—$130K with no experience whatsoever, plus RSUs on top of that. If you’re not in big tech, you usually need around 10 years of experience to make that kind of salary.

I see many new graduates from good universities with 4.0 GPAs who have no idea what they’re doing outside of LeetCode. They don’t want to do on-call support, they can’t figure things out on their own, and they don’t understand how the business works. They just look at code blocks without understanding how the system is designed or how it integrates with other systems.

Big tech is spoiling these fresh graduates with crazy salaries, and anyone who can do decently on LeetCode can pass the interviews. It’s so stupid.

and a software engineer? YIKES! $50,000 singing bonus? Your might learn that you sold your KARMA to the devil for 50K.
I am also grateful to have my job-as a Nurse. I get to help and heal AND get paid for it. :)

Dropping your money in 401k is still take home money, it’s your decision to do that with your take home money.

seeing someone say they earn 10k per month just blows me away, i worked a few jobs and they payed me 800 euros, and i had to work 6 days a week something staying in the store till 11pm and doing everything

@akiraKunnnn
@

Why are you front loading maxing out your 401k in the beginning of the year? Why not just spread out your 401k contributions throughout the year? This way you can still max out your pre-tax contributions before the end of the year?

To put Seattle's housing crisis into clarity here: you pay MORE than I do for rent. Your apartment is about 1/3rd the size of my HOUSE, amd im less than an hour away from downtown Seattle. Thats actually insane.

@nickhoffman9256

401k is a scam. It is generally invested in stocks like sp500 and making about 10% annually and barely beating inflation. It’s like running around in circle. I am better off investing in growth stocks making 30% annually and buying precious metals which can rocket depending on whatever is going on. People investing in 401k are losing money to be honest.

Wow it is so refreshing to see other professions pay transparency. I need to max out of my 401k. Im a nurse in CA making around $250-260k. The taxes in CA is so high, I only keep 60% of my pay. Doesnt sound that much if you factor all that in!

Random algorithm sent me here. But so impressed with your strategy. My husband and I just retired, but we took a very similar approach to you early in our careers. We called it the “pay yourself first” plan. By maximizing early on the savings they had time compound over time. And compounding is everything (if you have the luxury of not touching it until retirement). But ALWAYS accept employers matching contributions for savings- you understand rightly that this is free money.
Can I suggest, your next personal goal- become a cooking ninja. (I know you know). But this will save you hundreds of thousands over your career. Let’s face it, even going for coffee every day has become ridiculously expensive. There are lots of easy cooking video’s on YouTube to follow for healthy and easy meals. But it does take planning and a commitment to spending time on the w/e to have your breakfast, lunch, and suppers ready for your upcoming week. (I always do Asian inspired a lot because many spices, sauces etc are used consistently across recipes, and many are fast, easy (not technically challenging), and full of flavour), not to mention healthy. And given your ethnic background, probably your mom or dad have some amazing family recipes to share.
Anyway- GREAT JOB!! This is a heavy lift so early in your career life, but you are quick-starting the savings with a huge down payment here and it WILL matter over time.

honestly smart. if I got a 50+K sign on I would have done exactly the same with my 401K. you can easily live on 50k a year if you're smart with your money. and it's only a year, after that have at it.

@owenzmortgage8273

Highly appreciate the transparency. And it's quite interesting. While countries in Europe often boast themselves for paying a little less but having great benefits, I find that this is not the reality beyond legislated mandatory social benefits (which, don't get me wrong, are absolutely great and the US just really sucks in that area). For example, my transportation costs by public transport are not covered. My salary before taxes is 130k CHF, so not much higher than what you're earning... as a senior software engineer in a team-lead position in Switzerland, mind you without any stock units. And this is the country with the highest average salaries in Europe. Now, I wouldn't want to work in the US but it does make you think sometimes...

@Umweltliteratur

Why so much in pre-tax 401k? I imagine you've done your research, but for most young folks, roth is preferred
