How James Hetfield Gets The Modern Metallica Guitar Tone! [Part 2 of 3]
Video Overview & Insights
Part 2 of 3! THIS is your quick start guide on How James Hetfield Gets His Iconic Metallica Guitar Tone - and how you can too!
Very interesting!!! Nice video man!!!
šµ PART 2: 2003āPresent Day | From St. Anger to 72 Seasons and beyond.
š Watch Part 1 here!
thx for your video. i really like his tone on 72 seasons and Hardwired. yes, master of Puppets rules but i can't unhear the limitations of the tape theyre recording to, just like all albums of the time. even black album, we're listening to the somewhat shitty format by todays standards of those sony tape machines. not to mention the master on that album was historically messed up and they had to use DAt backups...so at least now, you get to hear his sound without all of the extra stuff in the way and takes away which I think takes away all the impact and fidelity and thump from his tone. its a better reference for me when im dialing in my guitars

James Hetfieldās rhythm tone continues to define an entire generation of heavy music - and in Part 2 of this deep dive, Iām breaking down exactly how that sound evolved between 2003 and present day 2025. From the raw genre bending back-to-the-garage feel of St. Anger, to their current evolution which continues to draw inspiration from their thrash roots while still carving out something new - this video explores the gear, the technique, and the mindset that made it all iconic.
Lowkey, I think Metallica have never sounded as aggressive and as heavy since the black album. Since St. Anger, they have been getting less and less heavy in my opinion.
In 72 seasons, the pick attack is so smooth that it doesnāt even chug.
š Part 3 Coming Soon!:
Subscribe to catch Part 3, where I'll put it all together using the gear I've got and we'll see how close I can get!
This tone is a part of the entirety that made me quit being a lifelong Metallica fan. It lacks clarity, crunchiness, sounds straight up awful.

@metallica
Metallica playing using AxeFX for their sounds is a Metallica selling their musical souls to go 'through the motions'. It's a Metallica that is NOT Metallica.
@mesaboogie
@marshall
You have got to be kidding me. His tone sucks now. Not even in the same league as his now classic 80s tones, which were completely different and unique(and awesome) from each other on each album. The Black Album was the last time he had a really good guitar tone.
@gibsonguitar
@gibson
I got a 20 watt JCM800 and using just that and a tube screamer with my snakebyte guitar I can get 90% of the way there :)

For downpicking, what works for me is to first practice a lot of punk rock that utilizes a lot of downpicking. Ramones, and Misfits would be good examples. Then, practice Paranoid by Black Sabbath.
Then try For Whom The Bell Tolls, and work your way up.
@UniversalAudio
@rolandglobal
Saying his tone gets better after the black album is pure fan copium. Metallica sonically peaked during their run up to the black album, and especially on that album with bob rock. No one wants to sound like 72 season lmao. Clown album
@fractalaudiosystems
@NeuralDSP
His live tone with the fractal is really good. Except, I noticed that it doesnāt nail the clean tone. Itās pretty close but when he was using the Roland with a Triaxis I believe it was HUGE
šCHAPTERS:
00:00 - Intro
I love the white fang but I feel like they shred instantly. do you guys have the same problem? Jazz 3 last forever but definitely donāt sound as full.
00:57 - Thank you for watching! / Part 1 additional details
03:11 - Picking technique & picks
I haven't liked his tone since the Load era. Just has a muddy sound to it. Sounds like when I forget to switch from neck to bridge pick-up.

Great video! šš»
10:38 - The heavy /distorted amplifiers
13:01 - The role of amp profilers / amp sims
Dude i owned a Mesa Boogie Mark V 90w with a 2x12 Mesa Traditional Cab with Vintage 30ās and got very close to Hetfields tone, yes you do need a 4x12 with v30ās, but i got closer to Hetfields tone with a 2x12 because where i live my landlord told me that i could use a 2x12 cabinet instead of a 4x12 because of how loud it is 2x12 was enough for me i even have video proof of the exact Hetfield tone that i dialed in just 3 years ago, i also have an i-rig for Tonex & Amplitube because of the fact i have Mesa Boogie, Diezel and Roland JC-120, so with that being said you can use either cabinet
14:15 - Clean amps and cabinets + speakers
15:10 - Effects
Even though Iām not a huge Metallica guy, Iām loving this mini series! Itās super insightful.
16:10 - Recording signal chain
19:50 - How Rob Trujillo's bass playing impacts his layering and tone
saw the may 11th show in columbus. Their live recordings don't do any justice to what it feels like to actually see them in person. the guitars smack you in the chest and sound awesome. thanks for these videos,subbed!
21:00 - Putting it all together
25:15 - Final thoughts / Outro
death magnetic isn't as bad if you listen to the guitar hero stems. cool vids, keep it up.
š¬ Let's chat:
ā¢What do you think about the current era of James Hetfield's tone??
Thank you thank you, i just needed somewhere to start. I'm one of those girls who got sucked into the daisy rock jus strum some chords world when all i wanted to do was play metallica songs. I'm late but I'm beginning my tone hunt now, excited for the next part!
ā¢Are you trying to recreate his sound with amp sims, real amps, or something in-between?
ā¢What other tones should I break down next?
Flemming Rasmussen revealed that they slowed down the tracks so hetfield could sound tighter when sped up!! I was crushed... my hero cheated... slowing the songs down is like a baseball player using steroids
Drop it all in the comments, I read every one!
š Stuff in the video:
Really need to talk about how much gain to use live vs studio when layering guitars. I think most guitar players know your live tone and studio tone are two different animals but be good to go over that for younger people.

If you haven't tried the tortex sharps try em. I like the 1.35mm live but use the .88mm sharps in the studio.

After the black album they have went down hill so bad everything sucks ass in my opinion. How cares how good the tone it it he can't make music like he had before . His mesa boogie tone was the best of sounding to me .

Hey there! I'm Brad Dollar and I love making music with people.
Outstanding video man! I'm wondering how they get the Axe Fx 3 to sound so true to their tone.
My goal: Help as many people as possible elevate their process, their music and their relationships with listeners worldwide.
Thanks so much for watching! Seriously, it means a ton.
More likely a t75 or mesa black speaker but im sure yoy can get close with v30 as well. Good job with the video.

I was at the back to the beginning show and my god his tone was insane. I should have talked to him but was shy lol.
@snapascrewHonestly have thought the tone got less metal. Sounds muddy, less gain.
@amirnakhai5273Their current tone is š©
@MrCamel2humpsHonestly who cares. Get your own tone. Everything sounds different. Make youāre own way
@alanhunter4564What's with that AI slop Sponsored Ad, mate?
An ad using a video of Papa Het that's been overdubbed with a fake rendition of his voice selling some product that's clearly not actually endorsed by the man is pretty damn dodgy.
I know itās all subjective but, to me Jamesā pinnacle of tone was the black album.
@greendayraydude i still got my blackfang pick from when i started my guitar journey more then 15 years ago... where would we all be without our creative influences. i dont know
@BataraKadoPapaHet got a new tatt?? š¤ 0:39
@issacrodriguez91Iāve always wanted the Metallica sound, but blending amps has always discouraged me.
@VSMCrossHairFor as incredible Hetfield is and indeed there will NEVER be another one like him....he is no tone monster at all. He has been all over the place tone wise.
Kill Em All - You use what you have so no big deal
RTL - Ok, starting to develop a "tone" or signature sound
MoP - Hooooooly Shiiiiiit! Yes! \m/
AJFA - Cool but jesus....scoop much?
Black - Incredible, down right incredible! \m/
Load/Reload - Absolutely phenomenal, thick, tight, and very articulate, lots of weight! One of the best tones ever IMO!
Garage Inc. - Load/Reload'esque so once again phenominal!
St. Shit - Patheticly bad!
DM - Laughably pathetic! Loudness wars anyone?
HWTSD - Ok, head out of ass and getting somewhere again. Pretty good!
72S - Again, very much HWTSD but a little annoying mid range, case in point in the song 72S when he is peddling the A string, goddamn it's ear gratingly annoying. Live? His problem is likely the fact he keeps chasing tone which at this point is silly considering he has had incredible tone/s in the past.
Owning a original VH4 first model ( like Adam Jones ) I have to say I NEVER found a plugin or modeler that came close to the real deal. the low-end always sounds really off. the real amp has a growl but tightness in the low that digitally, it can't bring out, it's always either too muddy or just not there like a too aggressive lowcut. I still play plugins a modellers constantly, so no hate there, just the fact that the VH4 has never been matched.
@AlexisGitarreIām not trying to be āthat guyā on the comments who is the negative guy lol but Iām not the biggest fan of Jamesā tone since 1991. St. Anger sounded really thin, Death Magnetic thru 72 Seasons all have a more stoner rock tone as opposed to a heavy sound. Just feels like his modern tone is lacking gain somewhere. I love their new songs though. The albums are terrific, just wish James would thicken his guitar sound a bit more. Great video here dude. š¤
@mattwatts33EMG into early 90s rectifier with same era mesa 4x 12. nothing else needed, no overdrives f@@k impulse responses and all that.
miced with an old version of sennheiser 421. That is plug and play and just use all the time saved to write songs. Obsessing over gear is idiotic.
They werenāt invadersā¦.they were āthe MAGā pickups
@rupert916I have been playing guitar since 1987 and one of the dumbest things I have ever heard is: "To get XXXX artists tone is to use what they were using." The reality is that two guys can sound identical but use totally different gear.
Hetfield's tone is simple, it's just a heavy chug tone (high gain w/scooped mids). Some guys like Hetfield need high output pups with loads of gain to get there. Some guys can use lower output pups with less gain and accomplish the same tone. The key to it is your pick attack. Quite frankly, Hetfield's pick attack is weak. This is why he uses the gear he does. When I say weak, I mean that he attacks the strings closer to the bridge. When this is your style, you need help....gear to compensate. If you are a player who attacks the strings further from the bridge then you most likely would use different gear.....lower output pickups and lower gain. This is because when the strings are attacked further toward the neck, the string gets more energy when picked. I personally fall in camp 2 here. If I were to use Hetfield's rig, I would sound like a muddy mess. I can get a very Hetfield type tone by using a Les Paul through a boosted Marshall. So, the internet myth that tone is not in your hands is total BS.
I actually hate the live Metallica sound these days. Itās like this thick, muddy sound. Thereās no crunch or bite to the sound. If that makes sense.
@zachtaylor5312Itās the doubling and the quadrupling that gives his recorded sound
@CaribSurfKing1Guy James doesn't use vintage 30s in the early years he used g12 /75 and as of recently he is using Eminence Speakers... where did you come up with the Vintage 30s LOL vintage 30s are such a poser non sound educated choice they do get good sound but they are the stereotypical standard nowadays
@matthewhowe1098For 72 Seasons, Het mostly used the Jose Aredondo modified Marshall, sounds ACDC hard rock
@gianwinterslive they use axe fxs and a a kloan overdrive
