The artist hybrid model is the move but the part most people skip is the staying paid part. Getting your first check is motivation. Keeping checks coming is a system. Distribution, sync, merch, live shows, brand deals. The artists who build all five of those revenue streams are the ones who never go back to a day job. One income source is a hobby. Five is a business.

Always remember funds come at a 3 month delay. And that its more like a rag you can ring out, as opposed to a "stream" of revenue. The trickle plays wont save your wallet, but one big single or cover might make some significant bank. If you get a music check, do not waste it. Put it straight back into maintaining your indie distribution, if possible. It's more of a safe bet than actual gambling, but just like a gambler, you might not win again. Keep it.

The royalties from streaming are only part of the royalties generated on each song play. There is also radio royalties, song writer royalties and such.
While this is still only 1 pillar in the new landscape if we could get all our money easily that would be a big help
