Motivation, time, and the ability to notice are all key to language learning. In this video, I share how I use LingQ to make the most of all three.

A note on the ability to notice:

I am studying japanese now (English native, thai second language). At around 100 hours of ci input (at level no subtitles) I now notice words in native content (that I still watch with english subs) I either hear them before I read the sub and am expecting to see them in the subtitles, or I see them in the subtitle and am queued to hear them in the audio. I have also become much more aware when the subtitles are paraphrasing or explaining intent instead of translating.

It doesn't take long with a language before you start actively noticing things, the key is you have to be actively engaged in the content.

So I think people ask this question of you hoping to hear the routine. At 4:08 , I’m hearing you say you use it to learn interesting things.

But this doesn’t really tell us the routine, right?

Do you listen to a lesson and try to follow. Then go back and go word by word reading and linking words to terms?

📺 WATCH NEXT:

I just started LingQ yesterday for learning (more) Levantine Arabic, and one gripe I have which I think hinders the learner from writing and reading properly is the fact that ق is replaced by ئ (for example the word وقت is in written as وئت in LingQ). I know this doesn’t hinder speaking, but it does give an improper way of actually reading and writing the word correctly, rather than just pronouncing it softly while still reading the correct spelling.

What I really don't understand is: Why are all of the translations crowdsourced? Why doesn't LingQ have a dictionary?
I click on a word and half of the translations are either spelled wrong or outright wrongly translated. It's really time-consuming to have to look up all of the translations myself and then type them in for almost every word.
Why not have your own integrated dictionary? I'm sure you wouldn't have to develop it all yourself, there are surely other companies that you can work with together.

Hi Steve, In one of your older videos you mentioned how you use tools like Teach Yourself when starting a new language. At what point do you shift from those tools to Linq (podcasts, etc..). Thanks so much!

LingQ is a great tool for language learning, but I always felt something was missing when it came to refining my understanding and making sure my sentences sounded natural. I kept running into phrases that didn’t quite translate correctly until at the end of 2024 when I discovered BeLikeNative. It translates across 80+ languages, but what really made a difference was how it helped me break down complex sentences, compare translations, and truly grasp how native speakers express ideas. Using it alongside LingQ took my learning to the next level, making it easier to improve fluency and confidence in any language!

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT BUY LINGQ

Hello Steve, I bought LingQ 4 months ago. I have had endless problems since the first day I bought the app. I want to write you about some of the problems I have experienced. Because today, an employee named Zoran did something terrible to me.

Some of the problems I have been experiencing all the time

I can't paste a word into the dictionary the first time, I have to try 2-3 times

Importing problems are constantly happening. It takes too long to import a pdf into the app.

When I exit the app, the yellow words turn blue. When I open and enter the app, the Turkish equivalents of the words I enter disappear.

Some words are automatically moved to the known.

I have problems combining multiple words. For example, I can't add a phrasal verb and save it as a sentence. The app allows me to convert one into a sentence, but not the others.

The app also suddenly switches to another language, such as French, while reading.

Sometimes if you delete the apps and reinstall them, most apps will fix it. LingQ never fixes it. Not only does it not fix itself, but the meanings of the words are erased.

Let's say I enter 100 words in a day. The meanings of 25 of them are lost. You put in an incredible amount of effort. Your efforts are wasted. Then you do it all over again. It's very frustrating. I've experienced this many times. Despite sending screenshots and videos from my phone, nothing was done.

Despite reporting this and many other problems for months, they didn't do anything. They never responded or gave an answer about the problem. I have very serious doubts about the competence of these guys. If you browse the forum a little, you'll see a lot of complaints.

Today, February 26.02.25 I sent an email and reported my problems. I asked for my money back if it wasn't fixed. The authorized people who never wanted to explain the problems and never responded responded at the speed of light and said let's refund the money right away. This seemed very interesting to me. It was as if they wanted me to leave.  Normally, a company employee tries to convince the customer and solve the problem.

In the next email I sent, I gave up on the refund because I put a lot of effort into lingq but I would not use it again when my premium period ended, but they closed my account on their own without asking me. This was done on purpose. With what right do they close my account? Without my permission. Is it professional to fire a customer, how can this be done?

Steve, please respond. Instead of deleting what I wrote, you can respond like civilized people. As long as you do not treat me as a human being and do not respond, I will write on all platforms.

I know that Steve has no control over this, but YouTube seems to have been increasing the frequency of ads in his videos, probably in all videos. Yesterday as I was driving where I couldn't look down to my phone to skip commercials, I had to go through 3 sets of ads in a 10 minute video. Will keep listening, though.

Great video, also you can get great language audio input here on youtube with bilingual stories, they will read a sentence of a story in English then read the same sentence in target language. Polyglot Beats on youtube does that well for multiple languages and there other channels for specific languages... its been helping me get passive listening and learning when going on walks... time is by FAR hardest obstacle in language learning - anything that can get us some passive learning is a plus 😊

How many languages that speak fluently

What if I come across some words in a movie or podcast and I dont fully understand them? How can I get in into them more times? Cause happens to me that I take so long sometimes to see a word again and lose that momentum of finally get the word clicked in my brain. By the times I come across them again, it’s like the process restarts and don’t take that word to a final stage of understanding

What do u think about this

If I spend 1hour or more I can reach peak fluency
I wanna speak faster I have everything vocab grammar pronunciation except speed
With my base fluency I'm 0.5 but with my peak performance I'm at 0.75 compared to Mr beast
I wanna speak faster. we've talked about base fluency and peak fluency or performance when it comes to speaking english. im on my base fluency right now. if i reach my peak i can get close to veronika mark but it's nowhere near to mr beast. what do u suggest should i first get my flow and reach my peak performance and then practice speaking or just do speaking from the base fluency. All people think if u just practice every day you will magicly become fluent I think it doesn't work like that. Most people just do an hour speaking session or 2 hour in two days or 5 hours in a week in their target language which is not enough . Fluency flactuates. I think we should count as practice after the peak moment. What's the point if your fluency resets each time. What I'm trying to say is it's better to do speaking after that peak and hold that high peak for 2 to 4 hours to see improvement.

Hello Mr. Kaufmann, I'd like to ask you a question about how to learn a new language, I'm using LingQ for learning to understand the english language and it has been working but I'd like to have some advice about how to learn a new verb tense, I did learn to understand the present simple but I need to learn past and future simple, among others ones.

@JoseBermúdez-u4w

I have been using the free version for a while. I do like it very much, but I have been putting off buying the premium version because it has one key failing (which, tbf, Duolingo also has): it does not give the gender of nouns. As a native English speaker, I find the whole concept of things having a gender so completely absurd that my mind does not want to learn them, but it is obviously essential in many languages, so it is surprising and somewhat annoying not to be given that info.
As usual, I really appreciate your excellent videos, which always have useful advice. I love the idea of "my learning space". That is what I am beginning to discover, and it is fun.
I would definitely like to see more like this. And thank you.

Great adice, as always. Thank you! I listen to stories In Spanish etc. on LingQ every day for 30 minutes when I am at the gym. But I don't use any of the other features. After I had been using LingQ for just a little while I found the vocabulary feature with the yellow and blue highlighted words became annoying, For one thing, the number of unknown words in my list quickly became overwhelming and unmanageable. As a result I found reviewing them a chore. I wasn't learning them because there were just too many and this made me feel defeated. I stopped highlighting unknown words and now LingQ thinks I gave a working vocabulary of 5000+ words which is not true. What I tend t do is look uo the meaning if unknown words as I read but only times when I am totally lost as to the exact meaning of the sentence. If I get the general gist of it, I generally don't bother. The problem is, I am not keeping trac of new word to learn wither within the app or elsewhere. At the gym it is not practical to write them in a list and after I am done at the gym I don;t usually have the opportunity to review them with the result that they usually get lost. I do re-listen to the dame stories over and over again which helps but this doesn't provide a very systematic way of remembering new words. Any thought s on this, Steve (or anyone)?
