Adam has been open about his experience with hearing loss and why it’s important to start destigmatizing hearing loss. Jabra Enhance–the makers of his hearing aids–reached out because they also think this is a conversation worth having, and wanted to share how hearing aid technology has improved in recent years. So Adam visited Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where Jabra Enhance has partnered with researchers to study the science of human hearing and how we process sound.

What a brilliant demonstration model.. I have bad hearing for people that mumble and too vain to wear a BTE that we get free in the UK. I have an idea for a better design.......

Keep in mind that they make earpods, headphones & yes hearing aids that not only track you & record what you say but they can also read your brainwaves with certain models of these things. Protect your privacy & freedom folks. Tech is great but it can also be super scary when in the wrong hands.

The VA got me the Sonova Phonak Audeo I90 hearing aids but I can't stand the block behind my ear so I never use them. I would like to sell them and get in ear models

Next video should be “3AM ANECHOIC CHAMBER CHALLENGE 🤯🤯 GONE WRONG!!!”

I'm listening and watching this video. Somehow my brain is working to coordinate all of the data, waves, lights, and information. I wish we knew more, so much more. Too bad it is impossible to know it, since we are attempting to know something that can not possibly be completely understood.

Really interesting video. I’ll finally go and get my hearing checked 😊

Being a musician, I would absolutely love to spend some time with those sound chambers to create some crazy otherworldly sound effects 🛸

Been using hearing aids since I was a child. Even though I'm not wearing them assiduously, only when I actually want to listen to something (the world, music, youtube, etc.), I liked this video. And a longtime desire of mine is to be able to choose an actual pleasant color for my hearing aids. I've had enough of those dreary colours: skin tones or elderly hair tones. But without having to buy kids' hearing aids (which usually have a battery lock).

Dangit, I wanna have bright blue hearing aids!

I want to get myself cheaked out. I had a bike tire explode in my face about 10 years ago and my hearing has never been the same

Very very interesting! When you were discussing Hearing Fatigue, I immediately flashed back to my early weeks living in Paris, back in '82; I would get overwhelmed and exhausted from having to continually translate French to English, think of my response, translate that to French, and start again. Headaches every night! It took about 3 months for me to totally acclimate to hearing and speaking only in French, but then the headaches disappeared, and I remember how even my dreams were in French! Cool video, Adam!!

14:04 Blerg... crowd noise. My dad and me have perfectly fine hearing in most environments, but crowd noise like that really messes up our ability to comprehend people talking right next to us.
Seems like our signal reception is alright, but the processing really fails in such noise conditions.

@Yora21
@

My cousin was diagnosed as probably going mostly deaf by his teens. He's doing fine with his hearing aides at 20 now, and has become a hearing aid technician.

Thank you Adam! You are helping reshape my thinking about hearing loss! This was helpful, hopeful and inspirational.

I have such bad tinnitus and my hearing is quickly failing me. I hope someday a cure can be found

@FUBARguy107
@

I have auditory processing issues that seem to be brain related. No amount of amplification is going to help me. Can't wait for the new AR glasses so I can just read captions on every conversation.

@Mechnipulation
@

So if you lose your ear, does that mean you lose some hearing?

@rebeccah2729
@

Adam, do you know how you lost your hearing? Was it related to the explosions and blasts you seemed to love while doing mythbusters? I lost mine in combat, small explosions, gunshots and bigger explosions, from bomb or artillery blasts, some of which rendered me unconscious for short periods of time. It turns out you develop losses in certain frequencies when explosions are to blame.

@rogergadley9965
@

Oh, this is fascinating. I’ve always felt I can hear fine volume wise, but in noisy environments I am much worse than the average person at filtering out the noise and hearing what I need to hear. Now it makes a little bit more sense as to why/how that could be.

@ethan073
@

@tested We need a cure for hearing loss with cochlear haircell regeneration asap!!!! 1 billion dollars would do it an internationally recognized Nuerotologist told me! And he said it would be figured out very quickly! Maybe Adam would like to look into this!?

"... I know about 15% of what is going on ..." Now I understand that Andrew is a real expert, who realises how much he doesn't know!

@rgoodwinau
@

My dad lost his hearing navigating planes in Vietnam and refused hearing aids for most of my life. So I got used to living at 100% volume and since my voice is on the higher end of the spectrum speaking very loudly to overcome his deficits

When he finally “caved” and got hearing aids was life changing for us all!

@catherinebhicks
@

It's nice seeing more people talk about hearing loss and the stigma around hearing aids. I have had multiple sets of tubes and ended up needing a fully tympanoplasty. It didn't heal well, so now I'm effectively deaf in my left side, and it really is hard to explain the impact it has on your life. The constant tinnitus never being drowned out and the loss of accurate directional hearing makes life so much harder.

@sumthingmessy
@

14:25 this is exactly how we on the spectrum (ADD autism for ex.) hear everyday in classrooms and in public.
That's why we complain about sounds.

@derptweaker945
@

Can this technology be used to also counteract tinitus? Every time I've gotten a hearing test, the volume of noise inside the box from my tinitus is amazing. Also, my hearing seems to need to be activated by a couple of words before it picks up sound that's actually usable, i.e. I usually miss the first word or two someone says, but when the test uses the "Say the word 'example''" method I can hear the word fine, giving me a false good hearing result.

@kzookid2051
@

My fathers hearing has significantly declined, i wish he understood English so I could show him your video!

@nyannikaa
@

Im on the edge of needing hearing aids. I have to get tested for work every 3 years. Every time, I fail the test, go to the audiologist, and get a note that says my hearing loss is manageable and does not require hearing aids. Not that I could afford them anyway.

@starhawke380
@

I'm still trying to come to terms with my audiologist telling me that I should get fitted with hearing aids for tinnitus with hearing loss. So I appreciate this video.

Frequency offsets…tinnitus?

@ricksanderson4640
@

Great video Adam. Like you a hearing aid user, I find the science fascinating. Maybe you will touch on this but I often wonder if Dolby technology could be used to offset tinnitus. The department at Vandy might have some thoughts on that. Since Dolby plays a corespondent frequency that offsets tape hiss, could this work for tinnitus?

@ricksanderson4640
@

I have been wearing Hearing Aids since I was 18 months. I just went through the same thing you're doing in the middle of the video Monday the 22nd. I would love to help you out. I'm currently wearing a hearing aid that I built out of multiple hearing aids. I have a hard time with explaining digital versus analog!

@stephensullens3373
@

A bit of feedback to the cameraman. Moving around that much makes me a bit seasick and tired. Having to compensate for the changing angles and distances takes its toll. This was extremely obvious in the sound dampening room (didn't hear what it was called). Hope this helps.

@petertragardh4571
@

Now it makes sense as to why our ears keep growing as we age - we have evolved to try and capture more sound as our hearing deteriorates!

But my ears are not big enough to compensate my hearing loss... !

@HelenMcLean
@

Adam!
That's an informative video that I really hope that many will watch - and that it's ear-opening to them. 🙂

You and I are about the same age but one difference is that I got my first hearing aids 1974. If you read this and are interested in tanking hearing, tech and both then post an answer with how to contact you. We'd likely have interesting conversations.

Adam I am calling total B.S. on the second "ear-horn " this guy handed to you... If he had said some one made this out of a Bicycle horn I would have given him some credit. And why you didn't call him on it is beside me. That's a cheap bike horn with a brass tip and some Plasti dip on the end...
