How Do Oil Rigs Work? Drilling, Casing, Mud & Blowout Prevention in 3D

Video Overview & Insights

Ever wondered how oil rigs drill thousands of feet below the surface to extract crude oil? This 3D animation takes you deep into the fascinating world of oil exploration and drilling — from the first seismic survey to the final drop of crude oil.

Shout out to everybody who resisted all the cowboy/oilman shows until they wised up and put Ali Larter in Landman (Billy Bob Thornton helps, but if you are of a certain age, you'll never forget Ali and the whipped-cream birthday suit 😆

— @pianoyam

In this video, you’ll learn:

– Seismic surveys using vibroseis trucks and geophones to detect oil reserves.

9:50 - STUPID AI mispronounces "annulus" several times! BAN ALL AI SHIT from youtube!!!!

— @Wadley2256

– Geological mapping to locate porous rock layers trapped beneath cap rock.

– Land-based and offshore oil rigs and how they operate.

What happens down there when done pumping ? Cavity collapses & disappears under pressure ?

— @aaabbb4353

– Wellbore drilling with roller cone bits, kelly drive systems, and casing installation.

– Drilling mud circulation for cooling, lubrication, and debris removal.

Beautiful illustrations ❀

— @WajuMusicPromotion

– Blowout preventers that protect against dangerous high-pressure kicks.

– Horizontal drilling technology to maximise extraction from a single well.

amazing

— @gocarnivoreforlife

– Beam pumps and submersible pumps used for oil lifting onshore and offshore.

Whether it’s a 7000-foot land well or a deep-sea offshore rig, see the complete engineering process that powers the global oil industry.

Kelly tables have not been used for years, if I'm not mistaken.

i enjoyed the bedtime story inflection in the narrators voice , because im only 3 years of age.

Love this video, can anyone hook me on a job on an oil rig, I'm a final year student, wanting the experience

This is still confusing.

Mast??? How about derrick?

whoever did your reaserch next time you need to explain hydrostatic presure, the most important part of drilling, you did not mention it, drill mud is used to carry out cuttings and cool the bit but its primary purpose is to control the upward pressure coming from hydrocarbon formation, the bob are a safety thing not the primary control system. HYDROSTATIC PRESURE IS THE WEIGHT OF A COLLUM OF FLUID.

Never worked on or heard of a rig turning to the left

Very informative for a technical person (electronics) but not in this field.

I think the title should be " How did Oil Rigs Drill Wells 50 Years Ago" the material you are posting is years out of date.

As a student engineer of oil and gas production I say thank you for this gorgeous explanation. Thank you.

The Canadian accent is as bad as Ai voice

Your AI doesn't sound British. Why is it saying mee-thane instead of meh-thane?
Thumbs down!!!

Its called the "An-U-luss
An'u'ler space is the space between pipe inside pipe or pipe between it and open hole.
F'n AI will never take over oil and gas. Ive been 26,000' in the hole and A I can not do what I do... internal oil well maintenance and rig workovers, coil tubing, snubbing, slick-line or electric line and ANYTHING IN-BETWEEN. Go pound sand AI.

So why do we have cgi of a satellite flying over Mars?

I worked 47 years. From 1977 to 2025. My deepest vertical well I took part was some 4500m (14,700 feet) well. My longest horizontal well I took part from surface to final depth was 7620m (25,000 fett). I loved oil drilling.

It’s slips not sleeves btw

I have a drill bit as my door stop in my bed room , I miss busting ass in the field did completion work for years.

I wouldn’t want to be the guy who forgot to attach the sleeve to the rod.

As a driller, some of this is true. But a good portion is not. If you don't work in the industry, don't try doing a video explaining it. There's a lot more going on then anyone could ever explain.

@kevingriffith598
@

They’re slips, not sleeves

@LaceyVandepol
@

Best explanation I have seen but Im still not sure about a lot of this such as how does the rig continue to drill when the blow out protector is installed. I lost track of how many casings there were but one assumes the drill head diameter must reduce with each casing so in a deep well what diameter would the pipe be at the bottom?

I can't understand how someone came up with and built such a complex oil refinery. This is incredible.

Of course nobody will use this info - America already has all the oil

What did Mars have to do with anything?
Why show a snippet of Mars?
That makes me question your integrity.

Working on a land rig we could drill 10,000 feet in two to three weeks. There are many inaccuracies in this video.

Fam invented that drill bit

„advanced satellite imaging“
. on mars? Why would you put an animation of a satellite flying over mars there? are we drilling on mars already? ;D

Oil isn’t just a commodity — it shapes geopolitics, economies, and global power dynamics. Every shift in production or pricing sends ripple effects across industries and nations. Understanding oil means understanding how the modern world really works.

Work on your terminology, use industry terms. You are close in this video but missing a lot of points. One, drilling mud with weight additives is used to prevent a blowout. It must be equal or greater than the pressure of the oil reserve you are drilling into, in addition to cooling and removing the the drill bit cuttings.
