How Data Centers in Space Could Change AI

Video Overview & Insights

“Data centers in space” may sound like science fiction, but as the SpaceX IPO augurs a space boom, tech giants and startups are betting orbital artificial intelligence is the next frontier.

— @ratmondC

Building data centers in space is still a relatively nascent idea, but it’s gaining traction and financial backing, as energy and space constraints limit the expansion of massive computing facilities here on Earth. Earlier this year, in the latest leg of their decades-long space race, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin both announced plans to build and launch so-called orbital data centers.

Sounds like sending in a remote submarine to rescue the Thai football team from the flooded caves...

4km by 4km is 16 square km, not 4 square km. The reporter obviously failed elementary maths

The problem is a certain oompa loompa wants to keep using coal and won’t limit these data centres.

These rich companies thinks they own the planet for them to freely pollute, while regular humans suffer the consequences.

3:27 , Square root of 4 km sq is just 2km by 2km

"It's an advantage in times of war"
How exactly? How do you defend these space datacenters from Earth?

was it for SpaceX

Yeah, keep cluttering space and turn it into a junk yard.

IF SOMETHING IS ALREADY CALCULATED, WHY WOULD IT NEED TO BE CONSTANTLY CALCULATED.. . THEREFORE THERES ONLY A FINITE AMOUNT OF THINGS THAT NEEDS TO BE CALCULATED.. .

I really think we shouldn't leave our future in space in the hands of a few lunatic billionaire. We are one chain event away from locking ourselves on the surface of this planet forever.

@Seicks
@

Did you know that since 2010, we know that covering a small section of the Sahara Desert with solar panels could meet the entire energy demand of the planet? It’s silly to see the idea of space data centers. You just need to invest in solar, geothermal, and other energy sources, period. Space data centers are a terrible idea—if a cable fails, would you send a rocket to replace it? Think about it. We’re in a bubble selling ideas that aren’t realistic yet, since doing business on Earth is still cheaper and much easier to maintain.

So just not going to mention space x is going to do all this and put these people out of business or absorb them?

@gregmarkel2836

Spacex has as much of a chance to put this proposed plan into action as I have into doing the same thing from my back terrace by the beach in far Rockaway and making everything out of soda cans taken from recycling😅😅😅😅😅

@jamesbarry1673

Servers need occasional maintenance. Thousands of them daily. Aka almost impossible.

@mewcrazy
@

This video is more like an ADVERTISEMENT of spaceX than anything else.

Conveniently blackboxing all the important details, constraints, challenges, anything which adds substance.

@sridharaddagatla
@

This is the dumbest idea ever. It way cheaper just to build it on earth or a plot of low value land. What next, launching garbage into the sun at a cost greater than gold by weight so you don't have to build another landfill?

@lisaoshiro842
@

So is Star cloud same as space X?

@hardroad1536
@

Are they planning a satellite network or an orbiting prison wall? How are we supposed to leave Earth orbit with millions of satellites blocking the way?

@aliensoup2420
@

If they are going to block humanity's view of the heavens that we are entitled to, that is our birthright, then you will see a lot of "amateur kinetic space launchers" being deployed to "clean the windshield".

@gregoberski5897
@

Isn't the ocean a more practical solution? You get cooling and wave power at the same time. Wave power is constant just like solar.

@Jake_2046

Won’t happen Won’t be the way to go If you have any idea about space congestion You know this won’t happen

Bloomberg please take your ia phsycosis medicine

@matscarlmeyer2832

So they are r&d-ing what starlink is doing right now! And will be doing in larger scale with gpus. Way to report this!!

@mulletshizzle
@

This is all a scam, will NOT be profitable and go bust like solar roadways or SpaceX. 3D renderings do not mean a concept will work. Just look at Starship- the program and SpaceX will be long bankrupt before Starship lands on Mars.

@nationalistfanatic6291
@

From “full self driving” that’s really just level 2 autonomy to “2 Starships a month to Mars” to data centers in space- it’s just another scam that will never happen. This is peak bubble action.

@nationalistfanatic6291
@

How much did they pay you to post this

@Corncorncorncorncorncorncorn

so how are they addressing maintainence, problems/issues, or upgrades when old hardware is obsolete?

This lady narrator talks like she's speaking to a 6 year old

@StoicMadman

Cute how Bloomberg makes a video about this, but avoids mentioning SpaceX who is at the frontier.

@theplacetest
@

There’s almost zero benefits to running a data center in space. The operational costs for it would be absurd. And we can’t even fathom building a datacenter large enough. The idea that we will run out of places to build on earth and that space is the best alternative is almost laughable. The problems with it stack up so much its literally the worst option there is

@skeliskull

Space x, hire me , I want to contribute

Definitely for a science fiction idea

@NikoNiko-e7n

During wartime if countries start destroying data centers in space the resulting debris could create a massive problem.

@nazirhussain7231
@

This is all silly, biological computers (like our brain) do more 20 watts than data centers do with gigawatts. We have a whole market of folks chasing a relegated solution. Imagine Galielo said a world can be moved with a lever; however we use hydraulics. Same principle different problem.
