The thing is Hollywood actors are getting lost through the pool of social media ( YOUTUBE TIK TOK INSTAGRAM, TWITCH, quatrillions of STREAMING movies diving into the pool as well . Think about all the distractions we do have now, our attention span are getting shorter and shorter. How many of you has started to watch a movie to only postpone it because you suddenly had the fear of missing out on other contents and forgotten to watch the movie all together ? It's so crowded inundated, when there are so many choices how can you possibly pick one to watch it for 90 min?

Back in the day it was different then, no social media just think about it. Movies had a whole different AURA because we were mentally In different state no Gadgeties to play with thus allowing us to live in moment capturing all the emotions the movie had to offer. Actors were making big money back then because the attention span they could gather. At the end of the day that's what it is. People flocking to the theater due to the ACTOR's name in the movie poster.

Sometimes I'm wondering how actor can make money these days the attention span they used to have has been divided and shared through the spectrum of social media.

Studios in the past knew how important stars were and they purposely tried to manufacturer them. Stars are what drew people to see movies. When studios run out of stars, they will learn the errors of their ways.

Most people I know irl besides myself don’t watch movies at all anymore, especially new ones. If they are, they’re not talking about it. I have a younger sibling who is 19 and I think he could count on one hand the number of movies, whether new or old, he has seen in the past decade. He is the norm, not the exception.

The younger generation doesn’t know or care about who your movie stars are. If I asked a random person under age 25 today if they know who Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise, or Brad Pitt are, I’d get blank stares even if I pulled up photos of those stars.

I think Chris Nolan might qualify as a star. It’s hard to imagine people being excited to see a movie about a physicist or buying tickets a year in advance for a movie based on a poem we all read back in high school if someone else were directing. Yes, IP is what studios love. But Nolan seems to be the exception and the success of Oppenheimer proves that moviegoers want original material as well.

They can’t promote like they used to. We all had network and or cable tv. They could run ads on every channel if they wanted. Streaming services mostly only promote their own shows. Since ditching cable I only hear about the biggest projects.

I think this is a false choice. I don't miss summer blockbusters dominated by the latest Arnold or Stallone flick any more than I am enjoying the endless franchises and IP. It's just subbing one superficiality for another.

Either way, it is just based on name recognition and pop culture and not substance. I hate the IP dominance of movies. But it's not unique to movies... It is pervasive. Even domains that have no clear equivalent to the movie star are today dominated by IP... And the SAME IP, at that. Yet another MCU phase, yet another Cthulhu board name, yet another FPS set in WW2...

Originality is hard. Substance is subjective. But Familiarity is easy to reproduce. And Spectacle doesn't require interpretation or invite critique.

But I don't think we need to go back to the old Hollywood star system just to escape from this inundation of new product we are expected to mindlessly consumer. Studios used to have the clout of stars... No one pines for the days when you'd be itching to see the new Universal picture ... do they?

Remember when Netflix started doing originals and it was considered disruptive and shook up Hollywood because they were greenlighting original and creative ideas and featured mostly unknown talent? That was refreshing at the time, at least for me. Because the era of the action hero is gone, in spite of Keanu as John Wick.

There's lots of quality, quirky, and transgressional films out there. From Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, or the Holdovers, to something like Terrifier 3 that harms back to the high times of the 80s when banned films would succeed purely on the hype around them, there's a lot of alternatives to Disney, The MCU and mindless junk based on IP.

I also think the clout of the director is still alive and well. I don't have any stars I would go see a movie because they were in it, but I will totally check for the next Tarantino film. And there are plenty of newer voices and visions out there. Look at the success of Dinners or Mid Sommar. Or look at how Oppenheimer teamed up with Barbie to create a cultural moment. I don't care who started in those, just that they were ... Great.

Another thing to remember is that gimicks in the film industry are cyclical and have a certain shelf life. It's why we don't flock to cowboy movies, gangster movies, disaster movies, or book series adaptations anymore. It's not just that people want to watch movies for actors versus IPs anymore, it's also that the cinematic universe concept is in the last lap of it's popularity before something else takes its place.
