How Caffeine Addiction Changed History (ft. Michael Pollan) | WIRED

Video Overview & Insights

90% of the world's adults consume some form of caffeine everyday, making it the most widely used psychoactive drug on Earth. Michael Pollan, author of "This Is Your Mind On Plants," explains why. Michael goes into the history of coffee drinking, breaking down its origins and how it benefits humankind.

Without being TMI caffeine definitely helps my colon “motility” more than anything else

Had a bit of recovery on coffee addiction,I had even missed just a day of not drinking because there is no sugar but suddenly just a day of not drinking I had a major headache and even twitching while I feel just,,,,awful which is what I could describe. I usually drank coffee three times which is morning, afternoon and night which now after I realize it I develop a horrible addiction.

It was actually bad as I had a headache and my behavior is irratically and weirding out my relatives while my patience is getting shorter,,,,

this video is flawed, it is ruining your life without you knowing it. coffee is a legal drug. I was on it for 20 years of my life. hard stop will give you headaches and withdraw symptoms just like an illegal drug. i've stopped it by supplementing with tea and having a cup coffee on a week for a few months. now I don't have any coffee or tea. the sleep is AMAZING! dreams are vivid. wake up refreshed and engergy is consistent throughout the day. coffee is great once in a while, not a regular everyday thing. dont let it become an everyday thing.

I can’t see the difference between coffee and alcohol, both “functional” drinks make me feel good🤩

And I think this obsessive need for more and production is a big cause of current failure as a species.

The same thing that you could argue against those who demonize alcohol can be made for coffee demonizers: If you can't handle it, it's bad FOR YOU.

It made most people jittery, nervous, fatigued, annoyed. Thinking they are productive, while they're actually not.

Och, millions of people have 1-2-3 cups of coffee a day and are perfectly fine and sleep very well (actually I know people who can have a double espresso before bed and sleep like a baby - it's genetic, not everyone is sensitive to caffein).

It should be irritating to everyone that medical degreed and psuedo medical people use the term "WE." This is such an inaccurate cop-out for accurately communicating results. To me, the term WE is nearly an insult. You use the term we? I automatically become skeptic of your methods, results and conclusions.

This video is edited in a way that Pollan seems quite positive about coffee, while in longer talks he is much more critical about it.

Maybe stopping drinking alcohol all day made us productive not the fact that we drank caffeine. Sure caffeine stimulates us and may give us more ideas, but once you're dependent on it that magic disappears.

I'm a bus driver. I've been drinking coffee (only 1 cup a day) for little over a year. I clearly remember the first week or so when I started - my sleep was the first thing effected - I could not get enough. I'd find that through out the day I'd get some weird psycedelic 'dejevu' feelings as if i was micro napping.. I'm at a point where I think I'll quit - I've been getting anxiety and heart papaltations lately and have a feeling this might all be related to the caffeine - the doctor put me on blood pressure meds a few months ago also. It's certainly a 'vice' which I can live without. I'll save my self a few dollars as well as mostly I'm buying coffee during lunch at shopping malls etc.

As person who has never used stimulants. It's is like if you need coffee either you like the buzz or are just bad at planning. And need more energy due to not having your life organized

As a person who has struggled with various addictions, including coffee on which im still hooked. I DO think it is a bad thing to be dependent on ANY plant. Even if you do have easy affordable access to and it's not ruining your life.
