How and why I changed my life

Video Overview & Insights

This video isn’t a personal attack on anyone who believes different things from me. It’s about me and my experiences and what has been true and good in my life so let’s not make it about hate or you being mad that I don’t approve of your lifestyle that may be similar to my old one. I care for anyone reading this no matter your sins or lifestyle and wish you the best. Also I say ‘you know’ a lot when I’m nervous so I’m sorry I said it so many times. It cringes me out so bad but I can’t remake it because it will feel too weird and not true so it is what it is.

Thanks for the words of inspiration Shayne

Maybe you don't realize it yet but ... like me and many of us ... God put you through all of that so that you'd recognize the moment he picked your cross up for your. We love you brother. Go forth and baptize in his name, creating other disciples.

Wow thank you sharing your life, struggles and your journey towards healing. I'm really happy I stumbled across your video, as a fan who saw you many times on the dry bar comedy show.

@18:40 Stop watching corn? You try that in the Midwest and you'll die - nothing but cornfields. You'll drive off the road and they'll find your body at harvest. Terrible idea.

I don’t think anyone has ever plainly explained both sides, the dark and the light as eloquent as you did bro. Truly inspiring. I hope someday I can meet you, you genuinely seem like a great guy.

You’re smart, funny, no make that hilarious, and I enjoyed this video of your perspective and transformation from one side to the other. Stay in Gods Word Shane, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17

Thank you for having the courage to share your story! Even though I already follow Jesus Christ, there are perspectives I need to work on. The main one being the "self-care is important & should come first." I was taught that I had to take care of myself first before I could take care of anyone else. It's funny bc as you were saying self-care is poison i was lit thinking, "but how can I pour from an empty cup?"...but then you said, "they're afraid of being uncomfortable, being tired..." and of course, you're right! So I was like, "oh crap!" 😅 I'll def be reflecting on my points of view. This helped me. God bless you 🙏

I would have to write a straight-up essay to adequately describe my thoughts on this video. This comment is gonna be pretty long anyway, but I promise I'm summarizing to the best of my ability.

I like your work and respect you as a person, but the implication that you could only have a proper framework of morality because of religion can be problematic, andf basically suggesting people destroy themselves for the greater good is, by default, harmful advice. I am an egalitarian anarchist (left-leaning, abviously) and I did the things you suggest to the best of my ability since I was 16 (I'm also severely disabled due to an amount of childhood trauma inconceivable to most people and chronic pain that started when I was 13 that doctors refuse to treat) and all I did was drain myself and revoke most of my capability to help people later in my life. I had to force myself to step aside and focus on my own well-being in recent years due to the severity of extra trauma I experienced living that way.

Self-care isn't just hedonism like you suggest; that's your perception based on your own experiences. True self-care is things like making sure you exercise, trying to eat well, taking time to yourself to recharge when you're emotionally exhausted, keeping up with hobbies that actually fulfil you, etc. I realize the common practise of self-medication is almost always harmful, but chalking it up to hedonism by default is pretty dismissive and unempathetic. I would literally have ended everything as a teen if I didn't do a certain drug because my body literally doesn't produce serotonin. I have two anxiety disorders and am risking stress-related heart disease if I don't have a beer or two and decompress when it goes off. The solution was hard liquor for about 9 years, but I'm working on that and I don't need a religious or political framework to do so.

While I respect your path, there are ways towards the same goals of fulfillment, happiness and the ability to help others aside from some form religion, and while those paths may be more difficut and require a lot more work and objective self-reflection, they tend to be more valuable in the long run. I understand how people turn to religion in a lot of cases because it sucks ass to actually do the work (especially if self-hatred and/or anhedonia come into play), but religion isn't a necessity to do so. (To be clear, I am not by any means an atheist. Polytheist, actually.) Religion/spirituality, in my opinion, is supplementary. I believe in doing the difficult psychological (and sometimes physical, for health reasons) work first in most cases and pursuing spiritual fulfillment second, because it's your flesh prison and your brain that need to be taken care of most. You can't help people if you're dead, either literally or figuratively.

I'm interested to see how things progress with these new changes in your life, and genuinely wish you the best. I know this comment comes off very critcal, but I also believe that criticality is required in all aspects of life. (Probably one of the reasons I took up worship of an archaic version of one of my gods lol)

I'mma go play some Resident Evil with my brother now. Take care of yourself (that goes for everyone reading this comment). And please, please, can I not have to deal with religious debates with the Abrahamic followers in these comments. I've had a lot of their ilk read about my trauma online and try to convert me, just to treat me like the antichrist when I point out why that faith is dead to me. It will not be well-received.

Im so thrilled for you, but I really think your off the mark about nondenominational Christians. We are your brothers and sisters. You know first hand the difficultly and hate we face in the world we live in. There are outliers in every faith, but we are ride or die for Christ too. Being a good person has nothing to do with it.

We’re on the same side.

I think it’s great and all that you found a purpose in Catholicism, I’m in the process of proselytizing myself. What I have found, however, is that the rate at which domestic violence occurs in Catholicism is not at all unlike the rest of society. That being said, domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children in the U.S. and the leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women is homicide committed by the father. A statistic that is also present within the Church.
My concern is that all you’ve really done is to awaken to the fact that you’re a white guy who has only to make a few adjustments of thought and action to realize this world was created by white guys for white guys and that a whole world of freedom has opened up to you, having done so.
Meanwhile, despite all of the tangible things the church does to alleviate hunger and nakedness, around the world, and the money poured into hospitals for addiction and adoption, there is little effort other than a “firm stance against violence”, that addresses the unsustainable problem of abuses against women and children. These problems are at the very core of human suffering. If the family is important to society then it certainly is upon the church to take a more active stance, like the one against abortion. Statistics show that most women seeking abortions aren’t even women, they’re children. And statistically the majority of these pregnancies are caused by a man over 30 years of age.

You almost lost me when you started out saying how progressive and liberal you were. But telling of your change and epiphany gained my respect and love for you. I had my first epiphany when I got out of the Army in 1992. It was then that I learned how conservative I truly was. The hype of the left sounds great, but is all built on a utopia and is not sustainable. It leads to the hypocrisy and hatred that you spoke of. My coming to the Lord came in 2000 after my wife left me. There inlies where things really started to make sense. I say to keep the faith and keep fighting the good fight and spreading the word 💯

My friend went to counseling, got antipsychotics, and really tried hard. To be normal. There is no Normal... No common sense .... he killed his entire family and himself. Please just talk to someone. Find a therapy line or something. Letting things dwell will o ly drive one insane. Keeping things a secret is a lot like solitary confinement.

How do you know?
I get that people believe or have faith, but how do you know? I've been able to forgive people who have wronged me. And I understand how when you forgive someone it isn't for them but for you. So that you can let go of something you no longer need to hold onto. But... I don't know how to forgive myself or even what I'd need to forgive myself for....

I don't believe, but I want to.

The phrase "your feelings are valid" is supposed to mean that it isn't inherently wrong for you to feel any which way about something. Where it goes off the rails in when people use the way they feel as a justification to act any which way, and doing that is the thing that is wrong to do.

People can think or feel anything about anything and those are vaild. But not all actions are valid. just because something makes someone angry doesn't mean they can (for example) riot and destroy public property and call it a protest.

@DragoX7

Wonderful!!! I was thinking at the start of this video is "all you need is Jesus" and I'm so glad that you found him!! None of us are perfect, life is so hard and we all have those dark moments we wish we could remove or redo but when we find the truth, God gives us a peace you cannot buy and a promise you can actually trust, life suddenly falls into place and everything else falls to the wayside, there are different denominations but the banner of Jesus Christ flies above all of them and telling your truth will hopefully save some people in more ways than you know🙏🏻 Enjoy being a Dad, it's the best❤️

I think your life change is wonderful. 🙂 The number of people you have helped/will help by turning them to Jesus is far more important than those who disapprove of your choices. God wants us to share The Good News! Some people will never know, while others will take some time. Better late than never.

You spoke so much truth in this video, Shayne. There's nothing like the unconditional Love of God. It's better than any therapy or drug! I love how you expressed gratitude to the people who helped you along your path. God was always watching out for you. I had this experience after I found Jesus - the realization that He was always watching and waiting for me to reach out to Him. "Be who you know you are", indeed! ❤ Blessings to you. 🙏

By the way, I love your comedy, you are a gifted storyteller for sure! Comedy creates joy and helps us deal with life. It is important work! I hope you keep at it, while also being open to other opportunities to do The Lord's work.

Hell yeah we need more leftists like you! Those who have done the work to better themselves and heal their relationships with real communities.
I’m a Transguy and I refuse to see myself as a victim. However, I experienced being “cancelled” by some leftists over something truly small and stupid once, and it fucking wrecked me. I found what you shared really resonated about those types of people. I felt lost too. It wasn’t until I started practicing Buddhism and more recently volunteering with mutual aid groups that really made me feel connected to the place and people where I live. Also joining a union at my work and reconnecting with my much more traditional family who I have finally won over despite their disapproval of my transition - it all works out when you face challenging things with Love and like you said throwing yourself at people and situations with an open heart. 💜 thanks for sharing your journey

Hold Fast

More Than Words — A Way of Living

“Hold Fast.”

Two simple words.

Yet throughout history, they have carried extraordinary weight.

Sailors painted them on ships. Military units adopted them as mottos. Families passed them down through generations. Faith communities embraced them during hardship. Leaders used them during times of uncertainty.

At its core, Hold Fast means to remain firmly anchored when everything around you is moving.

It means:

* Stand firm when circumstances become difficult.
* Remain committed when others walk away.
* Stay grounded in your principles when pressure encourages compromise.
* Keep moving forward when the outcome is uncertain.

Holding fast does not mean refusing to adapt.

It does not mean stubbornness.

It does not mean ignoring reality.

In fact, holding fast often requires the opposite.

It requires the wisdom to adapt while remaining faithful to what matters most.

The world changes.

Markets change.

Relationships change.

Organizations change.

Circumstances change.

But some things should remain steady:

Your integrity.

Your character.

Your values.

Your faith.

Your commitment to doing what is right.

Those are the anchors that allow you to weather the storm.

“The storm does not determine who you are. The anchor does. Hold Fast.” — J. Sterlace 2026

Eventually people get to a point where they realize the external won’t provide what they are seeking and the real changes come from going internal and facing things. It’s tough, lonely and most don’t understand what you are going through but the internal work must be done to get out of those places.

@JholdWfastS

I think this was a beautiful message that so many (including myself) need to hear. I think the transformation you have gone through is awesome and I’m so happy to hear the happiness in your voice and the exciting path you have out in front of you. I think your view on politics in particular, could be so important for many to hear, because you can speak from a unique standpoint, having lived lives on both sides of street, so to say. And not only that, but you can speak to the true characteristics and mindsets of the people on each side and you are one of the few that knows what the pathway from deep within one camp, over to the other camp looks like, and the realities of what it takes for someone to cross that divide. I want to congratulate you on the strength and courage you have displayed along your journey. I want to congratulate you on being able to open your eyes and see the reality of the things going on around you It takes courage to accept what your eyes see and to make changes based on those realities. That is a skill that will forever serve you well. Don’t ever loose that ability to see things for what they are. Most of all I’m so happy to hear you found Christ! That is the most important discovery a person can make in their lifetime and it sounds like you have truly embraced the fundamentals that God wants us to live by and your such a realist and you know and accept the fact that you are not perfect, will never be perfect and that you have done evil things and you ask for forgiveness for these things and understand that you have been forgiven and you live life without those burdens and you have discovered how great it is to forgive others and I’m sure this all ties back in for you and shows you why these are so important and how Christ wants us to live. So many things about your journey are wonderful and exciting to hear about but most of all I’m thrilled to hear where your at today and the plans you have moving forward and how you’re expectations are set and it’s all refreshing to hear and it makes my day a little better just listening to the happiness in your voice knowing that you have found your way and are showing others that way too. Good luck in all you do, God bless you and I look forward to hearing more from you in the future!!

Wow. You've been one of my favorite comedians for years now, I just gotta say, I'm so flippin proud of you!! I can guarantee that realization and entire transition was not an easy feat by ANY means!! And your beautiful story does give me a little hope though... I, too, just went through my own wildest and unreal two years of my life. Although, my experience may differ slightly from yours. I was actually dating an individual who, from the sounds of it, seems to be living life in an extremely simpler way of which you have described for yourself. It was beyond a painful experience. I went through a lot and most don't get how I can't absolutely hate him for the things he did and pain he caused not only me, but so many others through his actions and behavior. I just wish he could see that he truly could change for the better rather than, as he calls it, him becoming more and more like a degenerate everyday. 😢 He just doesn’t believe he's capable of being helped, says he's too stubborn to change anyways, yet hates living life envious of others with a black hole through him making him feel like an empty, hallowed out ghost stuck on earth. He can't stand being alone with his own thoughts and has to have someone, anyone, lined up every night to hookup with just so he isn't alone. And, yes, I've found out that he has a few rotating individuals, a form of supply some call it, to be with in order to make that happen. And when one discovers what he's really doing (as he does make these individuals believe instantly that they're soul mate and builds his new fantasy with each. He just goes out to obtain more on all his dating sites and he'll take what he can get. I suggested to him why not just be straightforward and don't lead others on, let them know he's dating others as well, many adults don't necklaces care too much, at least until someone starts to catch the feels. But at least they were informed.
Nope.
He lives a very reckless, drug induced life. Something he hid from me a majority of the time. I know theres still more to him that I don't know about. He never wanted me to see through him, only see the great single loving father who was hard working... Explained that he was a high school drop out, but appearing smart, kind, gentle, and highly intelligent was the persona he wanted me to view him as. According to him, that's because I'm educated with a degree, single mom who chose to put my daughter first and not date until she was raised— she's now 19 and in training to be in law enforcement.
But once he knew that I knew.... his beautifully curated image he tried so hard to keep up. Shattered to pieces. As shat hit the fan, his life completely derailed and he was exposed to... a lot of people, I'll just say that.

Things only got worse, but I hung around and tried to help him as best as I could, until it was time when I knew it just wasn't a safe environment for me to be anymore.I had to leave and accept things for what they were and close that chapter myself.

It's only been mere months, but i genuinely appreciate you for being so vulnerable and choosing to share inspirational journey with the world. By doing that, you have no idea how many others are going to hear your story and also be inspired. There's no doubt you've just changed an infinite amount of lives by being so brave and posting this. I wish you could speak to my ex 1:1, share your testimony, and who knows, be the miracle he needs to wake up and snap out of it. He's said that he's accepted that he'll never truly be happy or fulfilled in life. Always seeking out trying to find more that will fill his emptiness. It's all he knows, he told me. I tried so hard to help with a chance in perspectives and I could see a few times where a light would flicker briefly and he'd genuinely be puzzled and say he never thought of it from said perspective and it was something he'd ponder about.
Who knows. It's all in God's hands now.
I'll add ya to my prayers! Should you choose to share more again, I'll be cheering ya on! This is powerful and life changing not just for you, but others as well.
God bless.
