How A24 took over Hollywood
Video Overview & Insights
They went from solely distributing uncut indie gems to getting everything they made everywhere all at once
Quick clarification for eagle-eyed film viewers: While A24's Lady Bird was Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut, in 2007 she co-directed the film Hannah Takes the Stairs with Joe Swanberg, which was produced with Film Science and later distributed by IFC Films.
Lady Bird is one of my favorite A24 films. Nate’s favorite was Hereditary. What’s your favorite? Let us know down below.

When you think back on your favorite movies, you might think about their famous directors or actors. But recently, a new name has become synonymous with indie film culture and appeal, and it’s not an individual, but a studio.
AI24. Nah, thanks.
You have to admit, their logo is pretty cool.
A24 swept the 2022 Oscars. They’ve made some of the most distinct and interesting movies and TV shows of the past 10 years. But most importantly, they’ve garnered a reputation for quality — and their brand loyalty so strong that hipster film bros everywhere are wearing A24 t-shirts and caps right now.
Their strategy was make movies people actually want to watch😂 who would’ve thought
But unlike Universal or Paramount, studios that have been around for over a century, A24 has done this in just over a decade. How did this independent film distributor transform into a major player in the entertainment industry in such a short time?
In this Vox Video, Nate Jones (senior writer at Vulture, and A24 obsessor) breaks down their history, and stratospheric rise to the top. Read more of Nate's writing on Vulture:

@oniricPrjThanks for the analysis. This is something to really ponder on.
@sophiaisabelleeeeei’ve been saying for years that A24 is the best production company in the film industry my first movie i saw from them was Ex Machina and i knew they were special from there
@kometbuxaplentyA24 is already not what it was 4+ years ago. they got too hollywood
@A_BrownDude97Is this just another Hollywood treatment?
@JohnathanGreay-187Dude, when the Oscars effed that up when they announced La La Land won the Oscar and then changed it to moonlight with hilarious
@quantum_beebDon’t know if I’d call a movie with Selena Gomez and James Franco “Indie” lol
@quantum_beebHuh, before watching this video and after being a fan of their movies for so long, I never really dig deep into the name A24 itself.
@gabrielaguilar9345Thank god for a good algorithm
@TiredyoungmanNeon is the new A24
@jchen1023A24 is the best!!
@ShadowPhoenixNetworkAlmost watched this video then realized it was from VOX 🤢 haven’t had credibility in YEEARSSS
@brieflyobsessedBro tried to sneak ‘Peele’ in there next to Hitchcock and Spielberg. lol.
@macmcdowell1757tried to sneak in jordan peele in there 0:05
@dirbydrjpegIsn't this super similar to Miramax? Am curious how they differ.
@martinsoler3531This hits differently after seeing the announcement for the Moana remake
@octosquid48so in other words, selling mediocrity...
@RAGECREATORSA24 is what Hollywood should be
@HeroBaxterA rookie stepped in, set the Hollywood on fire, stamped their authority. I saw that in A24!
@impvkrishnaI like almost all movies from A24, excep Beau is Afraid.
@zioziozieit makes sense to me why A24 is so popular. What does not make sense to me is that there are a lot of A24 haters. Two friends of mine are like "oh, that's an A24 movie? yeah, you love A24 don't you?" and they say it in such a passive aggressive and condescending way and it always annoys me. Like IM SORRY that I enjoyed Everything Everywhere All At Once and Ex Machina. I guess I have awful taste in movies. It's ridiculous
@IAmSarlosCantanaI've always said that A24 was the wagyu beef of Flims.
@angryvideogamenerd2244I have written my debut coming-of-age novel and I would A24 to make it a movie ⚘️
@planete.eleveneThe general public doesn’t want A24 films. The average global box office for an A24 movie is around $12 million. The mainstream audience simply doesn’t connect. Now, I don’t doubt the creator of this video loved some A24 productions — and I’m sure hundreds of thousands of others did too. But that’s a tiny number. Not even 0.02% of the 5 billion movie tickets sold each year. So why is that? After all, the total lack of character development in Marvel scripts is clearly starting to wear thin. Five flops in five years: Madame Web, Kraven, Morbius, The Marvels, The New Mutants — plus a few financial hits ripped apart by critics for their hollow writing. Unlike these high-budget crapfests, A24 at least makes an effort to build a main character. But apparently, that’s not enough. You still have to do it well. And clearly, A24 doesn’t know how.
The question this video should have asked is: what is A24 doing wrong?
I just finished reading Euel Ardens book Down Here in the warmth. They should make it into a movie. It's really walks the line between social commentary and political correctness. It’s so right for the times. I guarantee someone would walk away with an Oscar.
@maxalburg5665Peele😂 great director but not the first person I think of when I think director
@ricksanchez9191You forgot one of the steps: Production --> Distribution --> Exhibition --> Piracy.
@stevebeschakis9775I don't expect every A24 film to be a masterpiece. I love their content than not, but that is what I love about them. Not every movie is a banger, but I have much more respect for a studio willing to fail gloriously than those who play it safe, stale, and boring. A24 is a splash of neon on a gray boring Hollywood canvas.
@lamebrane64746:12 my film professor co-produced Medicine for Melancholy and talked about some of the funny things they had to work around.
@moustachmann1169Peele?
@djwhitesoxThank God for them. Without A24 the only thing in theaters would be superhero dreck.
