how a conversation became the greatest love story in film
Video Overview & Insights
Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight is one of the most acclaimed trilogies in modern cinema. Starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, the films follow Jesse and Celine over 18 years, built almost entirely around dialogue, character, and real-time storytelling.
What's your favorite movie where nothing really happens but you still can't stop watching?
I love long takes, silence and great dialogue in film so I can definitely lose myself watching people living life and doing mundane things for hours, what about you?☀

Before Sunrise is very good. Before Sunset is decent. The third is really bad.

I just re-watched all three films in a row and I still love them all. Conversational films like this, and Smoke with Harvey Keitel, awesome and worth the time even when not much stuff happens. The second film in this series is my favorite but they're all beautiful.
This video essay takes a deep dive into the entire Before Trilogy, including detailed film analysis, behind-the-scenes footage, and interviews with the cast and director. It looks at recurring themes, visual parallels, and Linklater’s influences, including comparisons to Éric Rohmer, the French New Wave, and contemporary filmmakers like Hong Sang-soo. This is a full exploration of how one of the greatest love stories in cinema was made.

I only watched the first movie and it made it very hard to want to watch the others. The philosophy was very surface level, but so was the relationship... and I don't think age is an excuse for that, lest we start patronizing young people. The female lead was way above the male lead's league; whenever he opened his mouth it was hard for me not to cringe. He was just on a totally different spiritual and intellectual level. I kept wishing she'd end up with the random street poet they ran into, who seemed far more interesting. I had a very difficult time understanding why this movie was so acclaimed, and my girlfriend felt the same way. But then, she's like the female lead and I'm like the street poet, so maybe we're biased.

A pretty girl taking pity on a eunuch is a novel idea. She's truly patient.
So sad the director couldn't get laid though - that gal definitely tripped hard when he actually made a movie about missing her signals.

04:10 1. Before
I have watched the three movies that have been made multiple times.
The first movie, before sunrise,, as college students in their roles was creative and unique. The plot line and the way it was executed going through the city was beautiful…the dialogue and acting and directing were just above average. But the screenplay concept.was fabulous.
The second movie, before sunset, was the best of them all. The director with experience and the actors with experience. Remember these films were essentially a dialogue between a male and a female actress for 90% of the movie..
Before midnight, the third movie absolutely totally sucked. The director idiotically allowed the two main actors to have major inputs on the script.. Julie Delpy, was the problem. This was a depressing negative script all due to her. It killed the franchise totally.
The only way they come back for a fourth movie is for Linklater to have complete control over the script. And frankly, it’ll be a geriatric movie and too much time has passed for success other than art house.
Julie killed the franchise. A woke. feminist of the worst type..
07:17 2. Origins
10:41 3. Comparisons
Couldn't continue to watch this video cause I havent seen the last movie yet. The way the second one ended... I began to watch the third one, but nope, im gonna cherish the 2nd ending a little more. Maybe in a couple of years, when im closes to that chapter in life myself.
13:58 4. Choices
15:37 5. The Trilogy
As a Viennese, I love the fact that after all those years Before Sunrise is still the film from my city with the greatest cultural impact
17:21 6. Places
23:28 7. Can love survive time?
its a stunning trilogy.....the story transcends film....
26:49 8. Echoes of Time
28:36 9. The space in between
As basic as it is, this trilogy got me into movies. I remember a summer I spent with my cousins in the Philippines. Rainy day and we couldn't do anything else. My cousin put on Before Sunrise and we were all hooked. We spent the afternoon watching the rest of the trilogy. From there, I became a letterboxd whore.
// Music:
Roie Shpigler - Marbles
My mom showed me the first movie, and I loved it and then I Googled it and found out that it had a sequel, my mom never knew and we watched and loved it, and then the third one was announced and we went to the cinema to watch it. And as you say, it hits very different at different ages.
Ziv Moran - Santa Lucia
Adi Rennert - Walts for a Sad Child
I first watched it as a child and i was surprised and amused by it. I used to tell people it was one of my favorite movies
Tal Tamari - In the Morning (Instrumental Version)
Amos Ever Hadani - Miguel (Instrumental Version)
Thank you for making this - you’ve shown me so much more in these films that I love. ❤️
Adi Rennert - Soft Hymn
Franz Gordon - Corny Old Love Song
Fun fact maybe.
The first background music is know as Sankta Lucia in Sweden and is a melody and song stricktly tied to winter and more specific december 13th when we celibrate Saint Lucia.
Never heard the melody outside of Sweden.
Blood Harmony - Things We Didn't Say (Instrumental Version)
Aerian - Dynasty
Tom Meira Armony - The Tides (Stripped Version)
Franz Gordon - Danse Avec Moi
Americans watching for the first time what is essentially your average European arthouse film. If this were just another Rohmer or Godard, it would be considered one of dozens such films, banal French new wave... But because it’s an American film, people act as if it’s the GREATEST DIALOGUE IN CINEMA, the best romantic story ever told, and the greatest script known to man. It’s exhausting.

This video gives me goosebumps, I've never seen the films, but it is exactly how I met my wife, and we've been together for 20 years, parents to 2 boys. It feels like a Romance movie that has been running for 20 years...

In reality, love is a set of biological and psychological processes by which nature acts upon us to lead us to reproduce and remain together long enough to raise a new generation. Nothing more. We are the victims of these processes. This is often a source of pleasure and gratification, but we do not control the process. That being said, prioritize family and friends. If you have children, accept the idea that you may no longer love the person with whom you had them. It is almost inevitable. But continue to respect each other and be good parents, together or separately. Ah, love.... what a joke!

This whole franchise has a lot of meaning. The meaning of love, sacrifice, and emotion. Oftentimes we take love for granted. Sometimes we regret love. Sometimes we come to accept love for what it is. Sometimes it is best to let go. Sometimes it is okay to hurt. It is part of a cycle that never ends. I believe that is the meaning of life. The cycle of hurt and the cycle of love that come in full-circle.

24:59 hm thats why i loved before sunrise more than any other film. i was 15 when i first watched it and i had just been separated from a guy my age due to external factors. i related so much to having those transient conversations late at night, the kind you dont really thing you can replicate with anyone else, especially when you are 15 and lockdown has just barely lifted basking meaningful human connection in a golden light. i truly believed no one would ever understand me like he does and we would tell each other things we wouldnt even tell our closest friends. we were interested in the same things and honestly we learned so much about the most abstract topics from each other, challenging our beliefs and explaining our own. genuinely being honest and open listeners. we never labelled it anything, we didnt feel the need to yet we both knew how much we meant to each other. i wouldnt call it love, the word is simultaneously too heavy and too light for what we had. we reconnected this year and i recommended him the movie and similar to me he loved before sunrise but wasnt a big fan of before sunset haha. eh we grew up in different directions and the connection never felt as sublime as it did 4 years ago but i am truly grateful for getting the opportunity to feel so deeply.

@SanishMaharjanwow... beautiful analysis! feels like a voice that could have echoed in the background during the movie, as if reminiscing.
I might dare to say you even 'noticed' true underlying elements that actually weren't all for sure intentional. chapeau!
I am 20 and i just watched the trilogy. I am going to watch it every 10 years and see how my perspective on it changes (regarding love and life).
@Koma505Recently watched Heated Rivalry and the story is very insular but not as much as the Before trilogy but it brought right back to these films I've been watching for decades.
@BwrandonPeople got it wrong; for me, the best thing you have with a partner is the present, and conversations that make you feel comfortable and happy.Although sex is also important, it's not as important without trust, honesty, and affection.
@fcay111What about Kim Krizan?
@ArthalotThe beauty of simplicity ❤
@andrispaez374This video is unnecessarily long.
@fennecinspaceEthan is an underated actor
@GregR89Hey, thank you for making this video essay. It's really beautiful the way you putting it all together: your narration, clips of interviews and from the films, and I love how you pick the background music for this essay. When I'm watching it, I also can see how your face expression narrating it from the way you talk. Keep doing it! It's reallyyy good!
@fatimajustinewilatikta3941Película ql fome. 90 minutos perdidos.
@pjpineiroPele or Maradona ?
I would say that Breathless and/or Casablanca are the greatest love stories in film.
My Dinner With Celine and Jesse... This one will become an immortal film cycle. Thanks for this very fine retrospective/commentary on a trilogy of films I dearly love.
@Amanda_B_ReckyndwythThe film is trash.
@lhdhdeebdhdhWas I the only one who found this movie crap?
@angelsrosenaIt well known that Hollywood is selling the best romances, but real life is the best setting for people to get to know each other.
It is such a pity that people are still believing in illusions sold by Hollywood.
I just dislike these 'recipe for romances' because there is a lot of inconsistency, lies and lack of authenticity.
Let's put it clear: real love is NOT an ideal.
I love these films, they mean so much to me. I grew up in Vienna and was 14 when I saw the first film, and it meant so much to me. Also the conversations in the films, it's just amazing. I did find the last one a bit sad though
@sampultapestrybefore sunset (yes i watched before sunrise) was my introduction to a movie without action/drama/suspense, a movie that is not trying to gain your attention every 5 minutes... <3
@Miguel_Noethersuch a beautiful video <3 thanks
@Maria21Santanaloved the behind the scene footages. never seen any video that had both commentary, scenes and behind the scenes footage.
@Tony-q1h2xive never seen these movies. and i think i want to watch them with my wife in reverse order.
@wait4tuesThis trilogy is so wonderful, although the first two are the best for me.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the woman these films were inspired by more. She gives them a real air of tragedy.
For those who are interested, the real “Celine” died in a motorbike crash before the first film was even released. Linklater only found out about this after completing the trilogy, secretly hoping she would hear about the films and make contact. A bit like he portrayed in Before Sunset when Celine comes to Jesse’s book signing, he was hoping for a similar outcome for himself.
As a teenager, I LOVED this movie. So romantic and so sexy. Loved the dialog, the simplicity and well just about everything. The ending of the first one did leave me yearning for more. I didn't love the other movies as much, but that's okay.
@ImagineItColoringINDEED. The greatest love story is one daring title any movies could claim, but if it is not this trilogy, no other movies else could do that either.
@eboytcI first watched it on my plane ride back home a few years ago and it confirmed to me that it wasn’t so much the person but it was the encounter that revived something in me I forgot was there. Sometimes I still think about the walk that began when the sun was setting and people were still out, then at dawn when the cobblestone streets became empty, walking along the Tiber and me getting back to my hotel, waking up 2 hours later unsure of if it was a dream or not. We both felt silly feeling the way we did and ultimately decided that this was the beauty of life and never reached out to each other ever again but I still have pictures of a time that stood still and conversations we both wanted to continue, perfect and untainted.
