Japan will probably lose to Brazil🇧🇷 with a 99% probability. Still, I'm hoping for that 1% chance of victory.

Even though the ineptitude of the referee ended up favoring Japan more than Sweden, I think Japan should be the happier side of the draw considering the chances.

The claims that the referee favoured Sweden are completely asinine by the way, Nakamura was sent out to fix his illegal socks (even if they were given the okay at the pre-match check it is reasonable to think that the hole may have stretched too wide during the match, as the socks are not really meant to be cut into and likely lose some structural integrity, which he maybe even realized, could have been he kept his socks low to hide the holes for this very reason, but that is going into speculation territory).

Also the japanese players where allowed to foul Gyökeres without consequences on multiple occasions.

The most questionable situation in this whole match has to be the situation in the start (around 8 seconds into this video) where a defending japanese player slide tackles the swedish attacker, completely late, completely sweeping his legs and completely missing the ball, when watching a reverse angle of the situation the penalty is clear as day and it is honestly a wonder this is not talked about more.

As seen in football and Formula 1, when tournament officials hail from a European nation, referees often show blatant favoritism toward that country.

EDIT: Saw it from the reverse angle now, this is an extremely late sliding kick, completely sweeping the legs of the attacker. It should have been a penalty kick, without a doubt. If anyone involved should yell foul play about anything, then it is this situation.

Even as an American with stake in TEAM USA, I thought the male referee had a terrible game. The majority of the key decisions seemed to go Switzerland’s way.

They're doing a great job considering Endo, Minamino, Mitoma, and Kubo are missing, and Sano and Tomiyasu are being rested.

While I would also be upset at the sock incident if it were the reverse, I am really disappointed to see so many japanese fans blame everything on the referee when said referee also missed a penalty for Sweden and let the japanese players rough up Gyökeres at almost every chance.

And I dont think it is a stretch to say that Sweden were better in this match.

I dont know if these accounts are mostly troll accounts or if the whole hate-train against Sweden because of the fortunate (yet still deserved imo) qualification has rubbed off on people, but I am kind of sad to see this reaction. I guess my (admittedly probably too romantic) view of [some] japanese people have changed a little...kind of when I saw Brazil play for the first time in ages a number of years back and realized to my disappointment it wasnt all samba football anymore but a lot of deliberate diving (havent watched Brazil play for some time again though, so maybe it has changed now).

The idea is really helpful I will definitely recommend this.

Can someone explain why people think the referee was against Japan? After watching the game, if something it was the opposite. Sweden should have had a handful of freekicks, and a couple of obvious yellow cards for the Japanese. I mean, you can see the frustration of the players during the game, e.g. Gyökeres loosing his mind on the ref after the 10th foul without a freekick

Stop whining about the ref. Watch the game again. The ref was really bad in both directions. Your small players were allowed to do a lot of things that should have been either free kicks or warnings. Your goalkeeper saved you in the last half of the game.
