Highest Grossing Movies of All Time (1979 - 2025)

This is a pretty bad list. Just double the price of a movie ticket and it will beat all the "tops" that are released after that. I would be more interested in the number of movie tickets sold, that would give a more realistic picture.

This list just shows how people used to watch GOOD movies. Today, you have the exact opposite. Disney crp all over the place, all of them are at best acceptable and those make the big money.

Total dollars are useless. Either adjust for inflation, or by total ticket sales. This list would change greatly based on ticket sales. The highest American film was Avengers Endgame, selling over 430 million admissions. Star War was 5th with 338 million.

Many should be considered not only in terms of inflation. The most important thing is the percentage of the viewing population.

Fun fact, according to multiple reports and film references, River Phoenix was reportedly James Cameron’s original choice to play Jack Dawson in Titanic before River Phoenix died in 1993. The role eventually went to Leonardo DiCaprio.

never had any desire to watch the super hero or comic book movies but I figured Titanic or Avatar would have been the top grossing.

If you adjust for inflation, Gone with the Wind is still the highest grossing movie of all time.

It’s crazy that most of all the top movies and all Top ips are all owned by Disney. They own Three big franchises that are known which is Marvel, Star Wars, and now Avatar since they bought 21 century fox in 2019. They literally own all the good IPs movies and characters.

Seeing The Force Awakens and the Avengers replace movies like The Godfather and Jaws really makes you think about how far we’ve fallen here

I don't see the point of these rankings if you don't factor in inflation (for example, the estimated gross revenue of Gone with the wind in 2026 US dollars is close to 4 billion)
