High vs. Low-Pressure Weather Systems: What’s the Difference?

Video Overview & Insights

In this video, we’ll explain the difference between high and low-pressure systems so that you can become a safer and more confident pilot.

Hopefully this video helps your written exam go from high pressure to low pressure. 😉

00:00 - Intro

I was hoping to learn what causes high and low pressure. Did I miss that part?

in the low pr picture doesn't the spin look like it is curiving to the left?

Best explanation of high and lows ever. Thanks so much.

It’s all about wind direction + ocean currents. The west coast especially gets a natural ‘cooling system’ most people overlook.

Got it…..low pressure no fly. High pressure I fly 😅

Bad wx is associated with low pressure systems because it picks up moisture. Moist air rising is unstable. High pressure the air descends. That air is dry because it already gave up its moisture when it was lifted. Dry air is generally stable air.

Opposite for me.. I've had physics and meteorology before but still do not get this video..

Does this mean that the stronger the heat, the more likely it is to occur in the future?

Great video. Way back when, Me & a few buddies went up in a Cessna 172. I was in right seat & a friend who also pilots was in the left seat that day. T/O was a 10 mile visibility range & no clouds-temp 82 degrees F. wind at 5mph from the west. We were going for a 2 hr. flight. After about 1&1/2 hrs. in, haze started in the west so we buggied back to the airport. This was about 2PM. By 5PM it was raining. Weather comes on fast.

The clouds in a low pressure system are convective and tend to build up during the day. The wind is often fresher and visibility out of cloud is good.
In a high pressure system they are stable and stratiform, and the winds are light with haze and reduced visibility.

Brilliant presentation, useful for sailors too. One factor you missed was the adiabatic heating of the air in a high pressure system. As the air descends it compresses, and that compression heats the dry air, and that is why high pressure systems are warm and dry. Thanks for your great work.

High Pressure is Happy Weather
Low Pressure is Lousy Weather

Greg lets play a game. Explained very nicely.
But i claim and dare you to find graphical error you have there. 🙂

Hi sir. I hope you're reading this, I just want you to know that I am very thankful because your videos are quite helpful not just for aviation students but also to us Science major students who are going to take our licensure exam. I hope this video can help more examinees.

Love this video, it took me a second to understand the "why" behind low and high, and then I remembered temperatures. Higher temps = lower pressure because the air is less dense, lower temps = high pressure because air is more dense. Heat expands/energizes molecules, but lower heat = less energized molecules so they are closer together. In laymans terms anyways lol

Does a high pressure system cause the air to sink, or does sinking air cause a high pressure system? Does a decrease in air temperature cause an increase in air pressure, or vice versa?

Wouldn't poor visibility and stratiform-type clouds usually be associated with high-pressure systems?

why is the YouTube videos information made by pilot institute better then his bullshit course ? I spent a lot of money for his course and his YouTube videos are better and FREE I think he's a scammer. you'll see these nice clean newer look information sign up for his course thinking you'll get a lot of information. Instead you get a lot of boring slide shows. DO NOT BUY HIS COURSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If low pressure causes instability because of rising air currents why doesn’t high pressure cause instability because of downward air currents? What am I missing?

doesnt the amount of sunlight that get into the surface effect on the temprature and atmosphere pressure? because in earth equator the sunlight gets there the most so theres low pressure weather system there most likely.. ? and in more north and south part of earth sunlight dont get there so theres high pressure.. ? sry english isnt my first language im also studying this for an exam i have

So Low pressure day's for Freeflight gliders, paraglider's but PPG pilots typically wanting smoother air should aim for the High pressure day's. The mixed up thinking process going from sport to sport.
