That "fact" is both a misinterpretation of what Hello Kitty's creator said and semantics to what he meant.
Hello Kitty is not a cat as in because she walks bipedal and talks but in the in same way Goofy isn't a dog like Pluto. But she is most definitely not a human. Typical American spin.
