Great white shark spotted next to paddleboarders off Cape Cod beach
Video Overview & Insights
Two teens were paddleboarding off a Cape Cod beach when a great white shark appeared just a few feet away. WBZ-TV's Brandon Truitt reports.
If they were paddling so fast one of them broke their paddles, that's not staying calm. That panic motion could have drawn the shark in. If your in the water and you see a shark, your supposed to try and stay calm. Don't panic. Panicking could lead to a shark biting you. If you act like prey, a shark can treat you like prey. But, that shark was definitely not interested in them. It just kept on its way. Sharks don't hunt humans.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat" ...
@joec3546Why exactly is this news worthy? I thought everyone knew, sharks live in the ocean, am I missing something??
@meganmbleedThere are videos online demonstrating this: If you hang off the board, get in the water so they can see you, they will know you aren't a seal and generally they will leave you alone. If you stay up on the board, trying to somehow hide your presence, they will see - looking from below - an outline of something tapered at both ends, sometimes with little fins sticking out, kind of like like a resting seal. A nice big one. They will circle the board and try to figure out just what the heck that thing is. Which would you prefer?
Bottom line? Predators are unpredictable.
A bird is on the fence in my yard. A fly is flying around the sidewalk. I can see a squirrel in the tree, across the street. Amazing!!! The lasiest new reporters since the being of news exist in this generation.
@waynerusin7480😂😂😂
@Danielle-ii8zcWait…a shark in the ocean!? When that shark walks onto the beach and attacks a sunbather, that’s the only time the shark should make the news…
@Odhege8262Who else recognizes the whole fake persona New England vibe of "hey are we doing this right?". Lack of authenticity and self knowledge.
@nextariThey stayed calm and didnt panic, yet paddled so fast one broke her paddle? And had no time for thought? Uhhhh, that sounds like panic to me.
@robertmurphy3915love the curly hair.
@zoso73The story doesn't insinuate that the girls or the shark were doing anything wrong. It's just a story about a shark siting, so just enjoy it.
@The_Real_HankWhen you are in their world, common sense will show you the way….or not..
@bobrod5834Do these people watch the news or TV? There are GW sharks all over the Cape Cod area. I wouldn't go in that water on a bet.
@birage9885Nice try, careful, look at your state laws as those teens might be just girls at this point.
@petermelville5524imagine seeing a shark in the ocean. 😂
@deangood6682I wish we would all stop saying "like" all the time.
@newtonsommelierIf you’re gonna go in the ocean, get a boat get a damn boat - a big boat. With a paddle board you’re asking for trouble.
@animaljustice7774"Falmouth is a summer town. And we need summer dollars."
@clemdaneI always knew Jaws would return!
@mikehunt-fx7sfNear Cape Cod but says it's RARE. 😂🤦♀️
@amandabelleville7369Your going to need a bigger board.
@stixplayerWell, if the shark wanted ' her' it would have taken her. It did NOT. As usual, humans ethnocentric perspective clouds the real issues. In any case realize a fast shark can swim 50 feet in TWO seconds...😊
@adamfindlay7091Madeline paddled so fast she broke her oar. How is that staying calm? Worst thing to do is trigger the shark by splashing and fleeing I thought. I would have freaked out also though.
@TheNickhammondHell no!
@funkycat251Your in their territory.. God put the fish . Sharks whales.. all creatures that need to live in water that’s their home .. your a visitor or intruder. Ppl yell shark shark!! The shark yells ppl ppl !!!
@user-shea777Stay out of the ocean!!!!
@misguidedangel6550😮
@master-kq3nwNo one should go in shark water
@deedeerouse419They live there🦈
@VW613Its their habitat. We swim with them everyday. See, thats the problem with the world today. Disinformation. Create fears, to create hate, to blame a false ennemy. This is dangerous. Not the shark!!
@miadoser1402That shark wants nothing to do with her. Looking for a seal. If the Great White is swimming with dorsal fin out is not in predation mode, just scouting. Great Whites are ambush predators. They submerge and come up forcefully.
@Nittanylions1972Wow that’s crazy
@AlizabethMartinez-j2tIf you don’t know by now, all Massachusetts beaches are flooded with sharks. Keep that in mind. 🦈
@elpadrinobaby1902WE are guests in their home...
@mandyb0725Seriously, you're not a smart person kayaking or certainly paddle boarding in the ocean. I feel like I need a bigger boat every time I go out. Your SERIOUSLY asking to be "tasted".
@PatternRecognition-f3cDUH! Do not paddle board in the shark's home.
@skytechbitsNewsflash! Sharks live in the ocean!
@MsRollingstone11Everyone know the Great Whites are out there!
@CatherinePhillips-e6cIt’s crazy how many sharks they’re seeing in the ocean lately…
@Kaaaattt06Imagine.. A shark in the water. Shocking
@D84-m2lThe experts always say that these kind of shark sightings are "rare," yet we hear about these each summer. I'm sure that these girls would conclude that they would not want to be that "rare" case again should they encounter sharks again in the water. Any "rare" case is too often for me. The only body of water in which I will immerse myself is a bathtub and occasionally a swimming pool.
@frenchfan3368😂😂share the ocean 😂😂
@jomohector5274Uh HELL no I won't be going back after that
@ScottBlackulaShould have listen to Chief Brody!
@EllisonLowrimore-y8hShould we let her know that ‘going back into the water’ just might not be the best idea?
@missmew5240We need Quint!
@nicholasschroeder3678Who would have thought, a 🦈 would have been in the water. 😂😂😂
@tracybutcher2572I only swim out to waist deep. Going into the deep ocean parts is crazy
@Radiodaze1073Mrs. Brodie must be in town
