As president of The Recording Academy, which organises the Grammy Awards, Panos A. Panay is grappling with how artificial intelligence and streaming is transforming the music industry, often at the expense of artists.
Musicians have outsources their trade to machines and AI. They did it to themselves out of necessity. One pedal eliminates both the drummer and bass player. Another vocal pedal eliminates background singers. What is left is one person that will soon be replaced by AI all together. AI has progressed very rapidly, writing and singing songs and producing all the background music. It is certainly not yet a finished product, but if it has advanced this much in only a few years, what will it be capable of in ten years if the trend continues? There are only a small fraction of venues that provide live music at the local and State level. I detest where all this is going, but the realist in me simply can't deny the impending demise of the musician. Those who maintain that AI will never replace human creativity should preach it to all the unemployed musicians in the world who were replaced by AI. Creativity is a poor replacement for food. Rest assured, BBC. AI will also replace you in the near future.
A former agent who worked with the likes of Leonard Cohen and Nina Simone, Panos spoke on Radical with Amol Rajan about his love of music and how that led to him becoming one of the most influential figures in the industry.
And against the backdrop of record-breaking tours from Beyonce and Taylor Swift, he reflects on why the next generation of artists like Sabrina Carpenter are forging real connections with audiences through live performances.
He's an industry pleb that's paid by the record labels to inflate their roster sales. You can literally hear him redacting his own thoughts. Next time interview someone with some backbone.

I think he makes a strong point about disclosure. AI-generated music is here, whether people like it or not, but as listeners we have a right to know when music is AI-generated.
Obviously it gets more complicated when AI is used only for certain elements, a vocal, sound design, effects, etc. But that’s different from music that’s fully generated by prompts or is essentially 100% AI.
And if AI producers want to defend this as a legitimate art form (which many do), then surely they should be willing to stand behind it and be transparent about what they’re making, not obscure it.

Artists should be able to upload music behind a paywall for fans who wants early access to music and then it can become available after a month or two. Don’t know logistically how that would work but an idea

@aadeenoIt’s a scary thought that we could be listening to hit songs and feeling deep emotions for artists who don’t even exist outside of a computer server. If we let AI flood the market just to save streaming companies from paying royalties, we’re going to kill off the very human creativity that makes music worth listening to in the first place.

It could and probably will effect countless facets of music. #1 it will twice or three times as likely push people further away from picking up and learning a real musical instrument and #2, the " originality" of a real artist will be gone, and you can't never replace originality with AI and I don't care how good AI will get - the originality of a real human artist are " ideas", which means, the way it's written, the way it's played, the way it's sang and the way it's composed.

The best part of a Concert is seeing the artists play their individual instruments.
Popular music has been muzak for over 20 years. Generic, tuneless dirges, devoid of artistry, soul and inspiration. A handful of automaton producers behind it and AI is indistinguishable from these generic dullards, it just creates tons of the same. It can copy well but not create well. This guy being interviewed even speaks like a robot.

What's wrong with an artist using AI to write the songs and then play them live in real?
I way prefer AI music to the over-wash of Cover and tribute artists (who get treated with an unfair bias over originals). At least you can get good original music instead of a multi-multi-re covered hit!
Plus, working with AI music also helps people learn and experiment with other styles & genres outside of their comfort zone!

Ai is ruining a lot of things.
Copyright is based on rarity, but AI is the extinction of rarity. AI doesn't monetize 'property', it monetizes Attention and Flow. Netflix, Spotify and the big sync corporations don't need you to own the copyright. They need content that keeps the user captive. If AI generates 'ownerless' music, the big platforms will be the first to profit, eliminating the middleman (the human artist) who demanded a percentage. 'Lack of copyright' is, in fact, the biggest gift given to big corporations, not a protection for you. The lobby of billions of dollars invested in AI will rewrite the definition of 'author' much faster than you can read a sentence. The law follows technology, not the other way around. By the time your court reaches a final conclusion, the music industry will have already been terraformed by AI. You will have legal 'justice' in a world where your music no longer has any economic value.
