Well, not really sure what the truth of the story really is, if it was that Michael drowned or got killed by some kind of wild animal, as that was certainly possible, but if it had been that he was slain by that tribe, then the tribe only proved that they were the savages that people thought they were, as if they just didn't want to sell him the statues, then they could have done that, without having to resort to such drastic measures.
