It's crazy to think that I made this and then a month went by before I finally decided to post it because I wasn't sure anyone would relate. I'm glad I did - thank you for all of your wonderful comments. Let's stop beating ourselves up so much.

— @nathanieldrew

Sharing some motivation and perspective on something a lot of us have in common. These are words that I'd like the lost and confused Nathaniel to hear sometimes.

“Behind” doesn’t actually exist because life is always in a state of flux and we never know what people are battling behind closed doors. People with high status in a lucrative career who are in relationships / married may actually be batting addiction behind the scenes or on their way to burnout. A loved one may pass in the next year, they may lose their job and the relationship may fall apart. I don’t wish these things on people but it is life. Things do collapse, which is why comparison is so futile. It’s a binary game at a moving target. Look at nature and the change in seasons. If you are in a period of darkness, and stay committed to listening to your body, showing up with small habits, this state cannot last forever. You are not behind. You are exactly where you need to be.

People admire the poor man with a talent in a suit. While the talented man has $2 and has rationed food for weeks. Hows that for feeling behind? It's only what you desire, not having less.

everyone in my circle cleared that one exam but me... I try not to get jealous, they're my homies but it stings when I see them talking about what college will they choose while I'll spend another year studying in the same damn room with no social life but again, it's on me for not clearing the exam in first attempt. I just want to stop existing. Never thought I'd cry about my life in some comment section under a 7 years old video haha

I used to hate myself. It had lot to do with how I was raised and how my wishes and desires were downplayed. Someone once told me that I had to sacrifice all the fun I could have just to be something in life. But I was so unaware that I thought I had to perform and earn approval and love of the people in my life. When that curtain fell I didn’t know what to do with my life anymore. I was always driven and always chasing something, hoping that it lands and I can finally become someone that is allowes to receive love and appreciation. But when clarity hit, I was devastated, I didn’t have to go through all that and become a poster child for "success" that this world talks about. I didn’t need anyone to love me in exchange for the sacrifices I made for them, it turned out all I needed was to love myself and know myself so that I know what I want in my life and what I don't. What I don't want is for someone to acknowledge the performance, what I want is to be more grounded and to be able to experience life without feeling like I don't deserve it. I deserve to live, that's why I was born, not so that I can give away parts of myself to make others feel whole. I have understood with enough pain and suffering that I am not responsible for every dysfunctional people in my life and serve as a regulating function to theirs, I am responsible for my own actions and that’s it.

I feel this way about everything. For example, if I stop drawing for a week, I don't want to go back to it; I feel like I'm falling behind. Or if I stop playing a game for two months and don't play it again, I feel like I'm falling behind. I don't want to experience this feeling; it's painful to do something. It's difficult, and your childhood friends succeeded at it twenty years ago. I just remembered what was holding me back, but saying it is easier than doing it. Ignoring this feeling is easy to say, but doing it is like pulling a hair from dough.

This video really spoke to me. The feeling of being “behind” is something so many of us quietly carry.
I recently made a short, calm reflection on this same idea—about not falling behind in life.

I'm 30, i feel so alone in life since my mother passed away 13 years ago and it's like she was the only one who had love and care for me. I make music and i'm pursuing a lawyers degree but it's like life's fighting my progress, i feel stuck in the same place like it's a barrier i cannot cross. People i love and give my best to end up takin' me for weak and i eventually let 'em go, i don't feel like i belong anywhere and i'm exhausted of grieving for my own self, it's HARD but i vowed to give myself my best so i can at least feel worthy of my own love and respect.

The history that you told about the director had an impact on me similar to what you had. I often think that people are doing and feeling much better than me, especially when I think of people who once were part of my life but now aren't. Sometimes my life just feels blank, there's some peace to it, i guess. At least I'm not making the life of anyone worse.
A famous teacher here in Brazil once said a definition to happiness that stuck with me, "happiness is every moment that we wanted to last forever", even though i feel behind multiple times in the day, remembering to focus on the literal moment that im living, paying attention to what I'm seeing, hearing and feeling, helps me to remember that life can be simple, that life can feel light, even for people like me, not every moment that i live i want to last forever, some i want to never had happen, but moments that bring us happiness (by this definition) actually accours mutiple times, maybe the sky was beautiful, you had a good 30 second conversation, the taste of your food was good, seeing the leaves on a tree dancing with the wind, i think that is what people mean when they say that we can find happiness in simple things.
I saved your video on my watch later list to watch when this feeling caught up to me again, it was worth it. Amazing work.

I'm 21 .I live with my parents. I just graduated college so I am unemployed currently .
I've struggled with anxiety and depression for years in my own way I'm constantly fretting about everything, I overthink, I'm full of existential dread. I've had OCD but I've (mostly) overcame it. I suspect I have ADHD.

I wanted to be cricketer. Now that thst dream’s over. I’m trying so hard to even just get up and do something meaningful .My dreams are dying, I'm growing older...and I'm losing my will to keep carrying .
The problems:

I'm overall losing my will to do...anything. I can't focus. I'm constantly distracted. Getting myself to do anything that requires mental effort is just like torture. Even just writing, which was once a joyous little activity, just feels like work. Everything feels like work. Even writing this post feels like work.
...But when I'm not working, my mind guilt trips me for not doing enough. Just tells me I'm wasting all my time with Netflix or games or social media. I can't even enjoy myself anymore. Just a big voice in my head saying, "WHY AREN'T YOU WORKING ON YOUR DREAMS?"
I wanted to be a filmmaker as a teenager but that dream is just dying this slow, agonizing death. I can hardly motivate myself to finish any scripts, I feel like everything I make is bad, not to mention the film industry requires a lot of social interaction (which I'm bad at) and brutal working conditions (16 hour days are normalized). The state of the economy makes things even worse.
Occasionally, I have panic attacks, like when I almost lost my job I started screaming and crying...while my manager was on the phone. I regret this. It makes me feel like a child.
My father was CONVINCED when I was younger that I was destined to be this incredible person because I showed above-average talent at my age. He still kind of is, I think he just wants to believe his daughter isn't a massive loser. I actually believed it for awhile, convinced I was destined for greatness...now the real world is catching up.
Most jobs I get make me want to kill myself. That is not hyperbole. I know most people work jobs they hate, that I should just grow up and accept reality. But really, if this is all the world has to fucking offer, I don't want to live.
I cannot stop worrying, fretting all the time. It's this horrible addiction I have. When I'm not worrying my brain just finds another thing to worry about. I feel uncomfortable not worrying.
I'm increasingly spending more and more time in my head, daydreaming complicated and vivid fantasies, where I'm successful, have a boyfriend, going on adventures, etc. I miss out on important details, forget tasks, and procrastinate.
I'm overall just...sick of everything. Nothing really surprises me anymore, every new "trend" just seems annoying, I've cared less and less about what other people think and all the stupid shit the world wants me to care about.
I think of Death, is it an easier solution.? Idk I feel like I’ll die a loser.

I am a 34-year-old man working in the IT industry at a senior position, earning a good 7-figure income. But my life wasn’t always like this. I come from one of the poorest backgrounds and grew up in a tier-2 town. My family struggled financially throughout my childhood, and we didn’t have our own house until 2020. My parents, my two siblings, and I lived in a small chawl for many years.

When I started working in 2013 with a salary of just ₹16K monthly, I took full responsibility for the family because my father couldn’t work due to medical issues. I worked extremely hard and eventually bought a house for my family in 2020. I repaid the loan in 2–3 years after I began earning several lakhs per month.

However, in the process of building a career and improving my family’s life, I forgot to live my own life. I have never been in a relationship. Before 2020, I had very low confidence because of my family’s situation, and after COVID I suffered from anxiety for almost 3 years.

Now financially everything is stable, but emotionally I feel very lonely. I want to be in a relationship, but I feel like the time has passed and maybe it’s no longer possible. This feeling kills me. When I feel lonely, I end up drinking alcohol, and then I feel even worse because it only increases the loneliness.

How can I gain confidence, enjoy my life again, and eventually find a good partner? I really want to work on myself now, but I don’t know where to start. Please advice 🙏
