Finding a Job in 2026 is AWFUL

Video Overview & Insights

I'm back on the job hunt after about 8 months. I thought it would be easier than the last couple go arounds. Unfortunately, job searching is still a misserable process. Between the repetitiveness of submitting applications, to the turbulance in the tech world, it's beginning to feel like there is no end in sight.

Got a job through a recruiter to work at a warehouse, the recruiter called me 2 weeks into the job bc i had a 2 week gap in my work history from 5 YEARS AGO and immediately demanded I send him an updated resume explaining said gap 😂🤣 like bro, I already got the job! What, you gonna fire me over a tiny gap in my work history from 5 years ago? This is prob why they wanna use AI so much in the recruitment process, so you get flagged and dumped for simply being honest on your resume.. what in george Orwell's name even is the reality we're living in? 💀

I know this is an unpopular idea - and it’s a rough gig - but being a teacher has lots of opportunities and stability. I retired from the military in 2012 and became a Special Education Teacher. This career is losing people in droves, and most districts are rife with unfilled vacancies. I started at 49 years old in this field - and whenever I apply my phone rings off the hook - even after I accept a job. It’s not that I am the Bee’s Meow or the cat’s knees - it’s just that school districts are that desperate! I love my job (and yes, it is a tough one) but it beats the nonsense you may be dealing with now - AND depending on your state has a pension. Something to at least look into.

8:08 Cam's Tips on Job Hunting

Gen X’r here: I remember a Rodney Dangerfield movie from the 80’s called “Back to School”. At the end, Rodney Dangerfield’s character is giving a graduation address and he says, “As you graduate and go out into the real world, my advice to you is: DON’T GO!!! It’s rough out there! Move back in with your parents and let them deal with it!” This was meant as comedy, but it is now so true to life it is no longer funny. I still have grown kids at home (1 who boomeranged). I feel terrible for young people starting out today…

idk why people with terrible resumes sit here on youtube bitching about how bad the market is. like dude just go fix your resume, there's millions of free resources online for how to increase your qualifications. this isn't rocket science. stop whining, act like an adult.

12:48 "2,4,6 years of extra schooling you've done..." Oh my sweet summer child. I had perfect grades all the way until graduation, then I did 6 years of University, which was supposed to be 5 but I got delayed because of covid restrictions, then I did 2 years of an extra university program to qualify me for the exact job I was looking for, and I'm probably gonna be doing another 2 year university course again very soon. So to me it's more like 10 years plus the grind before that already. My job seeking experience: 50 emails per day: 2 replies, both negative. They don't have qualified people in that domain either, but all these positions are filled with friends and it's entirely corrupt so I don't get an opportunity ever.

Looking for a job is horrific. I'm currently in a role I don't enjoy at all, but I enjoy it slightly more than applying for job. It's like pulling teeth!

You missed a trick. My town is now flooded with Indians who work in IT and work for (to us) low wages that are high compared to India. Companies can hire older Indians with experience at the same wage as a fresh out of college native. So natives never get a foot in the door.

Ugh, I hate applying through workday..

I have a four year degree, ten years experience in SEO/web dev and I can't get hired. The interview process is chatting to some 20-year old, immature girl that knows nothing about the position and judges me anyways. Am at the point of starting my own business in town instead. The process is worse than my dating years.

I worked for several years at a well respected pro services firm as a revenue generating white collar professional, servicing numerous clients. My resume and professional background are objectively superior. That’s why when I was let go from my job for reasons beyond my performance, I expected to land on my feet in relatively short order - maybe take a few months to travel/recharge before hitting the office again. Not the case. It actually took well over a year, dozens of late round interviews, and probably on the order of thousands of applications to find my next role.

I consider myself one of the lucky ones, because numerous recruiters told me my resume stands out. It really shouldn’t be this damn hard to find a job.

@John-vp2jq

There has to be a job out there for me. I see so many huge homes and nice cars. Where are these people working and what are they doing to make this kind of money? If you go out during the day there is traffic and I am like where and when do all these people work?

I FUCKING HATE WORKDAY. And yes, having to redo that same application process for each company that uses the platform is so insulting. Having to rewrite the resume through workday has been draining. And all of that effort just to get a three paragraph form response.

25 years as a programmer (Python / Perl ) Many IT certifications. I have submitted over job 1700 applications on Linkedin the last 12 months. Only had one interview. Still no job. The job market is the worst I have ever seen. I probably have close to 1000 rejection emails. Employers are using AI and only want to hire someone that has 100% match of the job requirements.

@teslacoil

Couple months late into this video but between AI, HB1 visa and offshoring having “tech” skills no longer means being employed. You will go through what everyone else has gone through. My brother who thought none of this would ever touch him is FO. No one cares about his experience and fancy degrees.

I've been a developer (client/server, web api and services) for 25+ years and I couldn't find a job FOR ANYTHING! Maybe it's because of my age, or what but I'VE NEVER HAD TO FIGHT THIS HARD FOR A N Y T H I N G! The job I'm stuck with is 40% less of my salary now and trying to get a better job is BRUTAL.
One hint: I've had to pivot to data engineering and yes do sql youtube classes but also know excel and VLOOKUP BUT try to pickup PYTHON and PANDAS. Python is a growing thing, and I've used AI (ChatGPT and ClaudeAI) to do literally everything.. It takes some "learning" like setting up a prompts, it's basically "in lieu of" programming, and then seeing if it worked or not and what you need to "fix" it. THAT way.. ChatGPT gives you the python/panda code AND then you learn how to study the PYTHON/PANDA code and you can start coding on your own.

Who cares about a degree these days? Degrees, any kind, are worthless. These days, companies are looking for workers with extensive experience, and even your master craftsman's certificate won't help you there.

one thing I'd like to mention about the workforce, is that from personal experience.
if you're White, then any job who's hiring process is more than: send application, get call from hr on if you can work starting next Monday. it means you're never getting the job, as they can afford being picky and use DEI, meaning they'll never pick a white guy, over any other race. so if you do have to answer the race question on an application, eitheir say "prefer not to say" or pick israeli/jewish, as those seem to be the only ones that are somewhat given a pass. and in general, if you have some part of the familly, that isn't native to the country, use that to your advantage.
and more in general, even if you've got a diploma, anything that isn't physical/menial, won't hire you unless you have experience, so a good way to get set up in the meantime, is to look for any kind of "low strata job", such as dishwasher at a restaurant or a night job as a security guard or any kind of high turn over rates, long hours, low paying jobs, as it's the area where the applications aren't already taken by ethnic hiring/nepotism.

@isuckatusernames4297

I literally thought I was the only one going through this … applying for a job is mental torture… I truly feel like we’re are going through abuse …

At least you get rejection letters. Half the time they can't be bothered sending an automated email.
This has been a growing problem for the past half a century, because of outsourcing entire industries; it's no coincidence there was a sudden push for ai after the tariffs went up either.
Don't forget the ghost job problem either, they're effectively legalized phishing scams; the company sells your data without your consent knowledge or credit without ever hiring you.
Why can't we change anything? Unionbusting & at-will employment laws, both disproportionately empowered companies to effectively enslave their workers through coercion & extortion.

I understand that with social media, we are seeing a lot of videos on how difficult it is to get a job, keep a job, or be fired, but honestly, I remember when I was coming up, and it wasn't easy back then either. Generally, it is not easy to get a good job when you are starting out in your career.

its worse if youre in a small town, i applied at car dealerships (where the money is at unfortunately), trucking companies (apparently military experience doesnt count with them), truck repair companies as a porter, a high turnout job, and all of them basically never reached out or was a issue they had with my family previously, something ive had no control or idea about till after i got out the military.
I applied with the FAA during their very brief window they were accepting applications and got in and passed my test but im going to be waiting at least a year and a half for them to even look at and approve (or deny) my medical. But in that time my bills still arent getting paid outside of what i get through the VA so im still hopping through hoops looking for employment. I went as far as applying for the TSA, did the interview, got asked questions that didnt apply to the job at all... "star questions" of all things, didnt make the cut despite them hurting for people, and me actually being relatively qualified for the job.
At this point im actually considering waiving all of my benefits to go back into the military for employment im quite literally between a rock and a hard place and running out of options

This was inevitable. Why do you think billionaires were so quick to jump on the Trump train? It wasn't just taxes. With the creation of AI they want to absolutely brutalize the rights of working class Americans and Trump was their tool to do so. Rolling out AI COULD have been a good thing, but they needed to protect the American worker while doing it. Instead they just fired everyone and destroyed tons of entry level jobs with no penalty. When Trump won I told EVERYONE you better have at least $120,000 in savings. If you don't then you are cooked. I was called a libtard but here we are. Thankfully, I am in a position where I am not hurt by these changes because I prepped for it, but many people unfortunately walked face first into it. It hasn't even gotten REALLY bad yet. Wait until GDP goes negative and the housing market completely collapses. There are at least 10 things that are coming that are going to destroy the economy for good.

I burnt out on filling workday applications years ago. It'd be one thing if it was ONE workday login you could use across multiple sites that use them. But it's not. And I'm not willing to keep track of 87 different logins that I have to update or remove at a later date if my situation or contact info changes.

It really is a mess out there.

Finding a job isn't suppose to be fun. It's suppose to be such a grind that you never want to do it again. Also I don't care if H.R has to go through 500 resumes, That's their job. I can't have A.I cook everyone's meal, why should they get paid so much more to have A.I do the work.
