For better or worse, what tyler taught him progressively thru the movie was how living is done. Norton was just not living.

@lilianmarchot5493The film Fight Club (1999) tells the story of an unnamed Narrator — an insurance agent suffering from an existential crisis, insomnia, and a sense of alienation in a consumer society. His life is a rut: office work, furnishing his apartment with IKEA furniture, and a lack of genuine emotions and meaning. On the doctor’s advice, he starts attending support groups for people with serious illnesses (such as testicular cancer) to see “real suffering” and compare it with his own problems. There, he meets Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter) — a woman who, like him, pretends to be ill to become part of these groups. They try to avoid each other, but their encounters increase his inner tension, and his insomnia returns.
After another business trip, the Narrator meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) on a plane — a charismatic, eccentric man who makes and sells soap. Upon returning home, the Narrator discovers that his apartment has been destroyed by a gas main explosion. In despair, he turns to Tyler for help, and Tyler invites him to live with him — in an old, dilapidated house on a vacant lot.
Tyler is the complete opposite of the Narrator: he is a rebel who rejects material values and social norms. He lives an unusual life and pulls provocative stunts: for example, while working as a projectionist, he inserted short pornographic scenes into family films, and as a waiter, he spat and urinated into customers’ dishes. Tyler pushes the Narrator towards radical actions. After a meal at a bar, he asks the Narrator to hit him, and the latter agrees. This is how their underground fight club begins — a place where men can vent their aggression and find an illusion of meaning in life.
The club quickly gains popularity and soon evolves into a network of anarchic cells called Project Mayhem. The members start engaging in vandalism and sabotage as a protest against consumer society. The Narrator is frightened by the radicalisation of the movement and gradually distances himself from the club’s activities.
After a fierce argument and a car accident, Tyler disappears from the Narrator’s life. When one of the club members, Bob (Meat Loaf), dies during a Project assignment, the Narrator decides to stop the subversive activities. Tracing Tyler’s steps, he discovers fight clubs in all major cities across the country. To his surprise, the club members mistake him for Tyler.
A key plot twist occurs when the Narrator calls Marla. She confirms his guess: Tyler is himself — his alter ego, a projection of repressed desires and suppressed emotions. Tyler explains that he takes over the Narrator’s body when the latter is asleep. Thus, all of Tyler’s actions, including the destruction of the apartment, were carried out by the Narrator himself.
The protagonist finds out that Tyler plans to destroy major financial corporations through bombings. While trying to defuse the planted explosives, the Narrator confronts Tyler, who, at gunpoint, leads him to the top floor of a building to demonstrate the power of the upcoming explosions. Realising that he and Tyler share the same body, the Narrator shoots himself in the mouth. The bullet passes through his cheek but pierces Tyler’s skull. The alter ego dies, and the Narrator achieves personal unity.
In the finale, members of Project Mayhem drag the kidnapped Marla to the Narrator. Holding hands, they watch through huge windows as skyscrapers — symbols of America’s financial power — collapse. The Narrator utters the line: “We met at a strange time in my life.”
The film explores themes of identity crisis, consumerism, toxic masculinity, and inner conflict. Tyler Durden is interpreted as the Jungian archetype of the Shadow — the repressed and denied aspects of the self. The film’s ending symbolises not only the destruction of illusory structures but also the protagonist’s attainment of selfhood through accepting and assimilating his “shadow”.
Those who even hate Edward Norton, make this movie his exemption, that's how good it is.
