F1 Timing admits system errors in Monaco by Peter Windsor

Video Overview & Insights

The Alpine F1 team on Thursday brilliantly launched a protest against the five-second penalty imposed upon Pierre Gasly in the Monaco GP, delivering bombshell evidence - sensationally confirmed by FOM - that the distance used in calculating the F1 Official Timing (and, hence, the pit lane speed) was indeed inaccurate. The Monaco Stewards, furthermore, on the same day revealed that, upon asking Race Control during the Monaco GP if they were aware of any issues or irregularities in the system (based on the unusual number of drivers apparently speeding), they were reassured that there were none. Peter Windsor in this video highlights the clear-thinking drive of Alpine's Steve Nielsen and his engineering team that may well result in Pierre Gasly reclaiming P3 at Monaco (plus other potential race result changes around other drivers similarly penalised) and - obviously - much-needed revisions to the timing-loop and penalty systems.

Don’t recall formula e having these issues

Aren't we all glad Ferrari didn't do what SOME suggested and keep Charles out or swap positions to give Charles P2. Would have been a massive slap in the face to Lewis and put the team in turmoil right now

Honestly pretty smart to race normally and simply add the penalty once the race was over

They have an in one in excess of 8 billion $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ can't get the basics right.
Tarmac surface broke up causing the crashes at the corner. Speed limit sensors not calibrated correctly.
The map showing race progress crashed during race never fixed.
They can't even get a few supermarket floor cleaning deployed at all the corners in car of debris or excess water from rain to be cleared pronto rather than stopping the race for long periods of time while men with only hand brooms try to clear the track. It does not stop here either there are now so many thousands of rules it is almost impossible to just race.

Since different drivers served their penalty in different ways, it is impossible to reallocate the results; the only solution the FIA has is to cancel the whole event, and, of course, pay a substantial fine for bringing the sport into disrepute.

Nick: you're with us always:

The corrupted 2021 season was for me the start of this rapid rot in F1, every season since there appears to have been more and more issues with overbearing governance, behind the scenes contrivance and manipulation of what was an almost pure sporting challenge, to becoming now this farcical serialised soap opera of so called 'entertainment'.
Yes I still follow on the side lines but no longer watch any racing as that purity is lost!

Hi Peter, I love your videos. Great content. I was F1 pitlane marshall Singapore GP for 5years. I knew there had to be something wrong at Monaco. I even wonder if their speed gun was properly calibrated. The regulations also needs to be redone, in my opinion. I heard on a podcast, Rob Smedley saying that Lewis has exceeded the speed limit by 0.5 km/hour. There should be a small tolerance. Such a tiny margin makes no sense at all. What a mess.

Why weren't cars signalled as 'Speeding in the pit lane' during the three hours of free practice?

F1 2026: terrible "get the mushroom" racing cars, fake overtakes, tarmac breaking up, wrong timing. I am following the scene but not actively watching anymore. The sport has been destroyed by an incompetent board.

@midasracer

Are they all incompetent, or did they just lie that they weren't aware of any problems?

@rudevectors8018

didnt george have a drive through for not serving his 5s. probably the most affected driver.

@edwz250

Would there not be a data recording system on the cars that holds accurate and verifiable data of the absolute speed at any time during the event? Comparing that data to the official speed measuring system data would be enlightening.

@PiDsPagePrototypes

How pathetic. Monaco is already a farce of a race every year and the most boring 70 laps in the history of racing. And they mess something up as simple as that? Ruined multiple drivers "races"

@Bilson420
@

Mercedes if George went through the pits normally different race. They failed to adhere so that reason is correct.

@fastpace101
@

They can't fix last race without creating a bigger problem (George, Piastri etc) so it's gonna be what it is, can only hope future races won't have the same problem.

It was obvious that with so many timing issues that the system was forked.
Effing one isn't the pinnacle, changing the changes to the motor regulations in 6 months shows the incompetence of Ben Sulkymans regime my mate says .

@tangerinedream7211

listening to the race live. it was absolutely obvious that there was an issue with the pitlane speed monitoring process. You don't get so many penalties being dished out.

The FIA need to amend the rules so any pit speeding penalties are properly investigated when they occur (i.e. during the race) & if the measuring system is deemed inaccurate, the penalties are waived / scrubbed.

Also, these cars are carrying a formidable array of sensors & data loggers - is it seriously beyond the capabilities of the FIA to cross reference their data against the GPS speed data from the teams in the pitlane zone?

Or go back to the old school & have someone in the pit lane with a speed gun.

I used to be an ardent F1 fan, watching everything from start to finish, reading F1 magazines and more. I stopped after Lewis Hamilton was robbed of his championship because of the FIA balls up, and those balls ups are still going on. It's a complete farse.

There was clearly a problem ALL weekend, right from FP1 wrt this pitlane speeding issue.

Why did teams wait until AFTER the race to do something about it instead of nipping it in the bud on Friday FP1 already?

@matvar187
@

Yet again the FIA Stewards and officials rig a race through sheer incompetence and not understanding the regs. When will there be accountability.

@TbonePlummer
@

The other spineless and/or dumb teams did not protest, they are out of time so that is the end of it. The only alternative would be to void the race. So Gasly will deservedly get his 3rd place.

@ChrisVanLennep

They should just give the 5 or 10 seconds back and revise the standings for all. It's not ideal but the best of a bad job. It didn't affect the win which saved their blushes to some extent.

@ab8jeh
@

after the third penalty, it was the one time the FIA should have said they’d review the incidents after the race. But I suppose they’re so ‘straightforward’ normally that there is no reviewing to be done. Yet they’ll delay other seemingly obviious penalties until after the race that need to be dealt with quickly..

@MrKlawUK
@

Why aren't they using the car's real time data and telemetry

@raybrown2197
@

Gasly is not getting the podium back Peter, because it affects the other cars too namely Russell and Hamilton the big ones here and others too. Don't expect the result to be overturned they are just going to issue a directive etc of some sense for the future time keeping that's it.
