I would have wanted the surface dungeon but making it as the entrypoint where its maze-like that can lead down to various path where one path for the portal room others are dead end or trapped or just treasure rooms, you can still use the eye's of ender to locate the entrance and stuff it would make exploring the dungeons more fun than digging untill you find it
