Europe’s least capitalist capital | Business Beyond
Video Overview & Insights
Berlin is Germany’s capital, but not its economic powerhouse. Unlike most capital cities that drive national growth, Berlin barely moves the needle. In fact, if you removed Berlin from Germany, the country’s GDP per capita would stay the same. In this episode of Business Beyond, we explore the surprising economics of Berlin—and how its unique history with capitalism helps explain why it bucks the trend.
France everything is centralized in paris- italy/germany are decentralized. I prefer the italian and german model much more- take ile de france from france and france dies

The Potsdamer Platz problems look a lot like the Hudson Yard's development problems in New York City. Building it doesn't mean people will come.

This is decentralization, and is actually good for the country

0:31 I am sorry but this totally misleading. Germanys total gross GDP would definitely be lower without Berlin, and also die GDP per capita (that is actually shown in the graphic) would be lower in all of Germany without Berlin according to newer statistics. Berlins GDP grows faster than the rest of the country.

It’s because Germany have a healthy industry! Look at that chart and the countries that these capitals belong to.
01:30 Between capitalism and counterculture
02:45 Berlin before reunification
I visited Berlin in 1993. It was indeed sehr kool. But, basically, all that cool, hip living back then left the city with a pile of public debts to this very day because few folks were productive enough to pay for it all and the state had to borrow money to prop up all that cheap, cool living. Now, capitalism and gentrification — and the more productive folks who came along with it — have generated more taxes to pay for it all and help pay down yesteryear’s public debts. Got it.

"Take Berlin out of Germany and its GDP essentially would not change". This is not true - Berlin accounts for 5% of Germany's GDP according to Eurostat.

NONSENSE.
People (and DW) are not aware on what economic statistiscs are based.
When it comes to corporations it is the location where a company is REGISTERED.
When some company has its legal seat in say Paris, then that does NOT mean that value is generated there.
18:51 Where is Berlin headed?

I just watched a video from @radicalLiving, who promoted Germany 🇩🇪 for the longest time, he finally had enough and he’s moving out of Germany. The country is going down

When I first moved to Berlin I went to see an apartment near potsdamer platz.. this is over 10yrs ago. It was brand new apartments and I had been living in Bavaria.. I immediately saw it was not for me. Sterile and not a neighbourhood. I went to east Berlin and it was the best decision.

I moved to Berlin in 1995, saw it grow, opened a restaurant until it died, and watched the city go down the drain after 2008. Now I live here but also in California. That works.

Berlin was always a great city. Now everything is getting expensive and will take away from being an exciting city. New York was a great city and is now unafortable. I lived in both cities for decades.

Take Canberra out of Australia and no-one will even notice.
@shangyienPotsdamer Platz was empty in 2013 too
@PeterShieldsukcatstripeyThe city looks great! That museum is what more museums should.look like: grand, structured, vibez. Also, we need more less-capitalist cities
@DanielleA2023It seems they forgot to mention the bombs.
@animalariscoproducoes6453Who wrote this piece? It's very strange to be told Berlin was "booming" in 1920 but then there was a something that happened and then Berlin was split in two. It's even stranger when you consider that the atmosphere of Berlin in the 1990s was a repeat of what happened in the 1920s, and no one is mentioning it.
@ironhillsby chance, does anyone know the track / sound starting 11.32min? awesome beat! :_))
@tom_oliverBlnYou have Frankfurt for finance. Berlin is too far east, Frankfurt is closer to CH & rest of the European by train as well as closer to other major German cities. Berlin is simply irrelevant because of its location.
@djtdjt8921So good documentary, I love it, so knowledgeable
@khw7462What did you expect from society where everyone is on drugs? Capitalism? Fckn zombieland
@jacksoneffenberg246Poor modern day hippies whose time has passed.
@daveyvaneStill, Berlin is not the vibrant city it was in the 90's anymore. Times are over for real creativity in Berlin.
Now, the rich lives in areas which were hype in the 90's. Boredom moved in. 😮😢
City of Nerds
@thenathanimal2909Came for the history, stayed for the techno
@MariaG-k6v17:16 “Something of the sold is being lost these days…” So true for what’s happening all over the world.
@jefjohn2008Berlin used to be sexy.. they don’t have that going for them anymore so now it’s just broke.
@deVryzTechno-Viking was born in an abandoned East Berlin factory, in 1990. 7:05
@JK-br1muThe more videos I watch about Germany the more I realize why it is getting annihilated! It is self-inflicted destruction.
@erzsebetfeher2336So many attempts, by so many, at trying to put a "positive spin" on things, on the future and its potential payoffs base on nothing of substance. There is nothing enduring or hopeful about this kind of thinking or mentality. It is all very superficial and shallow. No society can thrive on such. No people can thrive or endure with such dark possibilities or hopes. ...very sad
Berlin is an exceptionally stark example, but there are also many other places and peoples that face the same lack of hope or optimism.
All that American capitalism touches gets turned into SHIT.
Fuck the United Snakes of America and their toxic mentality that's erasing all beauty from the world and turning it into a nightmare.
Berlin fell into the same problem as Rome in the last decade: extreme gentrification of prices WITHOUT a properly gentrified job market.
Rome is almost as expensive as Milan due to tourism, but it isn't a financial hub so it doesn't even offer a 10th of Milan's opportunities and salaries are extremely low.
Berlin used to be extremely cheap up to the 2000s (I lived there in 2008-09), but now it's as expensive as any other capital city without having become a strong financial hub.
Helsinki is not a rich city and I like it that way. We have low rents and high quality of life. I hope investors and rich people will allways stay away from Helsinki.
I love this cheap beautiful city with lots of space and empty rental apartments and empty factorys where we have conserts and art and all kind of culture.
We do drugs and go to clubs. Our clubs have short lines and everyone is wellcome no matter what skin colour. Just like Berlin back in the days when I was young and Berlin was fun and inclusive before turism ruined it.
In Helsinki we don't have much tourism. Turist all go to Lapland. Now Lapland has high rents and pissed off locals
F money and everyone who cares about money. I'm poor and happy
AWESOME‼️ The only capital city I could actually live in❕
(And boy was that a shock when I finally visited the Mighty Bundesrepublik's capital!)
this place is just german seattle
@will-o5d5k? so instead of living off ther parents thay wen to berlin
@will-o5d5kYou either have concentrated poverty in a city and wealth is dispersed regionally away from the city, or you have wealth concentrated in a city and the surrounding regions are poor. Take your pick.
@juztnlast953other peoples money always runs dry n these nerds all just stink. its not cool to be poor n the notion that it is anyway just childish... actual adults find so called artists unbearable
@Jdigger4130If business now shapes Berlin it will convert the city into a pile of faceless skyscrapers
And no
It's not seχy.
This just goes to show you can't plan an economy. All you can do is recognize human nature and allow people the freedom to make choices.
Economies are built on human dreams, desires and needs. They are built on the freedom to speak, to own, and to keep. They are not built on ideologies.
0:36 "and its GDP essentially wouldn't change."
Correction: GDP per capita
Get rid of the communist ideology, bring back financial stability and individualism so people can start families and prosper.
@sachatraister4779Frankfurt a.M. is the capitol of Germany.
@escapadesrpgRELEASE THE SOUNDTRACK!
@oz1213-u4xVery odd to use an American English word to describe a European phenomenon. I sense bias.
@Thurokiir119.30 "This year the citys conservative government is slashing the cultural budget to save money."
And we are back to how it all started 100 years ago.
